Whats it like around Manchester?

Ive lived in manchester now for about 7 years.

There are places that are squalid and bad just like ANY big city in the world. Ive seen no crime taking place and ive known of no one in my social circle being mugged/knifed/burgled or otherwise attacked.

If you goto the scummy council estates full of chavs then of course you will think its all a dump, but trust me manchester is like london in the sense that moving from one area to another can be like going from black to white in contrast.

When you move here drop me an email ill be happy to take you round and show you the sights and where to avoid :p

As for night life its just like anywhere else. Stick to the middle of town and dont look for trouble and you will be fine. The student areas are good at night as the atmosphere tends to be more lighthearted. There are nutters everywhere in the uk, manchester is no different but then again ive seen no evidence that it has more than anywhere else.

London seems to be the hotspot for random knife crime at the moment.

Manch is pretty scummy.. from my view anyway :p car got broken into and the CD player stolen after being on a main road for.. er not that long.

Is the A62 (Oldham road) and A664 (rochdale road) bad places as the place I am interested in is like right near this area, found it on Manchester Student Homes.

At the city center end? these roads are both VERY long so you need to narrow it down a bit more.

At the city center end its more rough as you would expect. I would suggest looking at fallowfield or maybe failsworth depending on your finances.

You heard of corporation street?

Corporation st is right near the co-op tower. Its an urban area with carparks and offices and stuff. If you look on google maps you can see a railway nearby. This is a viaduct type and has small business's in the arches underneath. As far as i know the area is free of council houses and its not an area that i can accociate with anything dodgy. Do you have a car? if so it wouldnt be the 1st place id want to keep one at night, mainly due to the closeness to the city centre and so you would draw the drunk idiots on the walk home.

I think i know the student type accomodation you may be refering to, and as i remember its quite new and well presented. If you let me know the postcode i could snap you some pics in the week and mail em to you, i go down that way quite often when i pick the gf up from town.

No I dont have a car, my main transport would be the bicycle and bus really. I'll send the postcode through email. sent it to the zen.co.uk email.

Do it from yer car as you speed past :p

Corporation streeet is pretty much bang in the centre of Manchester, I'll be heading down it in about 10 minutes to go and pick up a load of drunk people, lucky me.

As said before, it depends entirely on which part of Manchester that you live in that will determine how rough it is, just don't move into Longsight or Gorton :D.

Manchester is pretty good for cycling around tbh, plenty of roads with cycle lanes.

Ashton isn't a bad place to stay, decent nightlife between there, Hyde and Stalybridge too.

It's not too far from the centre (It's technically Tameside which might be why you couldn't find it). Though there are some **** holes in between. :p (Gorton, Openshaw, Longsight).

I have been living and working in Manchester city centre for 2 1/2 years now and I love it! Wont be moving anytime soon!

It's got pretty much everything that London has - but on a far more manageable scale. Plenty to see/do/drink

Aaron

Sounds good, hope I make some friends in my class at college who like going out then :p, allthough its an IT course so proberbly not :\.

having checked where the campus is i would say biking is probably your best bet, you dont go through any really dodgy areas, on quite big roads the whole way if you want: Ashton Old Rd and the "Inner Relief Route"
Manchester on the whole is a very friendly place, if you're living in the city centre which corporation st is (is it one of the liberty living ones) then all you'll see is a busy city centre, very little in the way of trouble although you're nearish the printworks which can get a bit messy on fri/sat night

Where you'd be living is right next to the MEN arena and victoria station, and a very short walk from the arndale centre.

Oh and a bus pass is £10 a week or £36 a month for a stagecoach megarider.

I've been in manchester for 5 years now and I dont think it can be beaten really unless you're looking for a quiet place in general, but then you've got plenty of those in the suburbs. I now live in the city centre, just the other side of the station from corporation st and work at the university, I have a nice walk through town to get to work and it's great.
