Drivers attitudes to cyclists

But then you run the risk of injuring or even killing a pedestrian, like you say we cant win. Ride the roads and risk getting killed, ride the paths and risk killing someone else..........

Its a very very small risk ,its something like 2 pedestrians a year get killed by cyclists and they must have been riding like idiots !
If your on the pavement you need to ride slowly if you wanna go fast they go on the road !

If you can manage to kill a pedestrian on a bike you are quite clearly being very irresponsible in going stupidly quick.
There is no way if you are riding sensibly and someone steps out in front of you is anything worse than a few bumps and bruises, maybe some broken bones in a bad case.
But it depends. If your riding at the speed you should be doing on the road on a pavement where pedestrians can suddenly step out into your way you are an idiot.
If for one respect the fact it isn't my right of way and slow down to jogging pace in areas where I'm likely to have people step out into my way.

until cyclists obey the laws of the road, they should be shot on sight!

Cyclists have no one but themselves to blame for the way drivers treat them.

In all my years cycling,

Been knocked off twice by cars.

I have been screamed at by yobs dozens of times.

Had Air horns blown at me by HGVs and horns blown loads of times.

Been pushed from a passenger window.

My mate was side kicked from an open passenger door into a ditch.

My other cyclist mate was shot in the leg - and knocked off his bike with an Air rifle (and the girl - yes GIRL, that did it prosecuted) - Apparently she was having a bad week, and thought she would shoot every cyclist and car she saw that day.

All for no reason by the way. I obey all the highway code laws, and have completed a lot of cycling tests, so use hand signals to manouver properly all the time (and always use lights and helmet)

Ok we all know there some bad cyclist out there as are there bad drivers, no sane cyclist is going to put themselves in harms way deliberately. I would guess that the majority of cyclist involved in accidents are due to driver error. So far ive seen drivers cut me up, overtake too close and even overtake when the road narrows due to traffic islands. I obey all the traffic laws. i dont shoot red lights, i dont ride past cars at lights - i que like the rest (and why shouldnt i). I tend to ride as close to the kerb as i dare but drivers still want to drive as close to me as they can...........

Cyclists are a pain in the ass. They do not undertake any formal training, do not pay road tax and are not required to have insurance. They frequently flout road traffic laws, presumably because they either do not know them or just don't care. They are a hazard on the road.

I do a fair bit of mountain biking and i keep it off road so as not to hold people up.

I hate road cyclists, they seem to be a law onto themselves.

I have two annoyances with Cyclists.

1) Cyclists who cycle along in the middle of the road, meaning I have to wait until the other side of the road is free before I can get round them.

2) Cyclists who dont obey traffic lights and just go through them, or park their bikes in front of me at traffic lights....I can accelerate away much faster than you so get out of the way!!!

They don't pay road tax, they don't obey the rules of the road. Some don't either bother with lights when its dark or wear protective clothing yet they are on the whole smug green types doing there bit.

They do not undertake any formal training,

Shoot, and I thought my cycling proficiency certificate meant that I had. ;)

You don't pay road tax nor do you pay insurance, therefore you have less rights to be on the road!

Nice try but no, not biting on something as blatantly obvious as that. :)

I ride my mountain bike on the road when I have to get between places.

I do find that some drivers are complete *********. The other week I had some old man get really ****** off at me as I moved into the middle of the lane, so that I could prepare to make a right hand turning. He hit his horn and nearly hit me, because the idiot thought it was alright to try and overtake me coming into a blind corner on a busy road!

That said, I have no respect for the following cyclists:

- People who cycle on main roads who don't wear helmets... it stupid and you aren't looking cool by not wearing one, you just look amateur.

- A lot of cyclists in central London who ignore lights or cycle the wrong way down one way streets. I once had a girl shouting at everyone to get out of her way as she was cycling the wrong way down a one way street while it was the pedestrians turn to cross.

NO SWEARING

If you read and know the rules of the road it tells you to to wait on the left of the road till all traffic as passed and not in the middle of the road when turning right.

Shoot, and I thought my cycling proficiency certificate meant that I had. ;)

I passed that when I was 10 years old. When I was 10 years old I had no appreciation of road traffic rules or the highway code. The cycling proficiency test is a pile of non-compulsory crap.

To be allowed to drive any vehicle on the roads, whether it be a car, motorcycle or a bicycle you should have to complete a test to the required standard and be issued with a licence. The rules of the road apply to everyone using them. Why should cyclists be allowed on the road when they don't know the highway code?

I cycle to and from work most days with little to no incident tbh. All it takes is the same ability to see hazards coming and cycle appropriately you would use in a car.

A good road position is key too- too near the middle and other motorists wont be able to pass you and will be quite rightly cross with you, cycle too near the pavement and you are surrendering your road position and making yourself more vulnerable to potholes drains etc.

In fact the only consistent thing that annoys me with motorists is attempting to overtake me on frequently blindbends- you wouldnt do it to another car so why do it to a bike? Hold back for a second, drive round the corner and overtake on the straight?

To be honest I get more peeved off with other cyclists than I do with motorists. Particularly when they jump red lights, cycle through pedestrian crossings and dont signal appropriately. Also people who cycle in front of me at lights (usually beyond the white line as *Im* stopped on the white line as the Highway Code requires) and are then slower off the mark than I am anyway and end up being overtaken?

A rule of thumb that might come in useful for other road users is that a cyclist's intelligence is inversely proportional to the thickness of their tyres. You should also subtract IQ points for lycra and lack of helmets/ lights too :D

Well lets face it the rules of the road aren't rocket science and neither is the highway code. A car a big lump of metal with lots of potential for causing injury or damage, a bicycle is not. I can sort of understand needing a license for one and not the other on those grounds.

That said, I have no tolerance of cyclists because of their insistance on ignoring traffic lights and trying to knock people down at crossings. It's a ****ing red light dumbass!

As a cyclist who uses the road almost every day, I can say for sure that drivers in general have no respect for, or awareness of cyclists.

Twice in the last year I have nearly been brought off my bike at high speed. An idiot in an S Class overtook me and then cut right in front of me to take a left turn, and some idiot businesswoman pulled out in front of me a if she hadn't seen me. The worst thing is that in both cases I made contact with the car and shouted at the drivers but they made no attempt at an apology and simply drove off.

It annoys me as much as motorists when I see cyclists disobeying traffic laws. But I see far more motorists apparently attempting to kill cyclists by overtaking in completely ridiculous places.
