FarCry2 ships with Securom DRM

Of course it will. Im sure no company has ever created a security that means you can only intall 3 times ever.

Everyone who moaned at the beginning of this thread are ignorant.

Well that is what Securom DRM used to entail. Gamers got mad about it (rightfully so) and thus the DRM was changed to allow gamers to reclaim their allowed installs.

I have no quarrel with DRM but I do feel it's my right to install the game as many times as I like! Especially considering how often I rebuild my PC lol.

Some DRM points that will hopefully answer some of your questions and will clarify some misunderstandings about our DRM and SecuROM:

- You have 5 activations on 3 separate PCs.

- Uninstalling the game “refunds” an activation. This process is called “revoke”, so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on 3 systems.

- You can upgrade your computer as many time as you want (using our revoke system)

- Ubisoft is committed to the support of our games, and additional activations can be provided.

- Ubisoft is committed to the long term support of our games: you’ll always be able to play Far Cry 2.

Erm, Bioshock?

No, you could uninstall it and get you 'point' back, they also increased the amount of installs to 5... thats 5 different installs at any one time.

If your copmputer fails you can phone up and im sure they will give you more installs.

People just like to come here to moan because their wow server is down.

See, when it's explained clearly like that, it makes you wonder what the fuss really is about. Good post bee. At least this thread will stop the main FarCry2 thread from being inundated with "OMG DRM" posts :)

So is it definately the case that you get a "token" back after uninstalling with this?

My main problem with DRM is that it means that a certain high street store refuses to take these games in as part exchange :(

YES! I think... ! Certainly seems that way :)

Since when could you part-exchange PC games anyway? The main retailer I usually visit never used to do it where I live... only console games

Sounds quite like what you are doing...
Spore was changed but that is far from the point. It shouldn't have been released with a ridiculous system like that in the first place.

Q: You know what I don't want to do when I install a game?
A: Fanny around waiting on the phone for customer services to see if I'm "allowed" to get an install key.

The fact that the call might be free and the people on the other end not in a generic outsourced call centre, doesn't do much for me. I'd rather just not do it.

As long as you get the install back upon reinstall and you're not treated like criminal for playing the game, it's all good. If not, meh...

Edit: DRM isn't some magical system that benefits us massively, it's just a pain that causes headaches. The main gripe most people have with it is the fact they get penalised for buying the game, whereas someone who pirates it will not experience any of the issues.

I have no problem with this DRM limited install thing at all, seems perfectly fair to me, especially the 'uninstall returns token thingy' explained above. The time I will start ranting is when the DRM stuff that has to be installed alongside the game itself starts interfering with my computer or software unrelated to the game. Until that happens (if it happens) I'll be keeping quiet and hopefully enjoying one of the best games released this year.

Erm, Bioshock? The problem I have with this turd system, and i imagine most other ppl, is that we all know how flaky uninstall programs can be - i.e. even WITHOUT hardware failure, you might not be able to get the "Token" for an install back.

How do these queries sound?
If you lose a motherboard to failure, do you lose a token?
If your HDD dies, do you lose a token?
If you upgrade your CPU and board, do you lose a token?
If you upgrade your graphics card and change vendor, do you lose a token?

Without answers to the above, we're in the dark! With answers to the above, we're still being treated like criminals AND expected to PAY for the privelege!

Which part of NO do these games companies not understand!

I just bought Hells Highway last week, great game - I want to buy FarCry 2.... but im not buying it with this rubbish in place. Simple as that.
They released this tool for Bioshock which gives you your token back. http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/revoketool.html

But patched it anyway later so that you get unlimited installs.

I believe this is what will happen with most if not all games, eventually, which use DRM. Once sales have started to dwindle and the risk of piracy is no longer considered detrimental to initial sales, a patch will be released that eliminates this aspect of DRM from the release completely.

3 installes, 5 installs, doesnt matter - I still feel like im PAYING to be treated like a criminal! :(

Yet for a couple of nighttime torrenting sessions, + crack = free game with no DRM crap.

What I want is games that can be installed, and played with no fuss. This can be done for free, as above, or responsibly buying a game - which is what I *WANT* to do.

Why waste £25-30 to be treated like scum? I'd rather put that in the 4870 fund TBH

I agree with what you are saying, but whats the point in a 4870 fund without any new games to play on it? If we all took that attitude PC gaming would die. I will be buying the game, I KNOW i'm not a criminal, thats all that matters to me.

Sigh. The more DRM-related posts I read, the more I'm convinced that some people use DRM as a scapegoat for justifying piracy.

Introducing DRM -The convenient excuse for torrenting :p

But I do agree that it's not right to be treated like a potential criminal.

No it isnt.

The games should not have the stupidly strict protection on them in the first place, it should not require a few weeks of large scale internet moaning before a patch is released due to gamers "misunderstanding".
There was no misunderstanding, people didn't want to rent a game for full retail prices.

You can guarantee we'll see similar protection again sometime soon.

The stuff we get at the moment that isn't intrusive is the way forward, it's fully acceptable to use the token method, as long as they don't pull a Spore again and try to ONLY give us the initial install tokens.

The chances of someone having 3/5 different hardware/software failures where they can't remove the game correctly are slim to none.
Uninstall and refund is the way forward. Starforce always seemed to be the way backwards.
