Your plans for 2010?

 Have you ever responded to a post and not completely missed the point?

Exactly what I was going to say. Plus the Mondeo represented better value for money, was more spacious, better equipped and better looking.

See now your blatently lying out of your teeth, as i barely fit in a mongdeo, with the seat right back and down, yet i have excess room in the passat.

Also, i have a 3.5 cuft ported subwoofer box in the boot and still have more room around it than i had in my mk3 golf in total with no sub box.

*Snigger*....mmkay then.

Your opinion would be at odds of pretty much every motoring journalist who's driven the cars. The Passat is a better car in a lot of ways - its better built, has a better interior and is more comfortable. But in handling terms, the Mondeo is the better car. Im not saying that because I own one - I own one because that's the fact.

Handling is pretty neglible anyway because of this :

Uprate the arb's, then springs and dampers or even coilovers and a professional setup and for under 1k my passat is better handling than most cars on the road.

Spend 1k on a mondeo interior and you have just about bought leather seats, still have badly built bits and bobs.

:)

for the golf once the engine is done;

Suspension. Maybe KW V1s or something? New thicker ARB front and back, and new poly bushes in everything
Wheels. Not sure yet but something.
Exhaust. Again not sure what yet, something nice for sure.
Interior. Depends what comes up, probably just a better condition one (ie no bolster wear!) And a full strip and refit with lots of soundproofing and get rid of any rattles.
Brakes. Either upgraded to g60 brakes or just kit out the current setup with new pads/disks/MC
Exterior. Respray probably.
Maybe a new gearbox, or maybe just a new 5th gear (need a cruising gear!)
Tyres. R888s or something!
New headlights, bulbs and wiring loom.

And that's probably it! Then maybe a little remap, money for a new clutch allowing of course!

I'm really not trying to have a go at you, but why would you spend £1,000 uprating the suspension on a diesel saloon that you bought for fuel economy? Not many coilover setups (particularly those developed for the 'Lower the better' VW Scene) are designed for comfort, and at the end of the day you'll be fighting a losing battle. A heavy, FWD saloon car is not the best base for a great handling car, it can be done (look at 95% of modern touring cars) but that is besides the point. Put quite simply, you're going to compromise the ride quality ALL of the time for a negligible gain you might get the odd time you find yourself on a suitable road. All in the car which I thought one of the selling points would have been it's comfort? How about you save the £1,000 you've got set aside for the suspension and the ££££ it's going to cost to unlock 170BHP reliably from an old Rover Diesel lump and spend the money on running a car that doesn't handle like a Passat in the first place ?

Don't get me wrong, I've always owned modified cars, I think that I always will, but I just don't understand why you'd spend £1,000 on modifying a run of the mill Saloon car in any area other than audio. Sure, they can be improved upon, but what's the bloody point?

Can we just clarify - you think a Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI and some suspension mods is better handling than most cars on the road?

Seriously?

Where do you get tuning a rover from ? thats someone else not me.

Im just saying that, if i desired, i could make the passat handle better than a mondeo for under a grand, whereas it would cost him a lot more than that to sort out the lesser quality of the ford.

I am actually very happy with the ride quality and handling of the passat, and i think it could easily compete with a mondeo tdci.

Its just this forum seems to think anything passat is crud, and anything ford mondeo is 2nd only to a bmw, go elsewhere and you dont find these opinions.

There's nothing wrong with the passat, they were on my list just after the Mondeo - I bought the Mondeo because at the time I found a better one than the Passats that were around and I do prefer them on balance.

You must be 8 foot tall to struggle to fit in a Mondeo, I've had 4 friends and luggage for a week in comfort without even removing the parcel shelf, my sister's 6'5" fiancee can sit in the back seat behind me with my seat almost all the way back and I need to actually get into the boot to hook the bungee cord in the anchor points in the back.

The Mondeo was the more practical choice because it's bigger and it's also a hatchback so the load space is more flexible and I can get a dog in the back without paying an extra premium for an estate.

Both cars have pros and cons, my point is that the Mondeo is a better handling car but still isnt a "fun" car - I was merely pointing that out to show how ridiculous the claims of your fun Passat were. At no point did I claim my car was fun, in fact I was trying to emphasise the opposite.

As Fox put so well, there's nothing intolerable about the interior or quality of the Mondeo so it doesnt need a grand spending on it, just that the Passat is a bit more solid. If I wanted leather seats and more gagets, I could have bought a Ghia X but I preferred the better looking and handling of the ZS, wouldnt have cost me any more.

I think it's quite obvious to any non troller that my views are balanced between the 2 cars but you seem to be creating pointless arguments that only serve to highlight the deficiencies in the car you confusingly describe as fun (and potentially better handling than most other cars). Fanboyism to the extreme - ironic considering the last sentence of your post, don't you agree?

I'm really not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that. I'd like to say that I go you mixed up with someone else, but I mentioned the Passat 10 words later :p. Spectacular brain failure on my part.

Gotta love the fanboy deluded Passat owner, he needs to get real!

The Passat isn't a great car to drive, its one of the most dull cars i've ever driven!

However it does other things quite well.

The Mondeo is a much better drive, that goes without question.

Are you sure thats a good idea, doesnt seem like a sound plan given the posts you've made over the last few months about finances

I'm sure I posted about that somewhere but it's been paid off.
And no it wasn't through bankruptcy.

And thats from a Passat owner! - hopefully that will put the daft argument to bed as it negates any claims of fanboyism!
