** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

Seriously impressive! Incredible bandwidth @ 4800. Would be amazing if you could reach 5000! (only 50Mhz 'real' more, and would make it 1400ddr above standard!

Also, people often forget about airflow around gfx cards when they get watercooling, so it just goes to show how good it can be when you set it up properly with airflow running alongside :)

Also, if it does 880 on stock volts, it sounds like you have a VERY good chip to add a titchy bit more :D Shame we can't do the old bios volts (or can we?) or use ati tool anymore for increasing voltage on ati cards :(

Matthew

If I get time later I will try and push the memory. With regard to voltages I'll probably have a crack if it can be done via a Bios mod or Overclocking tool. Not too fussed about pencil/hard mods. At the end of the days its pretty fast at stock.

Very, very impressive card. Its well built and runs very quiet with the stock fan although 80'c idle seems a tad high. I'm getting the feeling this is going to be another 9800 Pro. ATI have done us all proud this time around and all credit to them. One of the best uprgades I have done in a long time.

Sorted the jumping out with 3D Mark 06 and other games. As I suspected it was a Nvidia driver problem.

I'll give it another run now and try upping the memory

Can't believe some of the speeds you guys are getting man. Are you all using the new AMD Clock tool or something else?

Problem I'm having with the AMD clock tool is that OC speeds don't stay for some reason. Once you open up CCC a few times speeds go back to normal.

Could you elaborate, is it something that may affect others? Very good guess btw!

I'm really impressed with how these cards have been overclocking so far, and it can only get better really :D

Memory overclocking on the 4870 is very good but the core is disappointing. 750 is stock? so people hitting max overclock at 800 (7%) is not good and even Asgard at 880 is only a 17% overclock.

Pretty much all G92 chips could do an extra 100Mhz at least and more under water.

Yeah that's true, though are the "super" cards using binned cores, or just different BIOS? As if it's a just a different BIOS then shouldn't those speeds be available to a lot more people overclocking?

Basically there are 2 programs that don't get deleted/uninstalled when you uninstall the Nvidia driver. These 2 programs sit in the startup group. Pretty sure they are called "Nvidia Driver Helper and NVidia Media Center Library". You can disable them by going into the System Configuration/Startup by typing msconfig at the run prompt.

Hope thats clear.

Worked for me.

With regard to the memory 1200 seems to be about the limit. 1220 is possible to bench but I wouldn't like to do it. 1200 seems rock solid like the 880 gpu clock. I'm pretty happy with that.

I don't think bandwidth is an issue with this card anyway running DDR5.

Hopefully bios and not binned cores.

But if bios then it will be giving the core and memory more volts. Don't forget all the super 4870's so far are all watercooled only to cope with the heat.

So I put my money on the voltage change, not just speed binned chips.

I think 800-900 is the max with the stock voltage on the current 4870's. Look at the fact that people are getting 800 core speed with a 4850 with the pencil volt mod and sufficient voltage.

Yup, thanks for the info on the nvidia issue :) (May help others).

Would love you to be able to get at least 900. Hope a soft volt-mod is possible very soon :)

er... thought the Diamond super 4870 will be using the stock cooler, and is not watercooled (it comes with a flame sticker/decal on the cooler however :D Prob will be pretty loud, but means the stock cooler can defo handle the heat :)

I can't believe the stock cooler would handle 900 core. Overclocking via the CCC caused the fan to ramp up and down under load. I would imagine at 900 the fan control would become digital. Either On or OFF.

We have hoped that Diamond will use a non-reference cooling solution, but apparently that just won't be the case. The secret behind the high overclock is the unlocked custom made BIOS which can take this cards clocks high.

Apparently, the reference cooling is doing a good job in cooling the RV770XT GPU but on the other hand, when pushed to do high RPMs, the cooler tends to be "a bit noisy". The sticker design is great but that's just a question of someones taste, some might like it and some might not.

Reference cooling  (it actually has a pick of the completed card).

Matthew

My mistake. I saw the ATI leaked info on the super 4870 stating they were all watercooled and the smooth creations one is.

Never saw the Diamond one. Bit disppointing though to be 800 as stock and the stock cooler.

I bet it gets hot when you overclock it to 950Mhz ;)

Just run the Crysis gpu bench mark. This is with the 4870 at stock

1920x1200 DX10 everything High apart from Post and Shadows on medium. Avg 43 FPS.

For some reason the Crysis Testing Tool won't produce a result. Something about a file missing.

My 9800 GTX at 850/2500 managed 34 FPS avg.

For any Hellgate fans this card is amazing. In DX10 at 1920x1200 with min AA and tweaked settings it was just about playable on my OC 9800 GTX. The 8800GTX was very poor with this game in DX10 and pretty much unplayable. The 4870 on the other hand at stock with everything set to max inc AA its super smooth. Very impressed.

Very pleased with my purchase. Looking forward to the X2 :D
