So how is the console war going?

I have both PS3 & X360 premium.

PS3 to me is superior mature hardware and well built but obviously lacks enough VRam for decent AA so you get blur filters and low res upscaled games instead which look poor at times. Bluray is great for movies but now the PC bluray players are so cheap and the PC PQ is superior it loses that advantage as well. At least the PS3 has built in wifi & Hard Drive. However, games wise I think the PS3 is sadly lacking as you can count on 1 hand how many exclusive games it has which are truly worth buying the console for or are superior to the 360 version. Bluray drive is actually hindering most PS3 games at the moment as they have to have mandatory HD installs or mcuh slower loading times from BD as it has to be filled with duplicate or dummy data in order to fill the 50GB up.

360 has more VRam and Xboxlive is very well done. Biggest problem for me is the drive & fan noise are unbearable so hoping that NXE HD copy solves this otherwise unlikely to buy any games for it again. RROD is a big issue still for many due to fatal base design flaws. Most of the time I find that the 360 version of a game looks better graphically than the PS3 as it has more AA and a more natural look about it whereas my PS3 gfx look too shiny and unreal.

Both consoles have issues with vsync & or FPS drops when devs cut corners to save time/money and this should really be stamped out now by stricter quality control from MS/Sony as screen tearing on a large HDTV looks dreadful.

This xmas X360 will spank the PS3 as its so much cheaper so probably 2:1 will be the ratio. Most buyers look for VFM not a £300 black box which can be a total media hub as well.

I know when you spec a 360 premium to include the HD & Wifi its around the same price as a PS3 but MS are smart in knowing that not everyone wants or needs these features so can afford to sell a cheaper model in a time when this means more than anything.

I do not think Sony will ever see PS2 sales figures on the PS3 as the lack of VRam will hurt it more as time goes on. MS will have a 360 successor long before the PS4. If Sony were really clever they would just update the VRam on the PS3 to 1GB + more system Ram slash the price to £200 then it would be a stunning machine with a 10 year shelf life otherwise its in danger of becoming the new Dreamcast by next Xmas!!

That would be a terrible idea, the most obvious of which would be that the systems currently in peoples homes would effectively become useless for gaming as all new games would require the extra ram. On top of that, Sony is already losing money for each unit sold, i doubt they could afford to improve the system specs and drop the price further, their losses would be absolutely massive!

Wii = 35.5M
360 = 22.5M
PS3 = 16.5M

So more or less 50%/30%/20% :)

Is that world wide?

Last I heard, and this was a good while ago, So it could be different now, but 360 wasn't selling in Japan.

And considering the population over there, I would thought it would really hit those stats

360 has started selling a little bit better than it normally does. It's selling more than the PS3 over there.

being a owner of both a 360 and ps3, i feel as if at the moment the xbox is miles in front.

ive always tried to shun the xbox for my ps3.(mainly cos of how much the ps3 cost me at launch and so i wanted to get my moneys worth). however with the recent release of some major xbox only titles. ie fable 2 and gears 2. i seem to be swinging to the xbox at the moment. hell im even tempted to pay for live!

also microsoft seem to be on a major advertising campaign atm, almost every game i see advertised has a xbox advert tagged to the end of it. coupled with the price of the console they look like they will be onto a winner this year.

sony really need to pull there finger out imo.

I heard that MS are selling 360s at a loss over in Japan to try and wrench some of the market out of the Japanese console companies. Any truth to that? Sounds like a good tactic to me, as we all know the Japanese market is a surprisingly large portion of the global market.

iirc the xbox has 512mb of unified ram and the ps3 has 1x 256 mb for its video and another 256mb of some uber fast ram for its cpu?(correct me if im wrong) so you are right in the sense that the xbox has the potential to have more v ram but it could also have the potential to have less.

wouldnt upgrading the vram to 1gb be pointless as the gpu wouldnt be fast enough? equivalent to a 7800gtx?

Thanks for saving me a post ;).

im not sure why you keep insisting this! its bluray, they are all very much like for like. pc's, laptops, ps3, standalones...all of them.

Looking at Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone 2 by footage, its clear 2x256Mb dedicated really isnt that much of a liability in comparison to 512Mb shared anyway.

TBH Id hate not to have both. Enough quality titles on each now imo. Id hate to be missing the likes of Ninja Gaiden 2 right now. (seriously love the Gaiden cant believe Itagaki was fired) Youd also be missing things like Gears, Fable, Halo, Forza, etc. But then there is no way Id want to miss out on MGS, LBP, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Motorstorm, etc. So get both.

Id also get a Wii because Mario Kart is still my most played game by far on any console.

I think everyone is too busy playing games to worry about these things anymore. All three consoles had stand on their own feet now without fanboys arguing over them. :)

I've noticed the fangirls are flaring up considerably less often recently too :)

I still think the Wii is terrible. I know it's fun and everything if you play for all of 15-20 mins it just gets boring and the 'Wii motion' just doesn't work. Have no idea how it became so popular- kids dam it!

My mum shouted at my brother today because he still hasn't bought a Wii

My mum...MY MUM! She watches soaps, and plays Bingo.

COME ON! How can you fight those sorts of evil

For some reason i can't sell my Wii, even my girlfriend now admits it isn't worth keeping for the twice weekly usage of Wii fit she has yet i can't bring myself to get rid of it. I hate the thing, i really do, but i have this glimmer of hope that one day it may come close to the gamecube/n64.

Both the Cell and the RSX can use both sets of memory, but they are slower when accessing the memory not specifically for it.

So basically they both have 512MB RAM they just use it in different ways.

Nanoman is right in saying that the memory in the PS3 isn't really that much of a liability. I still get surprised every now and then at what the consoles achieve in their games with such apparently low memory compared to typical PC gaming (my system has 4x1024mb for example, which is 16 -!- times the amount of random access memory in the PS3).
