YouTube Premium

@Scarfacé

No that wasn't your point because I'm not agreeing to what you're saying.

And other countries have plenty of other disparities. You can't just cherry pick all the comparatively expensive stuff we pay for.

20 quid for a month of youtube under a family plan is fair. What other form of entertainment and education are you going to get directly comparable to youtube at that price?

Either you watch it for free with ads or you pay. No point whinging both sides.

The pricing in the ‘west’ is as much down to how much more money they can raise from advertising, particularly English speaking regions than anything else. Pricing in other markets is about extracting as much of what little money those people have from them while building a massive moat to keep competition out of the market.

If they take away the adds, the revenue from premium needs to exceed what they loose in the ads otherwise they might as well not bother going premium.

If you go somewhere like Turkey and watch the Turkish adds you soon realise the amount of money exchanging hands in exchange for your time is significantly lower. All you’ll get is ads for rubbish pay to win mobile games that look like I designed them in primary school. Back in Blighty, I’d get full TV quality adverts from big brands.
Yeah I absolutely get that it just seems so disproportionate, especially when you consider the economies of some of these “poor” countries and also the fact that most of them are able and do watch the same English speaking content.

I find it hard to believe that YT would make anywhere near the same amount in ad revenue from a viewer compared to the cost of a premium subscription but maybe I’m wrong.

They don’t but that’s not what I said either. The premium user is generating more revenue and this is reflected in creator payouts.

Creators don’t get paid as much for a viewer from Argentina compared to a viewer from the US or U.K. that’s why content is predominantly focussed on English speaking countries, they pay the best rates.

The premium subscription has to significantly exceed what they can earn from the adds from those users otherwise it doesn’t add any value and grow the business overall.

I know you didn’t say that. I agree with everything you’ve said, other than “the premium subscription has to significantly exceed what they can earn from ads”. YouTube’s business model is based on ad revenue and I imagine that’s where the significant proportion comes from and it already has profit margin baked into it. Surely the premium subscription has to cover the amount they are losing from ad revenue and nothing more. I agree it can’t be less, but why should it be significantly more?

Had the email. Kinda sad tbh, I watch youtube a lot but I don't think I can justify the cost. If it was under a tenner I'd probably sign back up.
Just need to put on a VPN and try a few other countries, I lost India but and paying £9.30 for a family pass in Poland, are are others that are cheaper but just have to keep trying

I received "the email" on 23rd October telling me I had to have a local payment method by 21 November for my Youtube account in Argentina. I've not done anything about this and payment was taken for another month on the 8th November. So I'm expecting the auto renewal to fail on the 8th December - has anyone just waited beyond the deadline and seen the auto-renewal actually fail?

No answer to my question which may have got lost in the noise - so has everyone changed their payment method without actually waiting to find out if they actually need to?

Daft question, but if I've got an India sub, how do I change country to Poland? I'm connected via VPN but can only see options to change the billing card, not billing address? Or do I need to let it lapse then subscribe again?

Is there a work around? I'm certainly not paying full price, to watch YouTube tripe.
If you already subscribe to a VPN service, connect your device to one of the non-monetised countries (Google it) and you shouldn't get any ads. Not a solution if you use offline downloads or background play.

I had to do mine a month or 2 ago because my credit card I had set it up with expired and needed to be reset up but they have made changes so UK cards don't work in India
