At the time he signed for Spurs, Gomes was going though abysmal form and everyone thought that Cudicini would walk in to the number 1 shirt and stay there, but Gomes form has drastically improved and I think deserves to stay number 1 at the moment.

I'm not sure at what point he was going to oust Buffon from the Italian team though

Why would he oust Buffon from the Italian team :confused:, when Robert Green gets picked for the England squad David James doesn't get dropped, most national teams have 3 goalkeepers called up to the squad not just 1.

Lost in translation then I guess. For me the Italian Team means the First Eleven not the squad.

And if he was still playing first team football then he could easily have been brought into the first eleven for friendlies, much like England's squad keepers are. You're not really getting me mate, my original post is about his wasted career as an understudy when he could have been so much more, would you be happy to be a no 2 for whats meant to be your golden years? :cool:
 
Will be interesting to see who Ipswich are linked with now Keane is manager. I assume he'll have a decent amount of money to spend too... probably something in the region of £10m-£20m.

Like i said mate, we both have different meanings of first team, that's all.

When you change clubs you take a chance on going somewhere where you think the grass will be greener and you'll be happier. At the time when he moves, Gomes was in awful form, PSV had even put a bid back in for him, so anyone would have thought he'd have been first choice keeper. It didn't work out, so if hew wants to move he now has to wait for the transfer window.

The same can be said of David Bentley. When he left Blackburn, Spurs were in Europe, won the Carling Cup and the sky was the limit. They had huge set backs in the early part of the season and now he can't even get into the squad.

Anyway enough off topic chat

Absolute nightmare for Villa with Laursen possibly retiring. Richards and Lescott would fit in perfectly with Villa, with all the other English players

Very sad news.

His first season was almost wiped out by injuries, but he gradually came to play a more prominent role until last season he was just immense and a crucial part of our side. Best all-round defender we've had since McGrath, and scored goals too.

Fully deserved his elevation to club captain this season, and performed well in that role. For half the season he was a rock again. It's no coincidence that we've fallen away from the heights of earlier in the season without him.

Great player and a nice bloke too from what I've heard. I only wish we could have seen more of him... :(

Edit: And we didn't let Mellberg go. He left on a Bosman because he'd received an offer from Juventus. Nothing the club could have done to keep him.

Great players don't go bad over night. Watch him for Argentina and he's phenomenal.
 
We need to seriously keep Tevez, he's good enough, he's still young and will get much, much better over the next 4 years. **** Berbatoss off and keep Tevez.

I'll carry Berbtov to whatever team is dumb enough to buy him.

Sell Berbatov to Real Madrid for £25m, buy Tevez for £22m. Job done.

really? i am led to believe his form for argentina has been sub-standard for some time now. i actually rate him but don't think you can use his argentina form to demonstrate that.
 
One interesting thing I read about Tevez was him saying he was expecting to go back to boca juniors in 4 or 5 years.
So the transfer fee of around 20-30m would be essentially for one contract, seeing him leave before he was 30.
("'I will sign my last contract, and then I'll go back to Boca Juniors in four or five years.'")
With this in mind, it would be difficult to justify the price if he was performing at a level of a Torres or an Eto.
Which he isn't.
Now people will be happy to make excuses for him because of his work rate and the fact that he was indeed harshly treated by SAF.
But he has not helped himself either, with constant talking to the press about leaving and by playing below his best when called upon.
Regardless, for me he simply doesn't represent value for money.
We payed over the odds for Berba, fans shouldn't be so eager to see us throw money away again.
