Why the Wii needs to fail!

I think the Wii is great. It's not my cup of tea, but it's great for filling an area of the market for casual or party games etc. I personally don't like a lot of Nintendo games, but I wouldn't begrudge anyone else enjoying them because I know they are hugely popular.

I think there is enough room in the market for fun games like whats on the Wii and games for graphics hoars like me. I don't think Sony or Microsoft are really too worried when you look at how many PS2's are still selling or how many copies Halo3 shifted at launch - they're not missing out!

The OP is a muppet. Nuff Said!

If you dont like a console, DONT BUY IT!! Let the other tens of millions of people that thinks its great buy it and you stick to your shiny graphics and rubbish gameplay (in comparison).

Also, if the OP is such a 'serious gamer' (as others have said, what a stupid phrase) who prefers graphics to gameplay. Why is he even whining about consoles in the first place. He should be sat in front of his super computer playing PC games.

repeat after me,

graphics do not make a game good.
Good Ingame graphics and high res also means a lot to many people like myself....As i would not be happy playing at the wii low res on my 1080p plasma....

The same way i would not play PC games at 640x480 on my dell 24" monitor no matter how good the gameplay is...

Absolutely rubbish thread. Some people never cease to amaze me.

Serious Gamer? lol, what a stupid phrase.

Paul
There really doesn't need to be a distinction between a serious gamer and a non serious gamer. Anyone should be able to enjoy games, if you don't think you'd like the Wii, don't buy one. The fact is there are many people that aren't into the sort of games you get on a 360 or PS3 so why say they shouldn't play on a Wii because they aren't serious enough? Games are a form of entertainment, they don't need to be serious.

The xbox360 and PS3 when they were released were already out of date when compared to a PC, they aren't the cutting edge of hardware, they're just a simple affordable package for people to enjoy without stress of system requirements or driver issues.

The wii has encased several features (read: motion sensitivity and light gun esque technology) into a affordable package. This is the first time it's been done, light guns have always had only one use and been quite pricey when taking into account the lack of flexibility and motion sensitive controllers were rare and expensive - it is the cutting edge of affordable technology as far as controllers go.

The innards of consoles will never be the cutting edge purely because the cutting edge is so expensive, the average console owner will not spend £1000+ on a console like a hardcore PC enthusiast would, look at the outrage at the release cost of the PS3.

whats wrong with the technology of the wii? surely what the wii is doing is adding to the gaming experience..

you cannot call yourself a serious gamer or even any sort of gamer if all you care about is graphics

The graphics on the Wii are nice if the developers took they're time in making the games, take Zelda for example the graphics on that are pretty cool and the gameplay is freaking awesome!

the wii is great. a 'serious' gamer appreciates just how good games like zelda, resi 4 and metroid prime 3 are

Good Ingame graphics and high res also means a lot to many people like myself....As i would not be happy playing at the wii low res on my 1080p plasma....

The same way i would not play PC games at 640x480 on my dell 24" monitor no matter how good the gameplay is...

well i have no problem with it. i guess some of us know that graphics and visuals arent the only thing that matters. in fact it really all that important.

i cant stand this elitist attitude people tend to have. its the same with people who say 'oh ill never go back to sd dvd now i have my 1080p plasma". give over sd films are still perfectly fine, with some of them coming dangerously close to being HD quality. and its the same with audio too, where people will absolutely insist on suggesting a grands worth of components when somebody wants a set of pc speakers.

this drive to ever push forward and improve graphics and sound and everything else is fine, but it makes people such as yourself (chapperel) loose sight and ignore what was previously perfectly acceptable. the wii is a cheap console with average graphics, but one hell of a control system. it works and it works well, and there are some amazing games out now and to come soon. ignoring the wii means you are only loosing out.

Hardcore gamer...

The Wii is great, good innovative gaming and the graphics aren't bad. I am fed up to the eye teeth of "next gen" games that have "must see" graphics but a rubbish, short single player campaign.

Gameplay > Graphics. Always.

I still play old games that have some of the best gameplay ever. Bloodwych still has a grip on me, for example.

There's still the market for cutting edge technology (CPU/GFX wise) so there's no doubt in my mind the next Xbox or PS will be pushing console limits in that sense - we may see some Wiimote style control methods from either MS or Sony, but I don't believe either company see any mileage in it, it's not their style.

The next 'Wii' could be different again in terms of controls, but I'm fairly confident the next Nintendo console will be HD etc, once it's a cheap enough technology to fit in a small box.

Of course, a serious gamer would appreciate the effort Nintendo have gone to, and with games like Metroid and MoH:H2 showing just how good the controls can be in a 'serious' game, I think the future of consoles are safe with the Wii being a success...

I agree with pretty much everything you said except this. I don't see how an SD film can be close to HD quality when HD simply means a higher res. Yes it can have very good quality, but the point of HD is that an HD version would have at least as good quality but at a higher res.

It works the other way round though, some HD films apparently don't look much better than their SD counterparts.

i can show you screen captures of gladiator and even american history x upscaled on my lcd. they look nothing short of amazing they really do

I'm not saying they can't look good, but the fact is even with upscaling they aren't HD. The extra information simply isn't there.

I like the Wii, but i think the FPS controls using the wiimote are not as good as a sixaxis or the xbot controller.

I played Crysis demo with *** xbot controller and it, in my opinion, plays better with that that the mouse and keyboard - and CoD 4 plays just fine with a Sixaxis (which i prefer the feel of to the 360 controller myself)

i know i should wash my mouth out with soap, but its great to see programmers modify games to work well with joypads.

Back to the orignal comments, the wiimote is fun, but it bloody hurts your hands after a 4 hour session! And as for innovation, i'm not too sure. It's great for multi purpose motion detection (ie can be adapted to many games) but Sony got there first with the negcon, guncon, dance mats and especially the eye-toy. Nintendo just managed to make one controller that can handle many motion controlled games - and it works quite* well.

(quite* :- i find it innacurate and unpredicatable - so maybe need to look at my setup!)

I agree the Wii is a pile of you know what... but it's not aimed at me.
I can only think that the Wii is good for gaming in general, bringing it into the mainstream.

You shouldn't really be playing any games console for 4 hours though, to be fair! :D

I've played my Wii for a couple of hours straight and not really found my hands or arms hurting, over a variety of games. Playing something like Zelda or Call of Duty I really don't struggle with as I'm not having to do a great deal. The only pain I've suffered was in my shoulder - but that was hammering Wii Sports for the whole launch weekend!

I disagree over the control method for FPS games being better on a pad. The latest Wii FPS games have been said by a fair few reviewers to being as close to mouse and keyboard, and I certainly felt more immersed and in control with the Wii controls than I have on a pad (thinking of the controls right from GoldenEye and Timesplitters to CoD2). But it's horses for courses, as this thread has shown.

your just being pedantic now, i said dangerously close to being hd quality. i do know what resolution means:)

I suppose I am being quite pedantic, but really HD simply means higher resolution. A perfect picture at a lower res, while very good quality, is still not any closer to HD than anything else at that res.

I do know what you mean. I can't be bothered with HD-DVD/Blu-ray for the time being. DVDs look pretty good on my HDTV, so I can't be bothered to buy expensive HD players. The fact that a Wii doesn't output HD wouldn't put me off at all. That would be like refusing to watch TV because it's not broadcast in HD.
