Do graphics really need to be any better than they are right now?

Heres a progression pic of the MGS graphics. MGS1 still looks good even to this day.

Slight flaw: that's either the PC version or a bullshot on the top left. The PS1 game looks considerably worse than that.

I only just got round to playing MGS2 and I have to say I was stunned by the graphics- just shows what you can do with proper coding and utilisation of a console. Can't wait to see MGS4 in action.
You're damn right... there are a few series that always excel in that department (extremely top-end utilization of everything the console has to offer)

• Metal Gear Solid
• Gran Turismo
• Final Fantasy

So, Kojima Productions, Polyphony Digital & Squaresoft... hats off ;)

I'm so glad they are Playstation developers :D

There's still plenty of improvement in graphics yet.

The main thing though which will get ebtter is the visual output. Here's hoping for a 3-D environment projected outwards in our life time!

I think its fair to say in terms of texture detail and modelling detail we have the ability. Lighting and shading is getting there.

Really what needs to get more realistic is animation, particularly physics as ragdolls, funny as they are, don't seem very realistic in most games.

People are far too attached to graphics. Graphical style is far more important than photo realism and gameplay easily comes above anything graphical.

Absolutely correct. ICO will always be one of the best looking games ever, not due to its technical prowess but due to artistic excellence.

Be nice to get frames rate up to a constant 60 frames to what level crysis is and with more depth of view ( draw distance or what ever it called)e.g. no pop ups as for me that one thing that distracts me a lot.

But then we must look at the power of PC rigs that allow that. Should Xbox360 or PS3 have something close to that standard it then Crysis would look even better and run even smoother.

ICO? excuse my ignorance please.

It's a game on the Sony Playstation 2, it was absolutely fantastic and is still one of the most hauntingly beautiful games ever seen on a console. If you have the ability to play PS2 games in some way you should pick it up.

I was thinking of this gen as well as next gen hoping that they get the minimum frame rate up and pop up sorted, the crysis comment was for next gen consoles they should have passed crysis quite easy by then and should have a good frame rate as well.

i remember when the original gran turismo first came out , it blew me aware how good the game looked . recently saw a shot of it on larrys retro corner on sky's game channel and i thought to myself that really doesnt look all that compared to nowadays . i know for a fact that in say 5-6 yrs time i'll be saying same thing about all the games we think look good now . u dont realise how much something can improve until you can look back at it.

Euphoria engine should hopefully take that a step in the right direction. Rag doll was great in it's day, but that day is just about up I reckon.

I agree, I love seeing good graphics, but they don't have to be going down the photo realistic route. I thought Crackdown had great graphics and I loved the way they used cell shading - it just wouldn't have looked right if they tried to make it photo realistic imo. Same can be said with the GTA games.

Don't get me wrong, I know graphics need to improve with time but it definitely shouldn't be emphasised anywhere near as much as it is now. Too many games are crippled by too much thought going into graphics and not other areas.
