PSP or DS?

I'm going to buy my first handheld since the Gameboy and need help choosing.

PSP:
+ I have a PS3 so interconnection could be good.
+ It has Pro Evo and FIFA. Always a good thing.
+ I like the Sony brand - but not a fanboy.
+ It can play movies and music.
+ It will work with PlayTV.
+The games seem cheaper.

- More expensive
- Seemingly less games, especially in High St. shops
- Have heard bad things about the analogue stick

DS:
+ Has the Mario and Zelda franchises
+ Has dual screens
+ Cheaper
+ Has massive appeal
+ Brain Training
+ More colour options
+ Advanced Wars

- Need to use a stylus/touch screen for most games
- I feel like I'm following the crowd
- My sister has one - but pink

Anything else that could help make the decision any easier? I'll probably be buying from the purple store as I like buying in the shops rather than online.

I've heard about this custom firmware malarky.

What exactly is it for?
- Emulation (SNES/NES/GBA/Genesis/Megadrive/Dreamcast/N64) - Ok, Dreamcast barely works but the people behind it think they can get some games playable. :D
- Can play downloaded games
- Can convert Playstation 1 games into PSP playable titles (basically emulation again)
- Homebrew apps
- You don't need to use the UMD drive for games which increases battery life and decreases loading times substantially.

That's the main things I use mine for personally, you will however have to get a memory stick (4Gb~£20ish) and a Pandora battery though. (tenner for the latter)

Well worth it.

PSP with custom firmware.

Don't bother with a PSP unless you plan to install custom firmware.

Load of nonsense.

PSP is a fantastic console with tons of great games available very cheaply.

Not payed more than £14 for a game for my psp, and ive got about 20 great games.

PSP can get you sore with extended play, that said, the ds with stylus is not much better.

You can play PS1 games and use remote play via the PS3.

Basically the custom firmware is only useful if you are a filthy pirate.

Both are great handhelds IMO, if you want a PSP prob worth waiting for the PSP 3000 out in October. I would have a go with a PSP first see if you get on with it, I have no problem at all with the analogue stick but certain people cant use it for long periods off time. The DS has more games but I prefer the PSP line up TBH, my DS hasnt been used for months, but my PSP is used weekly even with the lack of games.

Cool, so I could play Golden Axe 2 or Street Fighter on the PSP?

Yep, I was playing Spiderman Maximum Carnage on my PSP earlier. :D

It's just a case of finding the games, you can get massive packs of roms on the net with like 2000 SNES games and stuff.

Personally I think the PSP barely has any decent titles, so whatever.

Yeah great, so I can play PS1 games if I have Wifi near me, that's so useful that, plus can you change to another game when out the house? I think not.

Custom Firmware makes the PSP a much, much better machine.

The PSP games that interest me atm are:

LocoRoco (obviously)
The Warriors
FIFA
Pro Evo
Tiger Woods
Killzone Liberation
Star Wars Battlefront II
GTA VC Stories
Worms Open Warfare

Anything else I should look out for?

When I buy the console I will probably just buy one game with it.

No it dosent make it better, he could play emulators on his DS anyway if that was his thing.

Guess it depends if he wants to support the games industry and buy games, or steal them.

Theres are loads of great games on the PSP, just have a look at IGN and see which games you prefer, but there is as many AAA titles on psp as there is on DS.

Hmm let's see, a PSP without emulation and less battery life, the lack of ability to play any Playstation 1 game without a PS3 to support it through wireless and no ability to use homebrew apps.

Mark, I think I know what is better, don't dismiss it just because you don't like people downloading games.

Call me what you want, I don't really care anyway, I just prefer my PSP with custom firmware as it's used 99% of the time for SNES games.

Edit: By the way, I meant better over a standard firmware PSP, not a DS.

Also I don't see how downloading old Sega and Nintendo games is going to make a difference, do you? They are about £1 in shops if you can actually find them and that's second hand for christs sake.

I dont care if people download games or not Jihad, i just dont like people making stupid statements such as its stupid to buy one without putting a custom firmware on it. You are insulting a lot of people, including me.

It was just my personal reflection, I wouldn't touch one without the intention of custom firmware, I don't think it's worth it.
