***Official MacBook Air Thread***

not really impressed with the new release at all. Doesn't look too good and will it really sell that much? I guess Apple aren't going to have released this without doing some form of market research.

They'll sell piles of the things, there's loads of photographers and other creative types out there still using 12" G4 powerbooks on the road because apple didn't replace it in the line up. They'll all buy them...

I hope Apple will do something like a MacBook Air, Take 2! :p

indeed - i definitely never would have any need for it but it just doesn't seem as slick as apple kit usually is!

I guess now I may just concentrate on my imac v mac pro debate! When is the next big apple event where spec bumps are announced?

Having an Apple logo on it will be more than enough reason for a lot of people.

It's not so much 'the best computer for the job' but 'the must have computer for the job'. You can just imagine all the Hollywood hotshots running around with one of these.

The idea behind the actual product is excellent. Some of the things they have done with the whole 'air' thing are really great - especially borrowing a cd from another computer. But the look of the product just doesn't get me. It just doesn't ooze class like the MacBook Pros do. If anything the shape of it is a little odd looking.

yeah fair enough point but to be honest i have hauled a MBP about uni all during my final year and so i thought a macbook would be portable enough without the need for this!

The biggest thing from my point of view is that Intel has designed a CPU specifically for Apple.
Do you honestly believe that? Intel designed a smaller CPU because shrinking die-sizes is what happens with CPUs, and they're letting Apple have it first.

yeah i definitely agree that some genius stuff in it but its the looks that threw me too - really isn't 'appleish' at all! Anyways i guess no point in me giving my opinion if im not even on the lookout for one.

That would be WWDC, June.

Why has the UK been stiffed again on price?
To make up for lost download revenue from iTunes perhaps?

Shame on you Apple.

I still can't identify their target market, it's nearly an identical spec to MacBook except it is 900g lighter, slightly thinner but lacks an optical drive, several ports and costs a lot more. I would have a very hard time justifying buying this over a regular MacBook. Oh and if you ignore the 200Mhz difference between the two versions of the MacBook Air you are esentially paying over £800 for a 64GB SSD!

Because Apple more often than not, over-price their hardware add-ons to "Retail" pricing, even if it's dropped dramatically over the period. Just look at their pricing for 2GB or 4GB RAM built to order upgrades, makes the wallet weep.

If I already had an iMac or MacPro and wanted a portable notebook for taking projects into uni/work and for browsing t'interweb in front of the TV then I would probably get this.

As it happens I'm on the lookout for a desktop replacement and that's going to be a 17" MBP. I had really hoped for some news about new features for the MBP like LED backlit 17" and some other features but I'm not that disappointed.

I would have been kicking myself if I had ordered a MBP just after leopard's release and then they introduced some really huge upgrade at Macworld. I can sleep sound tonight knowing that I can place my order tomorrow and I'll be getting a nice new laptop very soon. :D

So is the casing sealed? i.e. no DIY RAM or HDD upgrades? It's reported that you can't remove the battery.

Yeah it seems that the casing would be sealed. The battery is non -user upgradeable, you ahve to send it to apple to replace the battery.

Also the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, so no upgrade there.

hdd is an ipod hard drive 1.8" . if the case is sealed this would be hard to upgrade too.
