Darkfall - Jan 22nd (maybe...)

As far as I'm aware there is already punishments for crime in Darkfall. Just as in UO though you will still get "reds". In fact Darkfall has gone one better (imo) than UO in that you can only have 1 character on a server, so your reputation and name go with you, rather than on UO where someone could seem nice to you and then a few minutes later log onto their red and slaughter you and then hop back onto their blue to get things done.

Those were the days, I remember experiencing that rush as both PK and PKed. I started off as part of a PK guild. We had a bridge we would hide on, two or three on each end, so when someone came running across they would get stuck between us and quickly dispatched :D Guild politics and a leader with a power complex forced me to hang up my reagents bag and retire to the mountains to become a solitary ore miner. Returning home one day, my pack full of gold, I had a bit of difficulty getting into my house. I realised too late that my guild had tracked me down, broken in and were lying in wait. I only just managed to barge my way out and run for the safety of town. After that I pretty much went feral, learnt archery and lived in the wild hunting game (and the odd player). Maybe its just nostalgia but theres few games that I have enjoyed as much as UO. If Darkfall can capture any of the old magic I'll definitely be giving it a go.

Indeed, its ironic that 12 years on I can remember the names of the PKs I encountered more than I can remember the names of nicer people I met in MMOs. Names like Ben Boltthrower and ROMEO and his pk gang, Stan the Man who used to seemingly specialise in stealing peoples houses, Molson Canadian and BLACKDRAGON. I have never felt the adrenalin and exhilaration in a game since then like I did the day some mates and I managed to escape ROMEOs gang. Ending by leaving them on the shore as we *wave* at them whilst sailing away on our ship :D

I stole someones ship once and sailed it along the coast with him running along the shore cursing me. I eventually gave it back after I'd had my fun. :D

Anyway, enough of the UO reminiscing as I could go on all night. Apparently more digital copies of Darkfall are going on sale this evening and judging by the load on their forums it would seem that a lot of people want to try this game.

I think its going to be a ****-up again tonight, can see the accounts section dying almost instantly. Installing EQ as i type as im getting a bit fed up of the way Darkfall is going, have Judo tonight and there is no way im going to sit at home pressing F5 for the chance to play.

Anyone have the pricing information for this by the way?

I worked it out as £44 but i checked my balance the other day and I'm surprised to see it cost

Darkfallonline.Com MAROUSI. 39.47EUR at 1.121. £35.20

I don't know if they will charge me the VAT at a seperate date but I'm please to see it cost me much less than I expected.

If anyone is interested in buying Darkfall they're opening up the accounts page at around 7pm every night this week.

I think I'm going to wait a while and see how it fares, I don't feel like forking out £35 for what appears to be a beta test. Or maybe its more polished than I give it credit for?

Many parts are surprising stable, what tends to be missing is is wildlife and mobs, the world can feel pretty empty. The GUI can be somewhat clumsy to use but not game breaking (imo).

The client stability and server stability are what is surprising considering everyone was expecting to pay for a beta experience.

The biggest challenges are surviving the opening stages of the game as the most obvious (and only spawn I found so far :p) seems to be the Goblins. You are fighting over them with other players, whom you have to be careful not to hit (lest you go grey).... should you go grey you better pray no one notices ;) If you hit someone just once it only lasts about 10 seconds... hit someone a 2nd time and that bounces up to 2min cool down.

I mean it sounds really interesting I would like to take off into the wilderness and perhaps find a spawn no one knows about miles away from starter spots - that feasible?

What's the server capacity? If there is only one server then this sounds more like a stress test than a proper release. So much for hundreds of thousands of people playing, servers are usually only around 10k max

OMG it actually lives??!?

Did the open beta phase just get skipped in the end?

Aye their wasn't any open Beta, I've posted screenies in the screenshot thread a page or two back. It's an awesome experience to be blunt as you don't have any pressure to have awesome equipment and continue leveling.

You can change professions, career and consequences are dire (I went -18 alignment and it took ages to get back to neutral, never again!)

Graphics are much better in game. Shadows are a killer though!

Please don't tell me your currently alt+tabbed from a stable client of Darkfall Online, because I will come round your house and shove Smartprice sausages in your eye for lying to me.

I'm alt tabbing, how do you think I'm posting :o.

Limiting the amount of people getting the client for launch, trusting in the long-term attraction of their game and not trying to make as much cash as possible, was a very good move. I'm looking forward to playing this in a couple of months.

Lol that's not the case at all. They are simply unprepared and don't have a clue what they are doing, its nothing to do with trusting in the long term of the game.

Darkfall = MMO fail of the year IMO.

Doesn't help it's their first time launching an MMO, getting 10k people on a server and spending 7 years on a low income to develop a game that's appealing to a minority of MMO players is probably nerve wrecking.

I'm simply glad I got in but I don't think they really expected as many to want Darkfall.

I reckon once they reach the cap on one server then opening to flood gates on another will be easier, they need to learn.

I'm still curious about the game, 90% of my old UO friends who have got in are really enjoying it and saying its bringing back a lot of similar UO feelings for them. Thats certainly enough to keep me curious
