YouTube Premium

Watched YT on the TV for the first time since my Premium ended. And I find myself wondering how/why people bother if they haven't got Premium. I'm 8 minutes into my first video. I had adverts before the video (fair enough) and three(!) ad breaks during the video so far  I'm one ad break away from giving up, grabbing my tablet and using ReVanced YouTube instead...

It's been years since I've used normal YT, but I don't remember it being this bad...

EDIT: Jesus F Christ - a fourth 45 second ad break inside the 10 minute mark. I'm done.

Same happened to me when my premium expired. I thought I'd try it out and within 10 mins of watching a video, I was done aswell, 6 ads with in 10 mins!

Something I mentioned before they use ad patterns to try and frustrate people into subscribing, what you are seeing ad wise may not be the normal experience or the same experience someone else gets. Sometimes it is a tailored pattern of ads other times they seem to run periodic campaigns.

You are probably getting hit with a pattern of ads designed to "remind" you what it is "like" without premium to coerce you into paying again.

Same with podcasts, I get ads depending on which country I'm located in. Sometimes I get zero ads or get random ads in between. Dynamic ads is a PITA.

Went to Morocco back in 2023, YT Premium isn't supported there... Dame, did it let me know with the amount of ads! I couldn't take it anymore and had to VPN into a support location.

Mine finally ended, and same experience as others have said adpocalypse. I've solved it by using Smart tube on my android box, Firefox + ublock on pc and revanced on mobile to patch both YT and YTMusic. No ads anymore!

Fortunate enough to be able to use a work email to get me youtube premium, as a student :D

I use youtube on the livingroom tv for the kids and I so I don't have any way to side load anything to the tv to help with blocking ads etc. Sucks but at least it's only £8 a month

Yeah most of my YouTube consumption is through an LG TV, AppleTV 4K or my iOS devices. So I kinda have to have premium but I also think it's worth <£5 a month.

They’re taking their time releasing this ‘lite’ sub without the music. I think it’ll be more like £7/8 than £5 unfortunately.

To be fair, at £7 in the UK I'd probably grit my teeth and accept it. I think I've used YouTube Music a handful of times over the last 4 years.

I’ve never even contemplated premium as I don’t think the ads are that bad, maybe 2 shippable ones at the start and one 10 mins in? I’m not even really conscious of them if I’m honest and I hit the skip button automatically without realising it Perhaps it is targeted and they have given up on me lol. Or maybe I’m just so accustomed to it I dont notice a bit like those of us who grew up on Goldeneye on the N64 didn’t notice the 14fps jankiness at the time!

Finally caved in and purchased a premium account (£16 for the year) from a place that sounds like (gee two a) (not sure if I can link the place) it's been bliss with no ads and background music in the car again!

The only downsides I can think of are if the account has any problems or if the seller is a scammer but so far so good and it's been a week or more ;)

I've shared the account details with the family just in case they want to use it but nobody seems interested since our last family subscription was cancelled so I believe I have the account all to myself which will be good for the algorithms :D

How does this work, do you just use it as normal or do you add it to your family and then piggyback benefits off it?

I believe behind the scenes, they're creating a family account in a low cost country (e.g. India), fill that family with separate Google accounts, and then sell each of those Google accounts to individuals - keeping control themselves of the family master.

So you can't modify the family or add other people to it.

Yeah, you're allocated a new account, you can't, unfortunately, utilise your own account. Maybe worth it for the main family TV.

Yeah that's the value I see of it. After all, as I've been at pains to point out, I'm totally capable of using sideloaded apps, browser extensions, it's family and kids that can't do that. So, if my only objective is no ads and I don't care that much about algorithms, recommendations and the like, it's not a bad option. At least it's far simpler than some of the workarounds... the big question is whether you can trust the seller not to screw you a month or two down the line.

The seller has set up a family account in a cheaper region and then sells the individual accounts to poor or tight folk like myself :D. I'm a little relieved that my main account is no longer on a different fake payment plan, to be honest, but there is always a risk when trusting random people online :( if it works out for a while though the £16 will be a decent saving compared to the UK subscription.

The same website does 1, 3, 6 and 12 monthly subscriptions for a reasonable price too if you are worried about the risks ;) a little higher priced but still a saving.
