New System £2000 to Spend!!!!!!!

if one wants to spend 2k, one should get the best :)

Very true mate ;)

Next question am maybe thinking of adding water cooling to the cpu been looking around at kits and i've found this kit that sounds like it would give good temps on a very high overclock ( Asetek 03-L-5712 WaterChill CPU Power Kit KT03A-L30 Triple 120mm ) does anybody know if i would get close to 4ghz with a Q6600 quad? seen this kit for about £180 or the Alphacool Basis-Set - Eheim 1000/3X+ Watercooling Kit £150.

...

not sure m8, but i would advise the Q6600 over the Q9450 ( £100 difference is not worth it )

you're contradicting yourself now??

i'd get a q6600, decent p35/x38 motherboard and 8gb of decent ddr2 ram and still have loads of change from the 500 you had budgeted for the motherboard and 4gb of ddr 3 alone.

DDR3 is not worth it at this point in time... wait until Nehalem comes out before you bother with it. It saddens me that when peoiple say "I have 2k to spend" that they think they HAVE to spend as much of it as possible. It's pointless. A great high-performance yet not stellar-priced spec would be like this:

The only thing I would add that is missing is a 320GB Samsung F1 HD as a boot drive, they are wickedly fast.

Reasons for no BluRay re-writer is simply because there's no need for one yet... in a few months they'll be considerably cheaper and faster as they become more mainstream. Just make do with a reader for now then upgrade it when they are worth it.

Also why no 9800 series card? Answer: there's no point spending more than £200 for a car ad this point. Nvidias new gen is out in a few months and if you spend wads on a GPU now you'll feel very silly in a short amount of time.

Obviously you can tweak that spen to your liking but it's just a general idea that you don't have to spend everything to get what you need... and it leaves you the funds to upgrade the GPU in a few months for the real next gen. :)

Isn't that always the case?

Good spec but I would get a 9800GX2 and Noctua fans all round for silent running and 8GB ram, as the ram price is so cheap at the moment.

You'd get the most expensive and most pointless GPU upgrade before the GT200 arrives a couple/few months away? And 8GB of RAM even though its completely unecessary and he won't need that until DDR3 is well into its maturity? Interesting choices.

New gpus come out every month. Systems like this buy the best gpu you can.

Ram is so cheap get 8GB now and then you don't have to upgrade at a latter point.

Kind of agree with Richdog TBH.

8Gigs is a little over kill if a gaming machine, and unless you are doing serious video encoding a little bit much at the moment.

I would actually rather get the cheapest GPU at the moment, either a 8800 GT or a GTX (the one on offer currently).

No blu ray writter either, unless the OP feels a need for it. Its all about saving the money, and using that little fund to get a better upgrade in a few months.

If this was back say when the 8800 GTX came out, and the OP spent 350 on a Graphics card, and knew he would have 12 months say of use = win. 2 or 3 months and then something better comes along doesn't seem much of a point to me. Still, Acid is just providing another perspective for the guy to look at things with - which can only be a good thing to help him make his mind up :)

No we're talking about new architecture, something which hasn't happened for about 2 years.. That's completely different.

Of course you have to upgrade at a later point lol... when the new CPU platform comes out, which will be Nehalem in early 2009. 8GB isn't anywhere needed, it's a waste of cash. As I said, by the time 8GB is utilised in any real sense over 4GB, we will be well into mainstream DDR3... and very likely the next version of Windows.

I agree that 8GB at the moment is a bit useless but it won't be i the future. I've made the mistake before of only buying enough cheap ram in the past. Then when I wanted the identical ram 6months down the line it costed twice as much.
It usually is about keeping the costs down but if he wants to spend 2k, but as you say for that price range there's different ways to do it.

It's still the same. If it really is going to be that much better then don't upgrade till then. But you could always be waiting for the next model. You have to accept whatever you buy will be superseded within a month or two.

We are at the dawn of the obselesence of DDR2... there is no point buying 8GB of it... it's not going to be used while he owns this rig. 4GB is more than enough until his next upgrade, which will be in all likelihood be a Nehalem rig.

As far as I know he hasn't said how long this rig is going top last?

It might be 3 years till he does a major overhaul, or it might be 6months.

yes i said id rather have the Q6600 then the Q9450, but if it fits in the budget, and notign else needs to be put in, why not.

when one has 2k to spend and oen wants to spend it, then by all means have some FUN.

he said he has 2k to spend so LET HIM, if he didnt want to he would restrict his budget to something else.
