Grand Theft Auto 4

GTAIV R* benched my Quad @ 3.7GHz, gfx max everything except ‘textures’ set to medium, and view distance was adjusted accordingly to stay within gfx card memory limitations. At the following res results are as follows:

-1024x768 = 59.89fps
-1280x1024 = 56.28fps
-1440x900 = 54.67fps
-1600x1200 = 46.47fps
-1680x1050 = 46.38fps
-1920x1200 = 40.16fps
-1920x1440 = 35.89fps

Obviously knocking about 7fps off each result for in-game; since R* benchmark is not the most testing compared to some heavy in-game action, which fraps shows all too well. In-game fps I find it runs fine up-to 1680x1050 or 1600x1200, and never dips below 34fps (via fraps), any higher res the game suffers as in-game action heats up.

That’s very surprising, when compared to what I’ve read about equal spec pc's to yours running GTAIV at simular very high res. Still, if true then good for you. :)

What are you doing to get such good FPS? I run at much lower settings than you and I have a better system, and I get around 15-20 FPS if I'm lucky

Its annoying me that I can't play in 1920*1200, is there anything I can do to get to this res? Its running at 1680*1050 at the mo and won't let me go higher, its only showing as 512mb of V-RAM, is there anyway to get it to use/see all 1gb of the RAM on my X2 card?

Just put the new Nvidia Drivers on, btw.

Cheers

Dave

It doesn't really have 1GB of VRAM, they just double the number on GX2 cards to make it seem better.

Youre both basically saying the same thing. Let's agree that it physically has 1GB VRAM but the game only sees 512mb as that is duplicated over both the cards so they can process in tandem.

Am I right in thinking the new 180.87 drivers are only for the GTX2xx series?

No he has the better system, his cpu is far higher clocked than yours and he has a heavy overclock on his card which prolly makes it as fast as a GTX ( remember he's got the G92 chip not the G80).

But anyways, 20 fps is too low, I get higher fps on a q6600 @ stock.
Are you patched up and have good drivers ? And turned anything in the background off that uses any noticable cpu power ?

Its does and it doesn't so to speak, its just 2 512mb cards stuck together however I was asking if there was a way to use all of the RAM rather than just 512mb of it.

Cheers Keyser Soze, will give that a try when I get home.

I have a lower spec than you and get far better fps than that. You are either running at a very high res with high settings, or there is something wrong.

oh yeah, fair enough his might be a bit better.

I don't think i have anything on in the backgriund, just windows sidebar and my AV program.

I will have to hope there is a patch in the future to give some SLI support for this game. It seems like the main restriction with the game is VRAM, doesn't seem interested wether its an older card with lots of RAM or a faster newer card with less ram. GPU doesn't seem to matter from a graphics settings point of view.

Do you own a Ati card as they dont seem to get on with GTAIV, if not then are you using the latest Nvidia 180.84 drivers? I've not plucked the fps results out of thin air and assure you they are genuine...

Yeah I believe you there real results.

I think ** system is actually better than mine, I have an 8800gtx

I'm running at 1400x900, even though my native res is 1680x1050

What in-game settings are you using and what do you get in the benchmark?

I run at 1280x1024 which is less pixels than 1400x900 and get 45fps in the benchmark (both CPU and GPU at stock) and in-game is usually at least 30fps and can be 50-60fps during the day.

at 1400x900 i get an average fps of 17

No problem gfx card wise then. :) I dont know your pc specs, if simular then i would guess something driver related is amiss...

Younger brothers pc very simular to my own; only diff been Q6600 3.4Ghz, heavy clocked 8800GTS 640 and it still manages fps very close to mine, even with + 15% higher draw distance than my set up. His been playing the game @ 1680x1050 via Samsung T200 20" monitor purchased for Xmas, to replace his trusty old 17" IIyama E431S. :)
