Your plans for 2010?

170-180bhp will still make it more lively than most diesel hacks, while keeping above 40mpg and being fun when roads and conditions allow. Plus the reliability.

Surely not really facepalm tbh? :/

To be honest, I can see where the face palm is coming from.

If having 'fun' on the road is that important to you, why did you purchase a diesel Rover? I'm not a Rover hater (In fact I do have the occasional naughty thoughts about a 220 Coupe or 420 Turbo), but they aren't exactly reknown for their B - Road pounding capabilities.

How much exactly is all of this work going to cost you? Even if you do the labour yourself, a new Turbocharger and supporting mods can't exactly be done on a shoestring budget, regardless of the car. And exactly what sort of gain is this going to yield for the money. Wiki claims that the L series made 111BHP in it's most powerful form, so 60BHP for what I assume to be easily a grands worth of parts. Not really specular.

Why can't that grand be put towards the running costs (Fuel) of a car that is quicker and more exciting in the first place?

His car is a 98, I'm sure he had reasons for not wanting to buy a 1993 example on its last legs for twice what he paid for his.

Still not really relevant? I was mearly pointing out that a M3 could be picked up for £2,500. Model year doesn't really matter as a E36 M3 for that sort of money is going to be rougher than a badgers backside regardless.

I don't actually know why we are disagreeable on this? I'm sure we both agree that at the heart of this, both making a 318iS look like a M3 (more so than it left the factory) and modifying a diesel Rover are pretty decent ways of wasting money? :p

It'll blow a hose or a belt and you'll be ****ed. Don't bother and buy an Mx-5 to drive like a nob

You make sure these things are upto the job first, it's just had new hoses and belts.

There are a few people with 170-180bhp L series lumps, and so far little problems. :)

The VNT will be the expensive bit, this is why I'm unsure if it's a good plan. Everything else will be less than £300 all in, the VNT doesn't add that much, just allows boost earlier, and stops it trailing off at high ( :p ) RPM.

Nothing mechanical but something i've wanted for a while on the S:

Wipacs :)

I have seen some very quick diesels to be fair.

A remapped and IC'd/hybrid turbo'd (Fab VRS) really troubled my old 172 (his about 190bhp). Someone else I know has a diesel Ibiza that's running mid 12's on a quarter mile with an LSD, impressive stuff.

Ok now for my serious answer.

I'm currently looking for a nicely specified 2.0 mk1.5 Focus. That'll be sitting on my drive come january. I'll also be hitting 3 years no claims in october 2010 which will unlock the ability to insure something mildly quick. At the moment the Leon Cupra R stands out but I'll be looking at my options closer to the time as I'm not much of a dreamer.

Not too many plans car wise for 2010, changed this year so will probably be concentrating funds in other areas...

Might try and get some more on the landrover done at some point though.

Slighty bumpy to the thread.

Definitely replacing the Leon, it's practically sold (hopefully that doesnt come back to bite me in the rear...), my main target (a blue 530i) has also been sold, so unsure as to what next. Deffo something larger, saloon, bigger engined than the leon Im still thinking. However, recent events have made me think about going down the 2 car route.

I can afford it if I plonk for something semi decent/reliable (say an accord/mond..) for 3-5k, and the rest (roughly same again) for an Mr2/Mx5/CRX, etc. Will see how things pan out.

b*****ks. Sorry. If you've bought it to be cheap to run, then bloody well keep it cheap to run. Save up, buy something nice. Does this not sound sensible to you?

ANYWAY.. back to the thread.

Hmm.. I'd imagine in the next year or so the MX5 will have the bodywork tidied up a bit, which will cost a fair bit. Also maybe an uprated clutch and LSD from a 1.8 to handle the newly acquired power a bit more. Then maybe, depending on how much it'll cost, some 'proper' engine management (professionally tuned so the engine doesn't explode). Perhaps also some better seats. It needs a cambelt (and waterpump) change at some point too.

Oh and I'll have it rolling-roaded :D

Other than that, I'm just going to continue to enjoying driving it. I think now that I've got potentially 150-160 odd bhp (and nearly as much torque), which is a tidy increase, spending another grand on bits to extract maybe 10 more bhp and a few more MPG isn't going to be worth it, the laws of diminishing returns will quickly set in. But we'll see.

It might be 2010 by the time I get around to fitting the uprated brakes I have sitting in my garage, too :D

I might change my daily driver, but that depends on how my job is going. The Honda isn't giving me any grief at all really so it'll stay for now :)

I bought my passat because I get over 500 miles to £48 with a mixed driving style, and its still fun. Ive embarresed a lot of cars in races (when its safe, ie a30, a38 at night no one on road etc).

My mate matt who fox will probably know from southwest bmw forums as m_att bought his hellrot red m3 for under 3k and has had no problems with it.

Wikkid, a fun Passat that you race

Jesus

I can't see my e36 328i going this year, it was a stop gap that's not needed filling up to yet.

I'm torn between running it into the ground, or,on the other hand, spruce it up in the spring - it has some bubbles starting to appear and has the general paintwork condition of an average nearly 14 year old car! and get it looking like it should again....

That said, I miss my old e38 and I'm reluctant to throw too much money at the e36.

If I find myself working in Europe in the new year, then an e38 740 / 750i becomes a viable option again (due to it sitting unused for around 2 weeks at a time! :D)

(when its safe, ie a30, a38 at night no one on road etc).
I can assure you that your quite wrong,Late night supposedly "quiet" roads are lethal for a number of reasons. I see it all the time, late night accidents, nobody else involved...... Think about it.

Good lord, do you ever stop failing?
