When I got it the engine was pretty much junk. Nobody'd changed the oil in about 30,000 miles and a badly corroded radiator led to rather severe overheating. Gummed-up oil blocked the oil passages in the hydraulic lifters and led to poor cam oiling. In turn, the unregulated fraction between the lifter and the cam lobe had ground two exhaust lobes level with the cam's base circle.
It was a 6 cylinder with two extra along for the ride, barfing exhaust and partially burned fuel from those two into the intake manifold. This was not good for the intake and Rochester 2-Jet carb. It needed some R&R. The first winter I had the car, also my last year in secondary school, I ripped it out and endeavored to make it work as it should without breaking the bank. That's a tough proposition when you only work 8 hours per week. 
That's true but, to follow the slippery slope, BHP/tonne isn't the end-all either. You can have all the power per weight you want but it doesn't mean anything until you can get the traction to put it to the ground. Even if you've got the traction, all that power isn't going to help you when it comes time to turn or slow down. All the power, traction, handling, or braking in the world can't help you if your driving skills aren't up to par. As such, the only allowable boasting thread shall consist of lap times at either the Nürburgring or Le Mans.
