**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

If the sum of this transfer did indeed cost us £17-18m, then I just dont understand the reasoning behind it. The addition of another Right-back was much needed in our squad, but to have Arbeloa going aswell is just...

We don't know that he's off yet though in fairness...if we can get 5-6 million for Drossena that will hopefully fund the deal well enough to keep Arbeloa, although how he'll cope with sitting on the bench I'm not sure.

Torres tells Rafa to get Villa

That would suit me more :)

Apparently we're 40/1 to sign Villa...might be worth a small flutter!

I suspect the anti-racism campaign is more in relation to skin colour racism than nationality racism.

Either way, its almost certain to happen. FIFA has found a way to bypass any obstructive EU laws on the issue, the proposal was passed by 155 votes to 5 at the conference, the English FA voted yes at said conference, and on top of all that we want the world cup bid so we arent likely to go telling FIFA where to shove it :)

I suppose they make the rules, they can be as hypocritical and crazy as they like

Arsenal are definitely not getting anyone this summer at this rate, and I won't blame Wenger, the transfer window is surreal, this can't be real :(.

Indeed and its worrying me that Wenger perhaps wants to sign big name players but cant because of the stupidly high prices that the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City now will or might be spending on players in the future...RM spending £80 mill on Ronaldo just takes the living **** really...i would not be surprised if he turns out to be utter rubbish for RM next yr:p...boy RM will be kicking themselves.

£19mill for Johnson is ridiculous:eek:...not saying hes a rubbish player, hes ok when ive seen him but i mean come on...the prices are just getting out of hand now:(.

Well providing we get this Ajax CB and a DM i think we'll be ok providing no one major leaves. There appear to be no rumours for Ade so i would guess our foward line wont be changing.

one of the articles today said that Liverpool are owed £7m I think from the Crouch transfer - so of the remaining £10m to pay or so, Arbeloa sale will cover most of it

Still steep price (and frrankly ripped off no matter how good/moderate his attacking abilities are) - but Liverpool may only end up "paying" £3m or so from current funds (albeit effectively with two players also)

You sound like a Liverpool fan trying to defend the transfer :p

They're as obsessed with transfer fee's as their manager

Oh and lol if they sign Johnson for that amount, good player better than they've already got IMO but near 20 million for a right back and one who is still a little wayward defensively? I guess that's what happens when you buy English players

Hopefully as i heard that Fabregas was saying something about wanting to move to Barca...i dont blame him seeing as Pep is winning trophies whereas Wenger isnt.

But i can see Fabregas leaving if we dont start winning trophies...as for Adebayor??..should have got rid of him last yr when AC Milan were after him...think something around £25mill was being offered...in hindsight Wenger should taken the money as this yr hes been decidedly average if anything.

Contracts mean sod all to footballers.

They don't to clubs, though. MON has already proved he's willing to play hard-ball over the transfer demands of players under contracts a lot shorter than Ash's.

But then, Ash hasn't even hinted he wants a transfer, unlike Barry, so there's some way to go before this even has the possibility of becoming a potentially worthwhile piece of speculation.

It depresses me how expensive English players are :(
I am quite happy we look like we are signing Johnson but £18m! :(
Guess its a sellers market when it comes to English players

no - it was aimed at those who think he may be the only costly player to arrive during the summer, so I was pointing out that Liverpool probably dont actually have to lay out too much actual cash

Which will be sometime soon ie in the next yr or 2 unless Arsenal start winning titles and trophies.

Meh, that's fair I suppose, he is a world class player, he wants to be playing with similar players, not Denilson, Diaby and Song. I wouldn't begrudge him a move in 2 years time, but hopefully things will be better then. He's said himself he thinks the club have a very bright future and hopefully he's right, if he's not he'll leave and still have 8 years of top quality football in him, having given Arsenal about 7, which is fair.

Oh and about the Verminator - http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5383545,00.html seems it's done

or you could look at it another way,

were buying proven talent and international quality, a player who wont need time to bed in, he will have a world class manager and coaching staff behind him and will only improve.

maybe if he had a name like glenalves johnsoninho the fair weather fans would be happier ;p

The rule isnt about citizenship, the rule clearly states that for a player to be eligible they must be eligible to play for the national side of the host league. So for instance, Almunia would count as "english" because he is eligible to play for England. Whereas Reina would not count as "english" despite the length of time in the EPL because he is ineligible for the host nation.

Could explain , in part, why teams like Cardiff are currently trying to become officially part of the english FA instead of the welsh FA.

Its perfectly simple for the rule to be legal, no one is saying that the clubs cannot employ who they want from where ever they want, its just that if they want to enter their club into a Uefa or FIFA sanctioned competition, they must field x amount of home players in a match as thats the rules of the game.
They could employ an infinite amount of foreign players and pay them a billion pounds a week they would still be employed, but only 4 of them are going to get to play a game at anyone time.

Its one of the complications that running a business that makes its money from playing games brings.

Not sure if your calling me a fairweather fan or not but will give you the benefit of the doubt.
Dont get me wrong, I am happy we have signed him and I am sure he will only get better but in my opinion he is costing us twice what we would pay if he was not English :/
