heh cheers :D I like yours but perhaps make the dot in the middle of the c more subtle? (maybe change dot colour to red, or maybe make it bigger), because IMO it almost makes it look not like a 'c' at all and more like a bullet point or an icon of some sort. Also yeah if you matched the thickness of the O to the UK or made the UK thinnerto match the O I reckon yeah you'll see a big improvement. :)

You make a good point about making the designs work on different coloured backgrounds. I've been focusing on black and white, assuming that if it looks good on black it should look ok on the dark blue forums too. So while some of the designs I've seen here look really nice, some might not work on dark backgrounds unless the colours are inverted, but with a little tweaking after changing black text to white I'm sure it can easily be done (or be cunning and use solid colour fills, like what you've done ;)).

One more thing I noticed, perhaps try to keep the spacing gaps between letters the same too (particularly between the 'c' and the 'U', unless you're going for a deliberate separation effect.

Just having a wee bit of fun mess around in photoshop now heh:

I think this one would work better if you made the underline union flag match the border union flag, as it is it just looks a bit "off" with the underline being to a smaller scale.

Really?!

Oh, I disagree with that - Fine Artists are at the apogee of guff :D

From my - possibly biased ;) - experiences and observations, graphic designers are in a difficult position. On the one hand, there is a constant need to justify their solutions due to damn near everyone thinking "I can do that - it's just drawing and font selection". On the other there is the strong compulsion from big/high-paying clients to justify the expense, hence multipage presentations full of guff; see the recent Pepsi brand redesign by the Arnell Group for a particularly astonishing example.

Skippi - I'm afraid to say that unless you're incredibly fortunate, you will have the love for design knocked out of you. It's a bit of a no-win situation: if you've done good design work, it doesn't get noticed [because it's not meant to; good design is transparent], but if you do something bad, people from all walks of life will queue up to tell you just how bad it is.

The trouble with design is that too many people think it's a profession of creative expression, when it isn't; it's about solving problems and communicating. That's it.

Agreed I feel that a lot of the problem comes from university degrees though. Throughout my degree we were pushed to come up with crazy ideas and step away from the mac for final solutions etc. Now, this is all well and good for coming up with ideas but it teaches you literally sweet FA about how the real design world is.

99% of clients don't care about what you do. It's that simple, they don't care that you spent 4 hours sorting out kerning/leading/image placement/colour choice. They want it done, they want it quickly and they want it to look 'nice'. Every bit of work I did was mac based with a ridiculously short deadline and completely censored by the client to the point that you hate what you've done anyway. It's extremely rare that you will get a great brief with a great client that understands that actually you DO know better than them and will let you get one with it. Very, very rare.

Graphic Design is commercial visual communication, thats it. You do something that works and it can be the greatest piece of design but 99% of the time, it will be forgotten about a month after it hits the printers (apart from by other Designers, natch.) However, so many Graphic Designers talk about their work like it was the most socially important thing to happen to the world since the Berlin Wall came down and this is what gets my back up.

I love Graphic Design, I bloody hate the Graphic Design 'scene'.

Really like your designs - sorry to ask here but I can't work out how to send a PM.

Apologies if someone's done something quite similar to this already. Couldn't be hooped checking through 50 pages worth to see.

Perhaps the Kama Scythe's a bit cliché and crap (it's not even a vector yet), but this is just a short firework.

**edit I see gord made a fan out the 'O'. Nice one. ;)
