My Golf - Update thread

Aye, £2.37 is a bargain

Where is your build thread Firestar? I wanted to see that custom IC build ;)

Got most of the bits, took the front end off the car, took most of the stock IC setup out only to find i need a longer pipe, going to wait till some better weather till i go through all that messing around again.

Anyway.......

Time to bring this thread back on track.

A common and effective mod with 8v owners is to replace the bottom end with a 2.0 bottom end from the 8v MK3 GTI, combined with some headwork on the Mk2 head you can net around 145bhp with a nice gob of torque to match. So I was having a browse on god old ebay, and I just picked up a complete Mk3 2.0 engine for the princely sum of........

..........£2.37p :D :D

Plan is to throw it on an engine stand at the back of the garage and build it up bit by bit when I get spare time/money. I'll get hold of another Mk2 8v PB head so I can build the 2.0 up without having to take my car off the road. Tempted to throw bike carbs on it too......

Bargain!

I have a complete 8V GTi engine here, I have no use for it. You're welcome to any bits you need if you come pick them up/cover the postage.

Email/MSN jonesol1[at]hotmail.com, I'm going to be away all weekend but I'll be back Monday.

There won't be a 20vt conversion, that would go against my fun on a budget ethos with this car.

Awesome, thanks buddy, I'll definately take the head :)

I'll be in touch

Project 'sillyteg'
OK, I thought I might as well get this thread kicked off, I'll probably be going over some stuff I have already covered in other threads, but I thought it would be better to start from the beginning.

Unfortunately on the way home from picking the car up the cambelt failed, bending all exhaust valves and 4 intake valves. One head rebuild later the car was running again, but not to it's full potential, so I decided to buy some decent engine management, namely a Hondata S300:

In the mean time I also fitted a Megan Racing H-Brace, and a Whiteline ajustible rear ARB, and also some Spoon style mirrors.

Then came the time to get the cams dialled in and the S300 mapped, I decided on Performance Autoworks to do the tuning as they have a great reputation, I haven't heared a single bad word said about them.

So I dropped into them for mapping, the next day I got a call saying that it's not going well, the car isn't making any power on VTEC. Long story short, it turns out that it's just a big mismatch of parts, the Toda cams were never going to work with the lower compression of the B20B bottom end, and the inlet manifold isn't ideal for N/A applications either.

I could have just tried some standard cams etc, but I deciced to take the opportunity to improve it again. I was all settled on some custom cams, headwork and custom inlet manifold from Perrymoo, but after some research I started to think about going down the forced induction route. I finally settled on a plan, I would turbo it on the stock internals at a low boost, and over the following months get together low comp pistons, rods etc and rebuild it over the winter for some real boost.

I then found a bottom end for sale that has already been built for boost, at a price I would be mad to pass up. So that's where I am at the moment, over the next couple of weeks I'll be ordering the parts for the turbo and picking up the built bottom end, then putting it all together :D

The spec of the engine will be:

- Built B18C6
- 9:1 Arias Pistons
- Eagle Con Rods
- ARP rod bolts
- Darton Sleeve Kit (84mm bore)
- Cometic Head Gasket
- ARP Head Studs
- Skunk2 Turbo 2 cams
- Toda valve springs & retainers
- Full port and polish
- V-spec polished Inlet manifold
- Spoon 70mm throttle body
- Turbonetics/Garrett T3/T04E 50t .63 A/R hybrid turbo
- Egay cast manifold
- Egay downpipe
- Egay intercooler kit
- Tial 38mm Wastegate
- RC 550cc injectors
- Sard fuel regulator
- Uprated Fuel pump
- Mugen low temp Thermostat
- Mugen fan switch
- Samco hoses
- Fwin deep core alloy radiator

That lot should be good for 400+, but I'll be shooting for 300-350whp to keep it reliable. Should be interesting ;)

I went to the cinema last night, and for whatever reason I decided to take the 'teg, just though I'd give it a run. It was running flawlessly, got to the cinema without any issues, parked up and noticed a little wisp of smoke come from under the bonnet.

I popped the bonnet, and the smoke was coming from around the manifold/turbo/downpipe area. Then before my eyes said area burst into flames

So I got my fire extinguisher out of the car, pulled the safety tab, and the top of it fell apart in my hands , I then ran into a nearby restaurant and grabbed a fire extinguisher, came back to the car and the fire had all but put itself out, I extinguished the small flame that was still burning. Thankfully there is no damage whatsoever, aside from the downpipe/dumptube heatwrap being a little scorched.

The only explantation I can think of is the turbo feed was weeping oil again, it soaked into the heatwrap, then when I stopped the heat built up and ignited the oil.

20VT...5 months and counting :D

You KNOW you want to ;)

I like this golf you have, also liking the integra, and I believe you once had an RX7 which was very nice aswell ?

Yes I did. Been there and done that with the jap turbo-nutter stuff though :)

 Getting old, Ben? :p

Nice mod though. It doesn't matter how much power you have, most cheap and simple suspension tweaks will get the best out of a car. I don't know of any ARB upgrades for my car, but polybushing the existing ARB mounts made a significant difference to how the car felt.

Not really any less roll (due to the crappy G-Max suspension) but just more precise on turn in.

Another little update, fitted an ebay-tastic strut brace:

strutbrace2.jpg

Aside from looking shiney, it has made a noticeable difference to the feel of the front end, it just feels more 'precise' and 'direct'

It's amazing what a difference these small chassis mods have made to the car, it's totally transformed from when I first got it

Finally picked up the engine. I didn't actually get the £2.37 bargain engine in the end. The guy never responded to any of my emails to arrange pick-up, I think he must have decided he didn't want to let it go for so cheap

Still, no matter. I found another engine, it was a wallet busting £40 :D

It actually works out cheaper that the other one due to the fact that it was closer to me so didn't cost a lot in fuel. Also, being an earlier MK3 engine it's an easier swap, I could literally just swap the bottom end with mine and throw it in the car. I'm not going to do that though, plan is to get another MK2 8v head (so I don't have to take my car off the road) and get it ported, and possibly fit larger valves and a fruitier cam. All on the cheap of course ;)

I won't be doing that overnight either, it'll just sit at the back of my garage and get done gradually as and when I have the spare cash/time.

Anyway, here's a quick piccy:
