major moral dilema....

It's a difficult one, but most will tell you to be straight with him. I wouldn't diss people that are in the situation genuinely, but for someone to stop work to do it deliberately...that's pretty bad.

I was made redundant last year after working continuously for 33 years and I never had a day off since 1988.
There were still people on here calling me a scrounger because I had the embarassment of going to Jobseekers regardless of the fact that it was costing me £1000 a month out of my redundancy to live.
The moral police on here are huge.

Anyway OP, if theres a flaw in the system then go and exploit it.
I don't care that your mate may take money out of my pocket because it will come to a point where the Government will have to re-think.
If you don't want him as a friend because of your wonderful better than anybody elses ethics then you don't deserve him to be honest.

dmpoole: Did you actively try to find work after you'd been made redundant? -EDIT : Yes you did, you posted while I was writing this - I think that's the difference between people who deserve Jobseekers and those who are dole scum. I should imagine you're the former rather than the latter, I think the OP's friend is looking to become that latter.

I have no problems paying NI for people who can't work or are inbetween jobs but are actually trying to get work. But those who would live off us rather than get off their ass and look for a job should be left to their own devices without our money.

thats a bit harsh considering he is only considering jacking in work

who are you, the thought police? :p

No, i dont get off on working my balls off so scum can sit around and live scott free from my efforts.

What he is proposing to do shouldnt even be on the cards as a choice, for any kind of man anyway.

I was led to believe that I would walk into a job working in a Juvenile Prison.
I volunteered to teach IT, Numeracy and IT skills and enrolled at College doing Counselling & Drugs Awareness courses.
The volunteering went on for 4 months and no jobs came up even though it was costing me £1000 a month out of my redundancy and £58 off Jobseekers.
After working in Engineering for 39 years I decided that I wanted a new career and shelf stacking was below me.
I enrolled for another course at the NHS and the day my money stopped at Jobseekers I was offered a fantastic job.
I publically apologise for taking 26 weeks x £58 out of my own money that I put into the state over the 39 years by not taking a crap job.
However since April I have put it all back.

but hes not doing that at the moment so why are you calling him scum?

hopefully the op can talk some sense into his friend though

no , i apologise, you mentioned scum in your last post but origionally you said

Yes, the fact the he is even considering to sponge off the state makes him a waste of space.

Why are you finding it such a difficult view point for me to hold?

At last a reply with some logical reasoning!

You are correct, maybe I am just weak, I should just tell him straight, I dont want the friendship to end but it looks like its going to, afterall, what is a person if they have no ethics.

i would suspect he does have ethics, indeed we all do. They just differ. Get him to be ultra clear on why he wants to do it. Just him saying "coz i cant be bothered" is not the whole story.

I haven't?

What are you hard of thinking or something?

Your suggesting thats what he'll become ..?

I'll probably get abuse thrown at me now, but who cares, I'm actually on the jobseekers allowance, only since September, and it does help a bit, despite it only being £47.95/week. From then I have been to interviews which require me to drive there so it helps pay for petrol and things. And now I'm waiting back to hear if I have the job and if I have then great, if I havent then Ive got something temp lined up. Either way in a week or so Im not going to be on it

Not everyone is "dole scum" who claims JSA!!!

(I actually dont like going to the jobcentre, because most of the time its full of people that are sponging and you'll often overhear the advisor saying to someone "Hows the job hunting going?" and the reply will be some mutter or no or whatever... and then seconds later the advisor stamps a peice of paper and your off. Whereas me, and Im sure a fair few people, are there for legitaminate reasons)

Another thing tho: The jobcentre is actually usesless at finding suitable jobs, all the things I have applied for have been through newspapers and speculative letters/CVs!) So the jobcentre printed 5 job descriptions out, 4 were requiring previous experience and qualifications I didnt have and the other was past the deadline!
