Zero Punctuation - MGS 4

you doo need to press triangle if you want to aim down the sights for better aim.

Completed the game 4 times on all but highest difficulty and have never felt the need to use ironsights, in fact I think its worse due to the amount of screen it takes up.

First person view for weapons in MGS4 is pretty bad tbo. I only ever used it with the tranq gun. FPS mode would work better if you had a big screen and could see down the iron sights better. I couldn't imagine looking down the iron sights on a sd tv.

What puzzles me however, is how he always goes on about he wants games to further themselves as an art form. Now, surely MGS4 with it's utterly mind boggling (but brilliant) storyline, and film-standard cutscenes is one of the biggest steps in that direction for games? Surely he should appreciate that Kojima was attempting to achieve what he always complains about games not trying to do.

I couldn't disagree more. Plenty of games have done high quality cutscenes and storylines. For me the biggest innovation in terms of telling a story was Half Life 2's attempt to tell a story without the use of cutscenes, leaving the player in control all the time.

Youre joking? That was done before Half-Life 2 and its basically just voice-over. Ive yet to see a cutscene as innovative and well directed as some of the MGS4 ones, they're near hollywood style filming.

Yes but games aren't films. In my opinion cutscenes remove you from the game and remind you that you aren't in control. With Half Life 2 it felt like things were happening whether you were there/watching at all, I found that really immersive.

I haven't played HL2 before but doesn't that indicate the cut scene is not important? basically you can still understand and finish the game without watching the cut scene, unless it has a very simple story.

they didn't use cut scenes to tell the story, the GAME told the story instead of putting little bits of FILM in the way.

A much better way IMO.

To be fair, that's a pretty decent review.
...

I've not played MGS4 yet, but he's spot on
....

Wow! Major props goes to you!

You managed to pick two points in my post and make me look like a fool!

Now if you read what I posted...

To be fair, that's a pretty decent review.

Yes, it's an interesting watch and provokes some good thoughts about the MGS series in general. You think it's a poor review? That's your opinion... I thought he does a good job of entertaining me - which to be fair, is all his reviews are really aiming for.

I've not played MGS4 yet, but he's spot on when it comes to the other games and I'm a very big fan of the series!
No, I haven't played MGS4 yet... so shoot me

But if you compare a lot of what he said to the other games in the series he's entirely correct, and I very much doubt the core style of Metal Gear has evolved THAT MUCH.

Now please go and act like an arse somewhere else

Theres a story in hl2?

All the storey seems to come from the gman cut scenes the rest just seems to be shooting and occasionally some people talking. which takes me out of the game more as i generally with have to just sit there with cross hairs on the screen and watch them (basically a cut scene with a hud on it, which is annoying), or **** about with stuff around them and ignore them till they let me proceed with the shooting.

ah...if only the npc's of hl2 were killable like on hl1... :(

There is one shoting game that I really enjoyed with good storyline is Max Payne. And Max Payne 2 did it even better.

I still remember the scene where you have to save the girl by sniping those enemies chasing after her, that was tense! This very idea showed up at RE4 as well.

Can we stick Spoilers in the damned title if people are going to continually post them....

I've already found one thing out from this thread, and it would have been another if it weren't for -Tauren-

Why come into a thread that is obviously going to contain spoilers (it's about a post release review for Christs sake) then complain about spoilers :/
