Have you ever responded to a post and not completely missed the point?
Exactly what I was going to say. Plus the Mondeo represented better value for money, was more spacious, better equipped and better looking.
*Snigger*....mmkay then.
Your opinion would be at odds of pretty much every motoring journalist who's driven the cars. The Passat is a better car in a lot of ways - its better built, has a better interior and is more comfortable. But in handling terms, the Mondeo is the better car. Im not saying that because I own one - I own one because that's the fact.

Handling is pretty neglible anyway because of this :

Uprate the arb's, then springs and dampers or even coilovers and a professional setup and for under 1k my passat is better handling than most cars on the road.
Spend 1k on a mondeo interior and you have just about bought leather seats, still have badly built bits and bobs.

I'm really not trying to have a go at you, but why would you spend £1,000 uprating the suspension on a diesel saloon that you bought for fuel economy? Not many coilover setups (particularly those developed for the 'Lower the better' VW Scene) are designed for comfort, and at the end of the day you'll be fighting a losing battle. A heavy, FWD saloon car is not the best base for a great handling car, it can be done (look at 95% of modern touring cars) but that is besides the point. Put quite simply, you're going to compromise the ride quality ALL of the time for a negligible gain you might get the odd time you find yourself on a suitable road. All in the car which I thought one of the selling points would have been it's comfort? How about you save the £1,000 you've got set aside for the suspension and the ££££ it's going to cost to unlock 170BHP reliably from an old Rover Diesel lump and spend the money on running a car that doesn't handle like a Passat in the first place ?
Don't get me wrong, I've always owned modified cars, I think that I always will, but I just don't understand why you'd spend £1,000 on modifying a run of the mill Saloon car in any area other than audio. Sure, they can be improved upon, but what's the bloody point?
Where do you get tuning a rover from ? thats someone else not me.
. Spectacular brain failure on my part.I need another "going out car"..
So my plans will be to buy an M5 later than 2000 MY

Gotta love the fanboy deluded Passat owner, he needs to get real!
The Passat isn't a great car to drive, its one of the most dull cars i've ever driven!
However it does other things quite well.
The Mondeo is a much better drive, that goes without question.
