Your Political Compass

I wouldn't say we are identifying as anything really, we all seem to get pigeon holed into a set group as we disagree with all the politics the Left seem to push, So if we think the opposite on anything at all we must be far right Nazis?
Obviously I don't truly believe that but I wouldn't say it's totally wrong.

In a surprise to hopefully no-one, I'm a liberal centrist -

I have some strong left wing beliefs and some strong right wing beliefs all of which means that, depending on the subject being discussed, I may appear to be on either side. However I've always been (as far as I can tell anyway) what would probably be considered a "classical" liberal.

This survey is a bit naff.
It looks very American.

It definitely causes us over in the UK to fall left.
Like questions on abortion and astrology. No one here (hopefully) will be on the other side with these

Oh the ironing! :p

Well...There are people who are very vocal about telling others they are left leaning aren't they, I didn't put them into that group.
I don't see myself on either side tbh, both sides have the good and bad points, It's just it becomes tiresome on here with what I must assume is fake virtue just for online arguments sake?
I wonder how you/we all really go about your/our day to day lives? Do we all go on the same with people in a face to face conversation?

Its a chore isn't it?

:D

Tbh, I think people are focussed on the wrong axis, I don't actually think there's a huge difference between the vast majority of us on the X-Y axis and it doesn't surprise me at all that a lot of people come out with left of centre results - polls in the UK of opinions on policies do tend to show the public gravitate to more socialist ideals (healthcare, welfare etc etc) it just seems people think they don't like "left" policies. Compare that to the US where you have a contingent that think the NHS is communism! :D

I think where the more prominant and discernable differences between us is on the Z axis, that shows far more profound distinctions. Look at Rob yesterday, he self identifies as 'Right Wing Authoritarianism" his test comes out slightly left, like a lot of us, but I can guarantee it's higher up on the Authoritarian scale. Hence his views on subservience to authority, lack of individual freedom and no right to protest against authority. Which I, and I would guess a lot of people irrespective if they identify as left or right, would find pretty abhorrent.

I don't think anyone on here is very vocal that they are lefties. Alongside calling people 'woke', it is mostly used by 'you lot' as a dog whistle/crude nonsensical insult.

I think in America it means a lot more as the Republicans are basically stuck in the stones ages with the most poorly educated President the world has ever seen, and have people in the most senior positions sitting upon the dumbest states (Mitch McConnel etc). To be 'right' in America is closer to what I think you would comically paint in your head.

In the UK we are all very left leaning, as we have had to be progressive and collaborate with world partners to achieve what we have.

UK attitudes are quite strange in that when surveyed we support policies that are typically left/progressive/'woke' but then vote for parties that don't have those policies in their manifestos.

probably down to the "2 party" mentality that exists, which kills off a lot of votes for parties like the green

Frustrates me. Too many people I know saying that unless you vote for Labour or the conservatives it's a wasted vote.

Apparently I am a Liberal lefty.

That's not a huge surprise to me, as I believe government should bear responsibility for a range of public health and environmental protection issues.

As people above have said, I think the centre on this is based on a US perspective.

It's very American. So the things like Abortion and religion which isn't even a issue in the UK let alone 'left v right thing' will push people to the left on that graph.

A lot of this is down to propaganda, right-wing biased media, ignorance, selfishness. A lot of people genuinely want many progressive left-wing ideas such as a strong welfare for the unfortunate, excellent education accessible to all, universal health care. But then they read the Daily Mail headlines etc. and get brainwashed in to thinking benefits frauds are costing them huge amounts of taxes, that labour would destroy the economy, that illegal immigrants are raping and pillaging across the country and the left want to invite in hordes of barbarians.

Also,as with the other thread on GD recently. Labour would have won the 2019 election if it was only for working age people. Brexit would never have happened if only working age people could have voted.

Yes pro NHS, pro abortion, not religious will skew us all left regardless of other beliefs.

Also I doubt many of us are hyper pro, unregulated free markets too....

Tbh as others say, we will all mostly share those common traits.
