Your thoughts please... 680 SLI and Surround or wait for GK110

I enjoyed it more tonight. I still need to adjust. I'm used to leaning left slightly as that was where monitor was before. That then throws the whole balance out!

Overall, the performance is where I'd expect although the MSAA 2x was a little bit of a shock. I need to find out what the utilisation is like in Surround though as I'm wondering whether PCI-E 3.0 could benefit that a little.

My BF3 playing performance has hit the floor. I don't know if it's because I'm playing rubbish or whether the set-up ain't helping. Time will tell!

What 3D games would you recommend? :)

L4D2 is superb in 3D. The Witcher 2 is also very good. Somebody (maybe Tommy?!) did a pretty good round up of games in 3D.

BF3(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), very disappointing, thought it would be much, much better, especially compared with the effects on other titles, quite a performance hit too!

edit***BF3 looks much better using Tridef than the in game setting that I used above and Crysis shimmering was caused by a setting in Tridef that you can switch off, was a bit of a 3D noob back then.***

L4D2, incredible 3D effect, the best use of 3D of all the games I tried, imo the overall depth, looking into the distance is incredible.

Skyrim, stunning 2nd best looking title for me absolutely fantastic.

Deuss Ex(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), it's ok, but nothing special.

edit***bit better using Tridef as well***

BAC, fantastic, not much of a performance hit and Bats looks incredible when you pan the camera around him it has to be seen to take it in.

Dead Space 2, fantastic.

Bulletstorm, very immersive.

ME3, good looking and lots of depth.

F3 NV, great looking.

Dirt 3, (not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game) disappointing as I heard it was very impressive, maybe expected too much.

Portal 2, looks great but I was getting a huge performance hit.

edit***Switched off CrossFire, fps literally went through the roof***

Crysis 2, fantastic, not much of a hit.

Crysis, sore on the senses, it looks great, but I was getting a shimmering effect, maybe have to play about with the settings and there is a considerable performance hit too.

edit***fixed the shimmering by disabling power 3D in Tridef and fps increased too, now I know what I'm doing with Tridef, I was a Tridef noob back then***

I can add a few more to the list since then:

Alan Wake/American Nightmare is absolutely stunning in all the fog, what's surprising though for me is AW needs CrossFire disabled to get good performance, where as AM has mental CrossFire performance in 3D despite both using the same CrossFire/Tridef profiles.

NFS the run better than Dirt 3's built in 3D(but again like BF3, Dirt 3 looks better using Tridef).

BAA, much the same as BAA.

MP3 is not too shabby but the colours look a bit washed out for me, you should get a better result on Nvidia I imagine as it's only running on the Beta Tridef.

The Darkness 2 gets the thumbs up as well.

Diablo 3 looks fantastic, but it's not my cup of tea.

Trine is magical.

DAII, not too shabby either.

Generally, Unreal Engine games look the part in 3D.

Bulletstorm(very surprisingly) really blew me away in 3D tbh, played it for a level or two in 2D, put it down and walked away but it really comes into it's own in 3D, felt like a kid again, ducking out the road of stuff and actually trying to peek round corners(obviously you can't, but your brain tells you otherwise:D), really can't rate it enough in 3D.

If you are into Skyrim, well it's in a different league folks, especially highly moded with various texture packs, walking about in a snow storm is something else.

Really should be a 3D gaming thread in the forum somewhere.

Great post dude, thanks :)

After my earlier whinge... I jumped back in BF3 3-screen 3D... managed to get it to playable (albeit not smooth) frame rates with most at ultra except shadows on medium, motion blur off, HBAO off and 2x MSAA

Went on to some of the earlier maps & fell in love... ended up just running through the trees for a while... couldn't care less about the enemy lol... I looked fantastic.

My aim got used to it a bit more - looks like it's just something I have to acclimatise to.

Switching back to playing some more competitive games... 3D off, the peripheral vision is extremely useful! I found myself getting even better :D

Definitely... need more GPU grunt though - wish I'd picked up the £750 offer the other day... ah well, hopefully another one will come up soon :D

Looking at the performance of BF3 on ultra... *just* another 680 won't cut it for me... I need to almost double frame rates to be happy with performance... so another 690 it is.

Todays offer of £820 is a bit higher than the others I've seen... I'm not in a huge rush - so will wait for another ~£750 offer and snap it up then :)

Need a new PSU too - that's gonna be a ball-ache

From what I've read - yes - you can mix 690+680... but I haven't heard from anyone who's actually done it.

3 cards for 3 screens seems about right - but judging from current performance - I want as close to double the frame rate as I can get :)

Haven't actually installed fraps yet... doh!

On the settings mentioned above... I think I'm getting a relatively smooth 60+ FPS... which of course in 3D is 30+ FPS

I'll get fraps on later and do a benchmark or two.

Right I'm keeping it. I'm converted - I love it :). The key is to not use the two screens as main screens. I almost felt like I had to, to get my money's worth (they're pricey screens!) and that was definitely exacerbating the stretching.
