Isn't there one of the Z170 boards that has a modded bios to take an 8700K and it works just fine?
Quite a few boards will work fine with a modded BIOS. You do still need to short a couple of CPU pins to reflect the change made on Coffee Lake. Some of the high-end Z170 boards have better power delivery than the mainstream Z370 boards.

BIOS tools have revealed that Z370 boards already have a setting for 8-cores.

z390 is just a renamed z370, still on 22nm process.

Yes how true

What they need is a real new chipset. Quadruple the Dmi bus speeds add at the very least 4 more pcie lanes direct to the CPU. Just to many pinch points now with Mvme drives / USB speeds and they are only going to get faster and need more bandwidth.
