It's All About Image

I care about my image giving a true representation of myself from a first impression. If that means I have to put a lot of effort in to achieve that, then I'm happy to do it! Sometimes it means going with the crowd, sometimes it means doing my own thing!

I don't mind people doing or thinking what they want, what I do object to is people putting their opinions onto other people, whether it is taking the mick out of someone, pushing themselves above the crowd etc. Usually comes from low self esteem.
Depends on circumstance and the level of banter. If one of my mates came out with a bit of make up on, he is 100% certified to get a ribbing from the rest of us; but we do that kind of ribbing knowing the "victim" will not be offended.

Well, you say that, but especially amongst blokes, its all a big psycho game of one upmanship, every man for himself. If you and a mate both saw some hot young women and both fancied her, all those little games that you'd been playing earlier would suddenly come into effect.

You assume the "victim" will not be offended, but then, its just group mentality, blokes are ******** to each other. Some guys are fine with this, I find a kind of dumbing down, mob mentality that pees me off. I don't really give a damn whether you think x/y/z is gay looking/ sappy/ doesn't conform. You're just a bunch of repressed psycho losers who play mind games to try and feel good about yourselves. I don't need it, and I don't care to hang around with people like that.

If it were up to groups of lads to get anything done, we'd still be flinging poo at each other whilst the strongest would mate. Thankfully, we progressed away from frat boy physically based success to an intelligence based meritocracy. Sort of.

Obviously not aimed at you personally :)

Have to agree - best response ever :D

Being a man in a manly way?
I have to agree with what the OP has said, way too many people on here judge one another based on what they think they want/should be!

there's definitely a middle-ground, dude. you're not either sat around drinking darjeeling and commenting on how spiffing everything is, or throwing kebabs at old people - blokish banter is very fun - as long as no-one is getting hurt by it. we all make fun of each other in my group of friends - I don't go home thinking "jesus, do they really think I'm gay? they noticed I have ginger hair, are they really repulsed by that?". obviously that's just me, but I can't be the only one who enjoys a good mick-take with the lads!

ps. couple of swearies in your post

I think the main point he was making is the fact that SOME people do things not for themselves but to try and make other people perceive them as 'cool' or 'manly' or whatever. They do this to the detriment of doing things they enjoy.

Thanks. That about sums it up really. :)

In the animal kingdom, image is the foundation on which organisms get laid. For that reason, I value it.

The animal kingdom is retarded. On the same basis, TV Evangelists make millions with their image, whilst basically contributing nothing to society.

Seemed relevant at the time.

a lot of people are too concerned to what others think of them, lack of self esteem drives this need for peer acceptance and confirmation, its all controlled by the media , they tell you whats in 'fashion' and people are made to feel left out if they don't conform to ever changing constructs that are perceived to be ' in vogue'.

in my experience , these kind of people literally don't make decisions for themselves , their opinions are not there own but borrowed ones form the media , their image isn't their own and also borrowed from the media.

How so, when we are animals? None of this "evolved out of it" crap, we are animals. Period. Always have, always will. :)

Our behaviour for things like courting are still dominated by animal instincts. We all find ourselves attracted to physically attractive people. Not what the media defines as "attractive", but we are all attracted to such things as facial symmetry, etc. as it is a sign of good health.

Then there is the actual behaviour side after the initial attraction. Everywhere you see it, girls want a man who can stand on his own, is possibly cocky or slightly arrogant, knows what he wants, and represents a strong set of genes. Men want a girl to look after them and the obvious. Both will tell you otherwise because we just don't "get it." Women often say their ideal partner would be someone to listen to them, be polite, yada. Men may say "someone who gives bj's at the click of my fingers" or similar to what the women say they want. The reason for all the confusion is it is our instinct telling us what we want, and we can't always understand it.

LoL :D

A perfect example would be any major city on a Saturday night. A fairly large majority of guys will be wearing jumpers with horizontal stripes. It's like playing a really difficult game of 'Where's Wally', except they're all Wally's, to be quite honest.
I think we've discovered the reason for your rant. You went out on Saturday night and someone was wearing the same jumper as you, weren't they? :D
