Z4/M Owners Thread

To be fair, after my experience with the control arm ball joints I fear the track rods ball joints may be the worst part of the job! Adding penetrating fluid this week to hopefully break any seized joint before the brute force comes out on Sunday!

The struts look reasonably simple in comparison... I hope!

Yup, mine were seezed completely and had to be cut off :o

Not my car but owned by a very good friend. He's done most things you can to his Z4 so I though it may be useful for anyone who wanted to know if something fits, or can be coded.

He fitted a VF330 super charger to it last year.

If anyone has any questions I can pass them on :)

how many of you have a gap-tech? i got one straight away when i got the car. it's got to be the best purchase for your Z4 a must have IMO. unless your grudas with a filthy coupe

It's actually a very clean coupe! let the hate flow through your curling tongs!!

lol, i cut my own hair does that make me a hairdresser? it's a zero all over so no tongs involved.

i do like the look of the coupe. it's going to be a future classic along with the Z4M's. if I had one I'd be overservicing it and preventative maintenance everywhere on it. The only issue is someone plowing into you and writing it off so I'd never use it as a daily. people who know nothing about cars could easily mistake it for an old jag or aston martin. it's got that look about it.

My question is, and it's not meant to be offensive, I genuinely don't get it, but what's the point?

It's a Z4 with terrible electric steering and less power than a Z4M, and no benefits. Why not save the cash that he's spent modifying it and purchase a Z4M?

an extra 105HP = 50% more power = no benefits

Uh, a Z4M has 338BHP, this is 8 less.

Super charging a 3.0 BMW Z4 makes 330BHP (according to the tuner).

So you have a less powerful Z4 with god awful electric steering and standard brakes.

The modifications cost around £7k from what I gather. a 3.0 Z4 + £7k gets you close to Z4M money, why not just go for the much better car?

The electric steering is not that bad.. not as good as full hydraulic setup but it's perfectly fine. Enough feedback from it as is.

It's horrific to have such a poor system in what is supposed to be a sports car. Whether or not you dont mind it, it still adds to my point, whats the point in spending Z4M money modifying a not as good Z4 for less results?

The electric steering is terrible, it's the worst aspect of the car by far. My E39 has better steering then the Z4 by some margin which is simply unacceptable on a sports car.

Jebus, if even non sporty Fox thinks that then it must be horrific.
So you haven't actually spent a decent amount of time at the wheel of a non m Z4 then ? I personally find it more than adequate. Yes it could be better but you can't have it all without paying a massive extra.

It was a massive own goal when even a 316i has better steering than your then all-new flagship Roadster.

It's one of the main issues with the Z4 and it's a shame as it stopped it achieving the critical acclaim it would have otherwise deserved.

Any attempt to say otherwise is surely a bit fanboyish, it's really stark how obviously bad it is - it's probably the worst steering of any decent car I've ever driven.

Look forward to the report on how that suspension overhaul goes as I'd like to do the same. Might sway me between diy and local specialist. Considering how it's probably pretty worn at 88k I not quite sure I follow how the steer is said here to be so bad. The little vagueness could be my worn bushes. Our A3 is hardly better, being more like a video game wheel with the force feedback switched off.....

I drove 2 before I got my Z4M. They were terrible and I didn't swap my mx5 for another 3 years because of how bad they were. The Z4M is in another league, hence my confusion why you would bother modifying a non M to sub M standards.

This car has the awful SMG gearbox too!

He's always been one to do things differently and doesn't need to save the cash. The supercharger kit was around 4K all in and a fairly quick home build job over a weekend. The supercharger delivers power fantastically and sounds great. It's his weekend fun show car so logic doesn't always play a part when you're invested in something.

I've seen it a fair bit at various Z4 meets, people who've spent well in excess of what they could have upgraded to an M for, and most of the time they're left with a car worth no more than a standard unmodified one. It seems crazy to me, but they normally seem happy, and it's nice to have a project I suppose :)

I'm glad i'm not the only one who doesn't get the logic!

But that's been the way of people tuning cars for decades, you pour lots of money in to make something unique and get little of the outlay back. It's been going on since the cars were produced, no one every claimed it made a logical business case.
Adding a supercharger will given better low end torque anyway, the example above appears as an attempt to make a unique car not a clone, fair play to the chap.
