***The Official Phenom II Overclocking Thread***

edit: I've just seen that your *actual* cpu vid is 1.025, that seems wayyy too low, should be around 1.325/1.35 and would explain why things are unstable. To be honest if thats the actual voltage its pretty impressive it managed to boot lol, should be quite a good clocker if thats the case

Thats AMD cool n' quiet in action, the actual clock speed is a mear 800Mhz while at that voltage:)

Thanks for the other advise though, il have a go at upping the NB voltage.

just to update, problem seems to have been running in 'Ganged' mode, everything seems nicely stable when running unganged.
I suppose the stress of running 4 DIMMs was just 2 much to run Ganged

unganged basicly is dual 64bit, Ganged mode is a single 128bit..

i had problems with Ganged too even with 2 DIMM's .

tbh Ganged mode is only alittle better in single threading apps.. where unganged mode is alitrtle better in multithreading apps.

Got my 2nd build setup this weekend. Running at 3.2ghz on stock voltages at the moment. Can go higher but I think I'll try that in a few weeks.

Phenom II X3 720 BE
Xigmatek HDT S1283
Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
Cosair 4GB DDR3 1333MHz
WD Raptor + Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB

Only problem is that under auto settings for the memory it only runs at 1066MHz instead of 1333MHz. I have the latest bios. Dont think this memory is full supported yet?

TW3X4G1333C9DHX are the ones I've got.

can't u manuely set it?

it's the same with a ddr2 1066 setup it doesn't go to the full 1066 on auto..

ok a little update here; i've been fiddling with amd overdrive a bit more and strangely enough ive managed to get the chip at 3.4 ghz 100% stable at stock volts, previously i needed to raise it to 1.375. It passes prime and reports no errors, however if i set the same settings as reported in overdrive into the BIOS then windows will not even boot. Fiddling with overdrive even more i found that the chip is quite happy to sit there at 3.7 in windows at 1.4 volts as well but i cant even boot if the same settings are in the BIOS.

Is this something to be concerned about in terms of my MB? or is this a common sort of occurence? im gonna clear the CMOS a bit later on and start from scratch, as the BIOS is the most up to date version there is atm

This overclocking m'larky has me miffed.

Does this look ok?

overclocking via overdrive should only be used as a setting test. it may seem stable but if the same settings u put in the bios fail then it's not 100% stable.

Yeah I've done that now it works. Running at 1333Mhz Thanks. The Gigabyte bios gave the SPD info of the memory and I just manually matched that.

Any good windows based memory testing software out there?

Seems 3.4 is the limit for me. No matter what I try now I blue screen but I'm not 100% sure of what I'm doing to be honest.

Had another fiddle last night. Managed 3.6GHz stable on 1.50 volts with 18x multiplier. 25C idle and 38C under load.

I notice some people have managed 3.6GHz on stock volts, is that down to the quality of the motherboard or something else?

3.6 is pretty good for a 720, nice one :)

For a given method of cooling, speed at stock volts and max over clock are mostly down to the quality of the cpu. Maybe quality is the wrong word, very few chips are perfect, this applies to all manufacturers.

I am a newbie to over clocking business. I put a 940BE Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe (BIOS 1701), over clocking at 3300 MHz, man I can’t believe I am getting this sort of speed out my OLD board, and it’s rock solid stable, incredible. What board would you Guys recommend, I have had to rule out the Asus M3A78-T because the lack of PCI Express x 1 Slots. I thinking of Gigabyte’s GA-MA790FX-UD5P.

Case: Cooler Master C90, Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe (BIOS 1701), AMD Phenom II X4 940BE at 3300 MHz, CPU Cooler: AKASA AK-920-2 EVO 120 COOLER (REV 2), Corsair XMS2 (2G x 2, DDR2-1066), Sapphire ATI HD 4850 516MB, Jeantech Storm 700w SLI/Crossfire, Samsung DVD-RW, NEC DVD-RW, 2 WD 160GB Monitor: CRT Dell D1626HT, Hitachi 300Gb, Hitachi 400Gb, Maxtor 300Gb, Maxtor 300Gb, Samsung 500Gb, Sound Card: Creative SB Audigy 2 Platinum, TV Card:Pinnacle PCTV 3010iX Dual Analog + DVB-T, Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium 32 Bit.

Wow, you put a PII in an M2N Sli Deluxe, I have that board with the good old nvidia 570 chipset. The PII's aren't officially supported by the board, have you noticed any issues with it?
