no they have experience fighting arab terrorists in a desert.... and that is about it

We've been doing plenty of that lately in more than one theater and at a much higher level of intensity than anything Israel has seen in the past few years.

Does Israel train in say the jungles of Belize, Brunei, Jamaica, Scottish mountains, arctic circle in Norway, Kenyan grasslands etc....

they're a well equipped conscript army and only really operate in one theatre

as regards the western nations such as britain usa canada australia and new zealand theyre learning the dirty art of guerilla warfare in places like iraq and afghanistan. the ordinary infantry units of theese countrys arent really capable of this type of warfare.e

If you'll read you history you'll find we've got a heck of a lot of experience of this from Oman, the Malayan emergency, aden, northern ireland, bosnia, Kosovo etc.. and have been in iraq for several years now. Pretty much every time the taliban attempts a fire fight they suffer massive casualties - their only effective form of attack is IEDs.

Neutrality did them no harm, it was just reasonable self interest.

And they do have a decent army, principally because virtually every able bodied male in the country is a reservist and reasonably well trained and equipped. Maybe they aren't going to invade anywhere but I doubt anybody would find invading them easy.

Same goes for plenty of european countries, the swedes have a very high tech army with lots of decent kit, maybe they won't look too sharp in the desert but you wouldn't want to try and take them on in Arctic conditions.

I don't think anyone is saying they are rubbish - they have the best/most powerful armed forces in the world - though on a smaller scale (in terms of individual skills) we can certainly achieve more with less/limited resources - US still wins in terms of firepower/equipment at their disposal tbh....

Two recent examples - black watch battle group in Iraq - took over an area south of Baghdad from a US marine corps formation that was basically a brigade sized unit - thats a british unit taking over a role that was carried out by a US formation 3 times the size of it.

Same thing happened in helmand land more recently. I deployed to Iraq a couple of years ago and we'd happily send two vehicles on say a task into basrah - the US would rarely if at all do the same - they'd only really travel in larger groups - send their supplies via huge convoys with air cover and you wouldn't see many US soldiers patrolling streets with floppy hats on - wheareas the british, almost immediately after the invasion started foot patrols wearing berets in order to interact with the locals/appear less aggressive to them.

We certainly do operate in smaller sized units and place a lot more responsibility in the hands of NCOs - whereas you wouldn't find many regular US units deploying anywhere in less than a platoon size group. We also have less special forces units than the US and as a result you'll find that British units can and do get tasked/trained for roles that in the US army would be strictly an SF task.

There are always a lot of stories going around bout this and that etc etc. I have a friend who is a Marine and has been deployed four times, Ill ask him.

These arguements are always fun because its like playing a strategy video game or something. People base their opinion on different things and no one has any realproof of anything.

True enough I guess -

Certain things like how much is spent on an army I guess can be measured... in hindsight I guess the "human" factor can't though.

They would not stand a chance against a mechanized infantry battalion. That goes for all special forces they are not a fighting group but rather used for special tasks.

IMO the US army is the best not because of its soldiers(they are not bad) but the scale of its equipment. Their equipment is good, they have a lot of it and their soldiers can put it to good use.
 
US have the most power, but efficiency would be us. The french are generally quite wild like most european police and army forces just whop out the tear gas at every chance.

We have some renowned forces such as the para's, don't want to bring up a big debate but bloody sunday shows what they are like, just a pity some fool whopped them in the wrong place.
