No doubt I have missed some out

only just got into pc building really, first 1 was probably vesa of some kind with a 486sx and 4mb of ram.

2nd was a pentium 200 have no idea what was in that, but played things like duke 3d, resident evil 2 and 3, (though not the first 1 that required 3dfx!) and the spate of fmv games around at the time lol.

next had some tnt riva 32mb thing in it, wasnt playing much pc games at that time but ran gabriel knight 3 maxed out! the final pc i bought off the shelf had a radeon 9200 and pentium 4. this ran final fantasy xi online ok and that was pretty much the only thing i played on it. never really knew what i was buying up till that point but it seems now at least i always walked away with a dedicated card, could have been worse. then someone at work started buliding a pc so i thought i'd try as well and ended up with a gtx 280 then when that died i got a 5870, now i have 2 of them.

To make it more interesting and see what kind of spending patterns people have, I think we should quote the approximate price we paid for our cards,

Assuming we are only talking 3D cards here:

£90 3dfx-Guillemot Voodoo Graphics (aka Voodoo '1')
£80? 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 AGP
£112 Nvidia-Hercules Geforce 2 MX (faster 5.5ns VRAM)
£swap 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (swapped for the above v3 so that I could run multiple graphics cards and retain Glide support... was quite amusing running 3dfx and Nvidia cards alongside each other, meanwhile the forums were full of paranoia about all the problems you would get if you didn't uninstall graphics drivers from other vendors)
£120 Nvidia-Asus Geforce 4 Ti4200 64MB
£170 ATI-Hercules Radeon 9800SE AIW (softmod to 9800pro)
£170 Nvidia-XFX Geforce 6800 AGP
£210 Nvidia-Leadtek Geforce 6800GT PCI-E
£158 Nvidia-OcUK Geforce 7900GTO
£190 Nvidia-BFG Geforce 8800GTS 320MB
£240 Nvidia-Leadtek Geforce GTX 280
£145 Nvidia-MSI Geforce GTX 470

So from my perspective you can I see I started off as a poor student scraping around the £100 mark, then ramped it up fairly quickly to around the £180 average mark. The good news is that if you take inflation into account I haven't really changed my spending on GPUs in the past 8 years.

Common trend is that I'm a bit of a sucker for what I perceive as a 'good deal', with the GTX470, GTX280 and 7900GTO being purchased after some fairly hefty pricecuts.

i cant really remember how much i wait for all mine over the years.

althou on average, most of them have been around the £100-150 mark
with the exceptions being the voodoo 3 i got for free, swapped my ati xpert@play and voodoo 2 for it
and the latest, GTX480, which i bought close to release at £320.

In my main machine...

ATi Rage Pro
ATi 9800
ATi x800
Nvidia 6600gt
Nvidia 7800gt
Nvidia 8800gts
ATi 4850

I think... may have missed some out. Other machines have had low-mid end cards or I've reused my cards. Don't game as heavily now and tend to wait for prices to drop and pick up previous gen second hand.

Hate to think how much that adds up to.....

On my Intel machines
GeForce 8600
GeForce GTS 250

On my AMD machine
3870s in CrossFire

Prior to that I had my PC built by a family member and had no clue which GPUs :/

radeon 7200
radeon 9200
radeon 9800xt when I realised how crap the 9200 was
radeon x800xt
radeon x1800xt
geforce 8800 gts 320mb
radeon 4870 1gb
radeon 5870
then another radeon 5870 in crossfire
and finally the 6950 (overclocked to 6970)

As you can tell I like my radeons :D

Funnily enough, with all the people on these boards who moan about driver problems with ati cards, I've never had one lol. I often assume its blown out of proportion.

Same here, I've had around six or more radeons and they've been on the whole very good cards. My only gripe is that I find the frames dip a bit more when AA is applied, where as with the current card I'm using the performance is substantially better. Maybe it also has something to do with me running a third gen CPU as well.

But you never had a 3870 :(

Wasn't the 3800 series the first from ATI to have PCIe 2.0?
