Virgin Media... who else just died?

Yes, even with cable. Always has been.

No it hasnt - only since the NTL Telewest merger has it been marketed as an 'upto' service - previously it was known as an Unlimited service...

Mine wasn't working when I got in from work last night (about 1am) but was fine when I woke up this morning at 7

Already posted in the networking section but mine was down for a total of 17 hours ish! 9pm yesterday - 1:30ish pm today, twice in 1 week now it has been down for more than 10 hours.

The service is nothing what it was this time last year.

You were meant to let me know when ti came back on your rat! ;)

Mine was off till god knows what hour this morning, as Mattey1 was around mine till early hours, complaining his ass off about it! :D

Mine died last night, all the UK players in our clan dropped off the server leaving the euro guys wondering what happened lol.

Think I was off for about 10-15 mins, didnt notice I was back on til someone started talking to me on msn as I was watching tv.

As robert says it's always been upto. however nearly everyone gets full speed. That's the difference. Your pretty much guaranteed full speed on cable. Where you aren't with adsl.

Cable uses a hybrid coax/fibre network and the cable is more likely to support the advertised speed. this is true but it is still a contended service and as such advertised as up to.

It depends where you live, why the router might synch at 20mb if all the other people on your street are downloading then the actual data throughput isn't going be as fast.

ADSL is the same except the contention is at the exchange and on BT it is becoming more and more common but there are multiple "virtual pipes" per exchange and it is just luck, you might be on 1 with a load of old people or you might get connected to the one that has 3 Net cafes linked to it.

I work at an ISP so know little about how ADSL and even some cable works so please ask any questions and I will do my best to explain.

I must admit I cant qualify the BY service but Im 100% sure that the NTL service was never marketed as an 'up to' service until the merger.

Im well aware of the technicalities regards to the service and that contention and saturation means it can at best be considered 'up to' but it was never marketed as such.

My rebuttal was against dbmzk1s linked image rather than the service itself...

Nice ninja MHayes - you amateur ;)

You want to read some of the posts on ntl forums if you think most people get full speeds. It seems the complete opposite, most people dont.

I can get full speed out of my 20mb connection on cable until about 5pm, then it slows down to 5mb or less until about midnight when everyone goes to bed.

Mine went off for around an hour between 9:45 & 10:45 I think it was.

Its first time i've had noticeable trouble with my connection in ages, infact its been so long i've had trouble with it I can't remember what was the last problem and how long ago it was, I was kind of annoyed as I was in middle of doing something but I guess I can't really fault the service i've had for so many years as you can't expect a 24 7 year on years problem free service.

HEHE I was going to say that but I thought I would offer help as I suppose I do work in the industry and have a slight advantage so it would be a little nasty.

It probably wasn't advertised, OFCOM have only recently cracked down on the upto thing, after LLU and 8mb ADSL was out. It was probably in the T&C somewhere though.

At the end of the day cable should be better than ADSL, it is using a cable that was put there for that purpose, unlike ADSL and the copper section is much better quality and is a much shorter length. the downside is the entire cable network is owned by 1 company so you cannot chose your ISP so you are stuck with traffic shaping and poor Customer service, blocked ports, dynamic IP address etc.

The reason ADSL bandwidth restrictions are so low is that most ISPs use BT wholesale as the provider, the kit in the exchange and the back haul from the exchange to the ISP. Ofcom force BT to charge loads of money for this backhaul (central pipes) in an attempt to reduce their monopoly and encourage LLU (when provider install their own kit rather than relying on BT.)

However in areas where there are a lot of users or Virgin have not upgraded the network for a while and also student (scumbags ;) ) areas it can be just as bad.

Technically ther are within the rules as long as you get 50.1 contention rati which = dialup speeds.

Enjoy or get a leased line. :p

thats because your downloading to much. And it traffic shapes between 5pm and midnight.

Also a few hundred/thousands users complaining out of the million of customers.

After the nationwide outage our once-solid VM Internet connection (4Mb cable) is now dreadfully intermittent - it will work fine for a few minutes, and then die, and a couple of minutes later come back to life for a bit before dropping off again. It's immensely irritating, and prevents us from doing anything requiring a stable connection (i.e. MSN, online gaming). It's better than it was yesterday, but still awful.

Anyone else having this problem? I've reset the cable modem (turn it off, leave it for 15 minutes, turn it back on again), but to no avail.

Is anyone elses running like a dog tonight?

Its got to the stage where I can't actually be arsed using the Internet as its just annoying the hell out'a me. :(

Yes! Mines be running shockingly all night. Just loading simple websites are taking ages and tbh really p*ssing me off.

Been abit iffy for the last few night now.
