Started with an ARK Logic 2d board with a Diamond Voodoo 2 Monster 3D II strapped onto it. Used it to play half Life and TFC combined with a beastly 4x8mb of EDO ram and a 850MB Drive :p

Next card was a Creative MX, cant remember exact model.

That got upgraded to a 9800 Pro.

Next up was an x1800xt.

Following shortly after was an X800XTPE

And then onto my current card, an 8800GT.

My hardware lasts me a while ;)

The Radeon 9700 was mad, one of the best cards ever.

8800 GTX and GTX 280 are close second though for me, both huge upgrades.

S3 Savage 2000 (Bought for spare machine to play with, specs showed promise and I hoped this would be s3's breakthrough into discrete graphics solutions to rival ATI and NV i remember reading reviews full of hope but the hardware was severly let down by drivers. When s3 finally got t&l working on this card is was plagued with issues which ultimately led to their demise and sale to VIA a few years later)

Ati 9700 pro (Was plagued with problems with a kt333 chipset, when I finally worked this out and bought a new EPOX board this thing was simply breathtaking.)

I have never had any problems with ATI or Nvidia, both have been great.

Had a fair few over the years starting out on a crappy trident 1mb ;) :-
