Is 21MPG good in America?

Especially at a time like this when everyone is up in arms about fuel prices?
 
25 UK MPG from something the size and weight of the Isle of Man is quite impressive.

Hilux is of a similar class and gets 32MPG afaik from the 3.4L Petrol V6, the fact that Ford decide to use the useless V8 is not my fault.
The L200 gets 29.5MPG, the Navara gets 28-30MPG.


I think the F150 fails.

Edit: I assume that 21MPG figure is for the petrol V8 for the '09 model (rather than the diesel or even the petrol V6 for -'08 ones)

Have you seen the size of an F150 compared to the likes of an L200 or Navara? Comparing them is silly.

The F150 is same size as the Hilux ... and both the L200 and Navara (Frontier in USA) are of similar dimensions (5+m or so)

Even the Toyota Tundra (head to head with the F250) gets 19MPG (US) meaning it performs almost as well as the F150).

The F-150 is getting the newer 3.5L direct injection turbocharged EcoBoost V6 for the 2010 model year (think the Mustang is finally getting it then as well). Would that be an improvement, rypt?

it's a 5.4 liter engine with 320HP and 390 lb ft of torque....so in that perspective its not "too" bad.

but I don't think 21mpg is anything to brag about anywhere in the world...

and similar power figures could be made more efficiently by using a turbo diesel.....or turbo smaller petrol engine

i think the L200 and navara are more Ranger sized.

I drove an 2007 F150 V8 and the fuel economy was teriable, less than 10mpg from memory. I had a V6 Frontier on a pervious trip and it was pretty good (over 20mpg)

30mpg US or 30mpg Imperial? 'cause 30mpg US is a hair over 36mpg Imperial.

Actually, it'd probably still get that if you drove sensibly. The standard Duratec 35 complies with the ULEV-II emissions rating, and doesn't have direct injection. Even with the turbos, I'd hazard a guess that the EcoBoost can be gentle on fuel when it needs to be. And it should also comply with ULEV-II.
 
I was getting about 30MPG average in the car I hired in the States back in July, and it had a 3.8L V6. Not bad really :)
 
oh and as regards to size, I have driven both the F150 (several models) and drove a nissan frontier almost daily for about 2 years and the frontier is a smaller truck in comparison.

US diesel regulations are much, much tighter than the UK or the EU (they recognise that diesel is actually worse than petrol in most metrics), and the emission control equipment means substanstial power/torque loss for diesel engines.

Petrol turbo engines tend to not to perform well in the low rev range, so aren't really suitable for a pickup.
