Blood Doners

Nope, you can have a drunken 'fumble' with another guy and you can NEVER donate blood.

Just don't come crying here if someone dies because there was a lack of blood. I understand the risks, but it's not as if much sex is had unprotected anyway. The thought just reminds me of 1 guy and his mud pie...

It is all based on outdated and prejudiced ideas.

Not all gay men are promiscious, and most gay men practise safe sex, because of the HIV/AIDS scare and the safer sex message that resulted. The same can not be said for heterosexuals - who are currently being infected in their 1000's - at a much higher rate than homosexuals.

Advancements in testing now mean that it no longer takes 6 months for HIV/AIDS to show up in a blood test - it is a matter of weeks.

If the National Blood Service updated it's policies and procedures to reflect these changes it would no doubt find a whole host of new 'safe' donors.

The blood i donated can be used in 48hrs from last night, so a week is in reality still too long, however they are old rules, how do they know I don't have aids and hiv (as far as im aware i don't but thats not the point)!

:( i have a bruise like the woman said! She said to apply firm pressure so i did, then stopped, she then said i was silly and should have kept applying firm pressure, and will probably end up with a bruise! i did :( It looks pretty nasty, if i didn't know how i got it i would be scared lmao!

Bruises are common.

More accurately, you need to keep fairly firm pressure on - not enough that it's an effort to maintain - for about ten minutes. After that you should be fine. Pressing too hard is actually bad - it slows down the clotting.

I started giving blood after 9/11 (though I live in the UK) as there was some stuff on the news at the time about blood stocks being low. I'd never given before then, I guess I was a bit apprehensive in case it hurt.

So I was brave and started going, and it was fine. It doesn't hurt much at all, and the feeling that you might be helping someone is great. The only thing that hurts a bit is if you get someone who doesn't hit the vein first time and has to have a few goes. It never happened to me until my last session a couple of weeks ago - and even that wasn't too painful. The guy had 3 goes in one arm then 2 other nurses came over and between them found a suitable vein in the other arm. No problem in the end.

I started getting all blase about it for a while, I didn't get dizzy or light headed so I never used to relax on the bed afterwards or have a drink/biscuit. Then one day I left the session, jumped in the car and drove off, and almost passed out a mile down the road.

Luckily there was a place to pull over so I just parked and turned the engine off, and sat there resting for 10 mins. :o

These days I always stay for a cup of tea and a biscuit (or 5), better safe than sorry.

Last time I went, I was asking for my cup of tea and managed to burp and hiccup at the same time. I started gulping and going purple and the nurses all thought I was having a seizure, it took a few minutes of them all flapping bigtime before I could tell them I'd almost chucked up my breakfast due to burping - and that it was nothing to do with giving blood. :D

I'm sorry, I'm still wondering about someone calling themselves "Vampire" posting in the blood donation thread. What was the story again? :p

Lol don't worry, it's just a coincidence, I'm not a real Vampire. :)

I will give my blood when needed by others. I consider it as a service of others. Giving blood nothing happened to our life. Today many blood donor societies are exist.

I've always had a hard time with people getting blood out of me. I had to have blood tests every week or more during my last pregnancy and I was always left bruised and they often had to try 2 or 3 times to even get any blood out. It's very slow as well. I'm anaemic most of the time and I used to weigh too little to be able to give blood but I don't think I do now, I am still anaemic though. I'm also still breastfeeding and am not sure if you can give blood whilst doing so.

If I'm ever not anaemic again then I'll look into this, will be very hard for me as although I've had tons of needles I'm really phobic and nearly faint every time I have blood taken. I get shaky, palpitations and dizzy afterwards, so I never go alone to have one either.

How do you find out where/when they are? I had a look on their website and could only find a thing to book appointments.

Awsome. There's a place only half a mile with me, available all next week!
Dunno if it'll help me overcome a fear of needles/injections, but an mp3 player + the feeling of helping someone should help :D

I put off a blood test to help me for 2 weeks, i have wanted a tattoo since high school, but i just can't do it, my brain refuses to acknowledge that needles are a nice thing, i have a genuine phobia, i can't help it, there isn't much else i'm afraid of but show me a needle and i will cry like a *****

This is the reason i don't give blood, i wish i could but **** that
