Double post i know but meh
Finally did it! The final level was easily the hardest moment i have ever experienced in any FPS i've ever played. While i did get angry at points i've shouted less profanities during this than i anticipated, despite being rock solid it wasn't actually that frustrating. Or at least, not as frustrating as it should have been considering i died at least 20 times on the final level. What a fantastic game though, i really enjoyed it even on the second playthrough. Oh and gotta laugh, the last helghast i killed before the final boss gave me the 1500 kills trophy, honest to god!
Couple of tips for those going for elite, it's not that bad until the final level but there are a couple of moments that made me work to stay alive, i'll stick em in green cos they're spoilers:
Visari Square:
This made me die several times, but if you get it right it's over incredibly quickly, it's just a matter of surviving the first and last waves long enough to do considerable damage to the enemies numbers. In the first wave take the left mounted gun, don't zoom in as that slows your aiming down way too much, just try and aim as best as possible without a crosshair. First take out the 2/3 runners that come from your left, do this asap, then quickly swing to the right as by then whoever manned the middle gun will have fallen, take out the helghast climbing over the wall and then swing back to the middle and finish off those you can.
Final wave is all about getting rid of one of the heavies as quickly as possible, i'll let you use your imagination to figure it out.
The Train:
All fairly easy, until you reach the tank. This imo is the third hardest part of the game. To beat it you have to know how the mechanics work in this section. Many will tell you to run back to the tank and use the mounted guns. Ignore them, it does have a chance of working but it's mainly luck based. 6 runners spawn every time you kill them, so that means you need to take out the tank asap or else you'll be overrun. The first 6 runners and a couple of normal higs will be stood quite close to where you enter the area. Run in and then move so you have the crate with the rack of guns between you and the enemy to keep you covered. Keep sprinting and when you're about to reach the rack prime a grenade, pop out to the right of the crate and throw it, by now the 6 runners will be near to you and this SHOULD take out most of them. Instantly prime a second grenade and throw it in the same place to finish off those that survived the first.
Now, grab the rocket launcher and quickly fire three rounds into the tank, if you're quick enough the 6 reinforcement runners won't have reached you by the time you kill the tank. Pick up your machine gun again and have a good old fashioned showdown with them, with the tank out of the picture you shouldn't have too many problems.
The bucket conveyor after you get the electricity gun:
This bit is just frustrating as there's little/no cover from enemy fire. First, before you get in the bucket, equip your pistol and snipe the dude in the control room, you should just about see him if you jump on one of the pipes, every little helps eh? Now, get in the bucket, but DON'T crouch, remember there is no cover here and the electricity gun can sometimes have trouble finding targets over the lip of the bucket, by standing you overcome this problem. Now, strafe left and right as quickly as you can just frying all the higs you can. Try not to exhaust the electricity gun completely as that takes ages to reload, just reload when you feel you have time.
The palace square:
Probably the most annoying part of the game due to the COD style respawning enemies. Trick is to kill, move forward and secure areas as quickly as possible, thus disabling the spawn points as you go. Eventually you'll find a tunnel under the central platform, go in here and clear it out of any stragglers. Go forwards (simply doing this disables 3 spawn points, friendly AI will mop up those that have already spawned), then up the stairs, stop just before the top and kill anyone in your direct path. Now get up and run out of the stairs forwards until the ATAC appears now RUN BACK!!1 (FAST!). Let your health regen (it will likely be low), then go back up to the opening of the stairs and snipe the ATAC with whatever gun you have handy. After it's gone yet again wipe out those in your path and then run forwards and through the right archway and hide behind the big stairs. This disables another 2 spawn points. Wait for the AI to mop up the enemies then go back and revive buddies as needed. Now, all you can do here is push forward carefully, there's only one spawn left and you only need to get close to it to disable it. Once you can tell the enemies are dying down, wait for an opening and sprint to the door, this then starts a cutscene.
Visari Palace
Urgh... what can i say? If you've done this on Vet you already know its a challenge. Luck is the key here more than anything. Learn the enemies patterns too.
First wave: Simply mow them down as they come around the statue. When the doors behind you open pull back to the pillars by the entrance and kill the flamers/runners that jump down. This bit isn't too hard, if you've made it this far you'll be fine.
Second wave (the balcony of doom): You may be surprised to hear this but, your best weapon to stay alive in this section is the knife. It obviously doesn't need reloading and it provides the quickest kill possible, very important when you're fighting such huge numbers rushing you. Rico is important here too, not because he'll do much damage but because he'll slow down enemies on one side, thus giving you more time. Use the standard rifle to take potshots at the enemy below until radec sends Higs up to get you. Run to one side with the knife equipped and kill whoever you can, then sprint to the other side and take out them too. Once that's done revive Rico ASAP. You'll need to do this twice. Once the runners are gone, the rockets will appear, this is actually much easier than the runners, simply grab a sniper rifle and run to the left stairs (left when you're facing radec) and camp by the furniture barricade. Slowly move out and take out the rocket troopers one at a time, take your time, if you mess up you have to do the runners bit again.
Then, the cutscene of a ISA carrier crashing. Simply camp in the same place, keep rico alive so he can whittle away the enemies health and knife anyone stupid to come and get you. Once they're all dead use your sniper rifle again to get rid of the remaining rocket men.
Fight radec just like you would in any other difficulty, he has a bit more health and does a bit more damage, but trust me, if you've got this far he'll be a cake walk.
