Have you ever pirated anything?

My parents taught me that theft was wrong - a lesson obviously not bothered with these days.

I think you'll probably be surprised what Mr and Mrs stoofa got up to before you were born.
Some things aren't seen as stealing.
eg I've got this latest video of ET off a bloke at work.
A bloke at work is selling a video recorder for £50 (when they were £400)
I've got this bottle of whiskey off a bloke at work
etc etc

In my opinion it's no worse than second hand sales. Both result in someone owning a product without having paid the developer.

But with a second hand product, the developer has already had their payment.

If everyone pirated, the developer gets nothing.

suddenly the pirates are innocent, sitting quietly in their homes downlaoding stuff whilst at the same time you got thugs/chav's (whatever you want to call them) roaming the streets looking for weak targets to mug and stab.

so who has chosen the correct lifesytle the pirate or the chav????
Both are choosing to be dishonest, just because your choice of illegal activity is a "white collar" crime doesn't make you any less dishonest.

I have never downloaded anything nor have I ever bought additional hard drive space for the purpose of keeping downloaded illegalz stored...

;)

I understand that, however every second hand sale affects the industry in exactly the same way a illegal download does.

Except in the case of second hand sales someone did originally pay the developer. As long as the license allows second hand sales there's no problem

generally the first link in the chain is a legal copy, for most cracks the groups has bought the game, most torrents, and streams are from some one who has ripped a dvd, it just like one copy being sold on several thousand times.

No it doesn't, as long as a single copy of whatever has been paid for, only a single copy is still in use and there are no prohibitions on second hand sales as part of a license a second hand sale is a legitimate and expected part of the lifecycle of a product.

Exactly, now I never nick stuff in real life, but downloading is another story, it just does not feel like you're doing anything wrong or that you're harming anybody/their feelings.

All the time. I buy the albums that I like after I have heard them. Expensive software gets "reviewed" but that then influences what I recommend to my company to purchase.

I'[d be interested in how many people on this forum own a legal copy of photoshop, bet its lees than the fingers on your hand.

Not really, because the relationship between legitimate copies and illegal ones is not one to one, but one to many. Look at the number of downloads a torrent will get, and that assumes it was made from a legitimately bought copy.

Could also ask how many people have proper legal versions of Windows, I'm sure that'd be pretty low. :p

I mean honestly, forking out £700 or so for hardware then another £150 or whatever for Vista when you can download a 'Genuine' version for free...I wonder what's more tempting.

Thank god DELL gave me this free version of Vista Ultimate...;P
