Organ donor system "presumed consent"

You not having a card to sign isnt your fault but the fault of the system but with the amount of people that are willing to donate and not signing for it, what could it be down to if not laziness ??

Here we are, I'll even make it easy for the people that havent registered but want to http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/how_to_become_a_donor/registration/consent.jsp

thank you.

I wont lie i am a lazy git, I would never have bothered looking for the place to get a form or even a web site, but since you posted the link is there I've just signed up, lets hope when i'm gone it saves someone's life.

I think you will be more responsible than i ever will be for that.

Is it wrong of me to not want my liver to go to an alcoholic if i was to die?

That was just an example but it could apply to many different things, i wouldnt want them to screw up my organs after they have already screwed up their own

Quite a good idea. But if you are really desperate why not just go to China, you can literally pre order organs there for quite a resonable price. It's terrible I know, but if my life depended on an organ I probably would do it.

For those who do support the opt-out scheme; why not conduct blood donations in a similar fashion? Surely, it's equally selfish for people not to donate blood that they have no need for?

Organs are taken from dead people. Dead people have the remarkable property of not caring about anything, nor being inconvenienced by anything.

You're dead. You don't exist any more. They are not your organs.

Strange, I'm fairly sure that the organs wouldn't exist if I wasn't born and spent my life looking after my body. They are my organs, alive or not.

The living can suffer from the thought that people may ignore or fail to respect their wishes once they're dead though. Your argument is poor at best.

Consider... if you are prime donation fodder then you are more likely to have the Docs throw in the towel early to keep you nice and fresh for the next recipient(s).

1 with a opt out system there would not really be a shortage of organs
2 this is not really how doctors work. Im doing my clinical rotations now and can honestly tell you that is really not how doctors work or think

I cant understand the logic behind withholding your organs, if they can help someone why not help them? Many of these people that need organs are young with children that need looking after, if your doing it for religious reasons surly God will give you extra points/virgins for saving someones life?

Just to make this issue very clear for all the others that will likely take your viewpoint...

I disagree with others PRESUMING my consent. They have no authority over my internal organs, therefore I have no moral or spiritual reason to have contact with them in any way.

Remember, just because YOU think its a good thing - there's no excuse to remove consent from others. If more organs are needed, spend the money on advertising and campaign.

Also, what if this were the thin end of the wedge? What other parts of my body might go to 'scientific causes' on what grounds?
That sums up my position too.

I am a registered organ donor, and have been since I was 18. I have registered for donation of every bit of my corpse that might be useful. I carry the card on me. I have informed my family of my wishes.

I strongly oppose this proposed change. Organ donation should only be done with consent, and this isn't consent.

Put the cause aside for the moment and consider the process...

Your corpse is made available to necrophiliacs for sex unless you go somewhere and fill out some forms saying you don't consent. Without those forms, no-one cares if you consent or not. Even with them, your corpse might be used anyway, as mistakes will get made.

It appears that many people are basing their judgements of the proposed change on their own opinion of organ donation, not on the proposed change.

EDIT: To clarify: This is not an organ donation issue. This is a consent issue.

The strongest degree of government coercion that I would support is to put the question on the forms that come round for registering to vote, i.e. a cheap way to make sure that all adults are asked the question.

Or looking at it with a more positive slant, it is encouraging people to confront the question of whether they believe organ donation to be acceptable and under what circumstances. If that makes some people uncomfortable then it is unfortunate but lack of suitable organs and donors is a real problem so I'd prefer healthy living people to have a relatively short period of mental turmoil (if you'll excuse the overly dramatic phrasing) than the alternative of people dying because someone doesn't want to consider the situation.

"encouraging people to confront the question [..]" would be achieved by encouraging people to confront the question (by putting the question in front of them).

This is not encouraging people to confront the question. It's the government answering the question for everybody, and that's a very different thing.

The question isn't the one you refer to, anyway. The question is not whether a person belives organ donation is acceptable and under what circumstances. The question is whether or not a person consents to their own organs being donated when they are dead.

Judging from that post, you would have no objection to necrophiliacs getting to choose sexy corpses from the morgue (perhaps after the useful organs have been removed). Your corpse, your parents' corpses, your childrens' corpses, your lover's corpse...etc.

After all, dead people have the remarkable property of not caring about anything, nor being inconvenienced by anything.
