YouTube Premium

Google are taking the ****. I'll admit I am an adblocker, and I still have ways around their current regime.

But charging £17 per month, even whilst stamping down on adblockers? Ridiculous. What they should be doing is finding cheaper solutions e.g. £5 or £8 per month. Then I might be willing to pay.
They will get round that as well. They want you to pay, but they don't want to pay as they are a big corporation and can agree on how much tax they want to pay.
I am happy that someone can make money from yt, but unless you are big, the payments are worth absolute **** for new starters.

Pretty sure all this fiddling they are doing to try and defeat ad blocking is causing some site problems when not blocking ads - there still little glitchy issues with loading into the site and videos where some stuff is weirdly delayed, etc.
Current rumour mill is that they have added a line of code to add an artifical delay to the youtube webpage on non chrome based browsers.

Something definitely going on but not sure whether it is that or they've screwed something up with these attempts to beat ad blockers.

Yeap, definitely true for me for the past 24hrs. I added the extra "filter" being recommended into uBlock Origin which removed this 5sec delay for me, sneaky sneaky Google - When they removed "don't be evil" from their motto I knew that was the time they should have been raided by every "National Police/Security Agency" available :D

Not had it show up yet for me on FF with UBO

Happening for me on FF and other browsers, but not Chrome or Edge for some reason.

EDIT: Hmm curiously it depends on what account I'm logged in with - when I tested with Edge I wasn't logged in at all.

If I'm using my original "brand" account it happens, if I switch to my Google account it doesn't even on FF.

EDIT2: Clearing cookies and logging in again also massive reduces it, though it is still there - it is happening over more than one PC, different internet connections, etc.

Personally think it is something they've screwed up while trying to defeat ad-blocking though rather than malice.

That is strange and I agree they've screwed up. I know someone on chrome who said they have a yellow bar where the seek bar is for a split second before it vanishes and the video loads, which IIRC is the ad trying to load.

Youtube apparently targeting adblock users with page delays.

Not aimed at you, just using your post to reference.

I'm not sure why people are getting butthurt over the delay IF they are indeed using an adblocker or other method to circumvent the ads on Youtube rather than pay for Premium.... Either pay for it or suck up any delays or other glitches that may happen whilst you try to circumvent it.

Oh I don't disagree. I use an adblocker on my desktop machine. So if I get delays then so be it.

Entitlement.

Entitlement.

Or they're following the FBI's advice, you know, either/or I suppose :D

FBI said:
Use an ad blocking extension when performing internet searches. Most internet browsers allow a user to add extensions, including extensions that block advertisements.

Or that when the web is so dangerous that even the NSA and CIA etc all use Ad-Blockers too, why wouldn't the "general public" also do so?

Plus, with the huge number of ways people can give "direct" financial support the channels they view, if they are unhappy with how Youtube treats its "customers" then withdrawing financial support for YT whilst still supporting the channels via other means is a valid form of protest, and we wouldn't want to ban people protesting would we.

I mean ultimately that still comes back around to entitlement

"Why should I have to pay for a service or be forced to watch adverts, it's not fair  ". If someone is unhappy with how YouTube treats it's customers then stop using the service and use something like Daily Motion or Vimeo.

YouTube isn't an essential service. Pay for premium or do the dance trying to get around adverts but to complain they're making it hard for add blockers... what did you expect lol

Finishing my month free trial of YouTube premium and missing it considerably more than I thought I would. I only initially signed up as I was working away for a few days and the train WiFi was always ropey on the trip - signed up for the free trial so I could download 10/15 videos to watch en-route.

Immediately loved that there were no ads on the mobile/iPad version, it's great being able to watch videos in the background whilst doing other stuff on my iPad - and also really liked that I could just treat some videos like podcasts, lock my phone and just listen to them in the background. I tend to watch quite long videos on YouTube by the few channels I'm subscribed too (30-40 minute videos released weekly/bi-weekly) and without premium you'd end up with 3 to 4 ads per video on these.

The added benefit was when I got back home and put YouTube on the TV for my daughter, there were no more ads on the videos that she would watch!

Very tempted to sign up for a full subscription, I'm just in that phase of justifying it to myself now.

Youtube seem to be taking a "boiling the frog" approach to ramping up the volume of adverts.
As a not-premium user, I understand that some amount of adverts are necessary to pay the bills. However, Google seem to be deliberately pushing beyond the threshold of the volume and minimum length of ads that are tolerable to push users to sign up for premium.
5 second ads are personally tolerable, but with 20s unskippable ads I may as well be watching TV. Regardless of the merits of charging, it feels like egregious strong arm tactics and the result is that I'm resentful of most adverts. My viewing was overwhelmed by Temu ads last month and it annoyed the s*** out of me. As a result I now have incredibly negative view of that company and will never, ever, purchase from them - which I doubt is why they paid Google for so much advertising...
