Hey folks!

So im caught up in the debate at the moment regarding the 'Zero' drinks vs Standard sugar drinks...

Personally, I only drink I would say around 3 cans of fizzy drink a week, a sprite or a coca cola.

Never diet or max or zero, just the usual original variety.

My colleague sings the praises of 'Zero' drinks ala Coke Zero, Sprite Zero etc, claiming as they have no sugar they are fine to drink (in his case, by the bucketload).

I know they contain aspartame, which, if you are led to believe, is dangerous.

The problem is, nearly most things seem to contain that now! Even sugar free, or low sugar ribena has it in!

Then you have sweeteners for tea/coffee, which if they don't contain aspartame, use sucralose instead, again, if you are led to believe, can also be dangerous.

What is the general non-tin-hat consencus regarding these drinks/sweeteners?

They still get the large quantities of E numbers in the form of colourings and flavourings. But the main thing with drinking large amounts of coke is all that caffene =o

All I know is that I would rather have 1cal per bottle of pepsi max than 300cal bottle of pepsi. Even if you only have 3 or full fat pepsis a day then you are having nearly half of youe recommended limit of cals.

Too much of anything like that will be bad for you anyway, but the non-sugar ones just contain other rubbish instead.

They are harmless, i seem to remember the study that said they give people cancer was done on rats, and the guy had given them a dose of aspartame equivalent to about 5 years of human consumption in one go or something.

nothing wrong with sweeteners, however large quantities still aren't good for you.
I stay of the full sugar A they taste horrible and b make you more thirsty due to the sugar content.

The main reason I'd avoid any sugar free drinks is that aspartame tastes disgusting.

The only time I have fizzy drinks is a coke if I'm very hung over.

To dehydrate yourself more?

orange juice is the best thing to drink when you're hung over, I always take a carton up to bed with me when I get home from drinking :p

Like AH I don't drink "fat coke" drinks because a) they taste too sweet, and 2) they don't quench your thirst.

I have more problems with caffeine than I do with sweeteners, so I drink decaf soft drinks and decaf tea whenever possible.

That use to be true for things like fanta, but know they have the zero version they taste fine.
Diet coke and diet pepsi have always tasted fine.
