Any opinions on o2 broadband?

Hmmm... :(

Wicksta just sorted me out with a Friends & Family deal, but when I called up the woman said I can only get up-to-8mb package... when SamKnows and Be's website both state my exchange (Swindon) is LLU'd with O2/Be... so in theory shouldn't I be on the up-to-20mb package?

I'm guessing that as the order has been progressed (and to be honest, up-to-8mb is better than what I currently have... naff all!) there's no way I could be migrated to the LLU service which I believe I should be able to get??
 
You could well be on LLU but on the up to 8mb package.

What are your current line stats (attenuation/sync speed/SNR)?

Quite probably they suggested up to 8mbit as that is all they reckon your line is capable of.
 
Yup that's it Aekeron. The speed estimates that put you on a particular package (8, 16 or 20mbps) are provided by BT. If it turns out that you're able to get a better speed once the broadband is running then it will be offered to you Confused. :)

Wicksta replied to my email this morning within an hour (maybe the BBC website was taking his time?), and within 2 hours I was fully signed up, so full marks there! :)
 
Signed up to their 16meg deal a few months ago.

Getting terrible down speeds at roughly 3.5 ....up is great tho at 900 ish.

Anyone else having problems with down speeds?

Was with be before, and got around 7-8 with them. So should be getting the same in theory.
 
Yeah, you should be.

Your line seems to be incredibly noisy - have you added any extensions/etc?

Might be worth trying out plugging the router into the test socket to see if that sorts it.
 
exactly the same setup as when i was with be.

I am also also using the test socket.

I haven't added any extensions but the house had a additional sockets already installed when i moved in. Might be down to bad wiring i guess but still doesn't explain why the speeds are slower than when i was with be?
 
It's very odd - especially considering they wouldn't have made changes to your line when you moved over. I presume you were on the same profile with Be? (interleaved, 6.5dB SNR)
 
I'm not too sure what our be profile was tbh.

My housemate set up the new account with o2, as she's paying for it. She didn't realise that you could do a straight switch between the 2 so we ended up disconnecting and reconecting to O2.

This means we may well have a different profile.

I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow i think to try and get it sorted out.

Unfortunately this is not my strongest area so would you be able to give me some sort of idea of what i should be asking them to change/look at?

If you've been disconnected and reconnected then it's likely that the issue is to do with the disconnection/reconnection - whichever engineer did it probably did a shoddy job.

If so, where do you work? Leeds by anychance?

I'm having a bit of a review of my regular telecoms bills (BT, Sky, ISP). Last time I checked my exchange wasnlt LLU-enabled for Be/O2, but now it is. Be website recognises my phone number and offers me products, so here come the 20 questions (well OK, 6). Having checked the first 10 and last 100 posts I'm aware that some of them have been covered to some extent, so please excuse the repeaters.

Can I use my own modem/router (Draytek Vigor 2800VG)?

Can I get static IP? (I know I can use DynDNS and the like but I prefer just knowing the IP address). This will be even more important if I decide to run a server from home (which seems likely).

Be website reckons 8 Mbps, which is what I get now via BT. That's fine with me (though I'd like more of course). However, what sort of upstream speed am I likely to get? (currently getting just over 800kbps, and more would be very useful indeed).

I average about 80GB/month, but that spikes to 150GB/month if there's a space shuttle mission that month or I'm doing server updates. I do try and front-load my bandwidth usage but as I telework that isn't always possible. In any event I get the impression I won't run up against FUP doing that. Is that correct?

I've seen some recent posts about bandwidth being bad in the evenings. Is this true, and if so, how bad?

What's all this about an F&F discount? Is it still available?

Thanks for your patience. As noted above, I telework, so my ISP connection is rather important to me. Significant downtime would be a PITA, to put it mildly.

You'll probably get over 1mbps on one of the standard O2/Be packages if you're getting that sort of upstream with BT, Be also do a package with an upstream of up to 2.5mbps

Currently you'll be fine, and in the foreseeable future as far as I know!

There are a few people who can sort you out a F&F discount on O2 here, it means that you'll get the top package on your line for £7.50 a month without having to have an O2 phone. If you want a static IP then unfortunately it will still be £5 more a month. I suggest comparing packages with Be's prices and see which would suit you the best. If you want an O2 F&F discount then drop me a mail to the address in my trust. :)
