Hellgate: Londom demo thread

There's too much repetition, you go down steps in the street into a derelict room & further down the street you see steps & go down & its the same room & likewise the underground zombie rooms off the station are all alike, If any of you guys think this is good then you aint tried Painkiller & its add-on as its much more fun than this

The thing is, this game is meant as the spiritual successor to Diablo, the diablo games could also be criticised for being repetitive. I think it maybe depends on what people are expecting out of the game as to how they percieve it. Being a big fan of the Diablo games I am more than happy with it. I was keeping my fingers crossed for Diablo II but in 3D. That is basically what seems to have been delivered. I don't think it can be compared to things like WoW or Guildwars etc because it isn't trying to compete with them imho.

The fun in this game is all about the repetition to a certain extent. It's about the mindless yet almost hypnotic slaughter of the minions, the hectic and down right evil encounters with the big bad bosses, the fun of grouping up with some friends or even strangers, the insane amount of loot drops, and the fun of levelling up and customizing your character and unlocking new skills.

I know there are probably plenty of people who think that things have moved on a lot since the Diablo games, and maybe Hellgate could, or should, have had better graphics and more inspiring gameplay, but I cant help but think it is simply a fantastic game. I will admit to having one concern though, I do wonder what incentive there is going to be to pull in the monthly subs, because as things stand I'm not sure even I would be preparred to pay a monthly sub for it for any more than a few months (I'm hoping that they will be releasing lots of new content that maybe subs get access to first or even exclusively).

I haven't tried the demo seeing as how I'm in beta, I'm not even sure if there is much difference, but I would certainly say that if you have the slightest interest in the game, then you should try and not be put off by the average graphics (it's certainly no Unreal III) and give the game a chance to grow on you, I'd say at least try a couple of the classes to at least level 10 and try and get involved in group play a couple of times, it makes the experience so much more fun.

Tbh, after playing the demo, even if the full game is twice as good it still wouldn't impress me. Reminds me of the Tabula Rasa beta, very uninspiring...oh well.

SIGH!

Anyone else get this stupid error when installing. What a waste of time that was downloading that. :(

Hellgate_Install_Error.jpg

Says the file is missing when it clearly is not! Can someone verify the file size please.

Thanks!

EDIT: Whoops I was looking in the wrong place... hang on, may be able to just copy that file to the right location. Why of why did I notice after posting it up!

EDIT2: Yup that fixed it. FFS! Lol.

Off topic, but can u link me to your desktop image plz :)

Bored the crap out of me, doesn't look amazing and has gameplay that nearly put me to sleep. Would still play diablo/2 over this.

Oh well, back to ut3 for me :p

I've completed Painkiller :)

Well with the NDA lifted I guess I can air the one gripe I have with the game.

It's great but the beta is currently plagued by a memory leak which invariably crashes your game anywhere from after 10 minutes to after about an hours play. Everyone gets it, even those with oodles of ram. I hope they get it fixed for retail because it makes the whole thing an exercise in frustration, i.e. if you crash in the middle of an area, you are sent back to the farthest station you have reached and therefore have to work your way back through and clear areas you already did.

It's the kind of thing you can put up with in a beta since you're playing for free, but I can't imagine subscribers being very happy if it isn't dealt with. Luckily I've had plenty of practice in dealing with gaming frustration (yes, I played Neocron for an extended period of time :D).

Yeah hope they fix that memory leak for release or there will be lots of angry people.

Apart from that and the other bugs in beta, I love this game. It's like my favourite brainless shooter (previously zombie infection CS mod) but with those lovely RPG elements like loot and character progression that keep me interested.

Roll on release day.

awful when people who shouldnt be posting screenshots are. (read the NDA, it still isnt lifted) and even worse when they take them on rubbish computers.

tom, who knows what your doing there to get such a bad screenshot if your running the rig that the benchmarks are off in your sig. prolly copy pasting it into paint. good for some things not good for others and exactly why theres an NDA.

Who cares about some lame as NDA :p, the whole "NDA" thing should be binned it's been proven time and time again people don't stick to them.

Just for the record I didn't take that screenshot.

The NDA period for the general Beta test is officially over! THANK YOU all for being as good as you have been on this. Feel free to post, email, phone call, and alert your local news station about your play experiences!

Anyway, I don't see much wrong with those screenies to be honest, (though the animations do irritate me slightly). Visually it's perfectly servicable for the type game HGL is, being an action focused, online RPG with randomly generated terrain.

The demo hasn't exactly wow'd me but I fail to see why the game is being talked down quite as badly as it is. What worries me is just how much actual game there is going to be in HGL. Aside from the obvious level and loot grinding, what I've seen hasn't been particularly earth-shattering. Sure, the game is Diablo's "spiritual successor" but you would have hoped there would at least be some sort of innovation here. That, and the fact Flagship keep trying to advertise their game on future promises (see above link) makes for a bit of a 50/50 purchase I think.
Fingers crossed retail HGL and it's immediate patches flesh out the game into something with a little more substance. It definitely has potential, but then the premise always has...

EDIT: Oh yeah, and why the 'eck are all the character creation options tuned to churning out a moody, emo-kid army? This also worries me.
