**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

or you could look at it another way,

were buying proven talent and international quality, a player who wont need time to bed in, he will have a world class manager and coaching staff behind him and will only improve.

maybe if he had a name like glenalves johnsoninho the fair weather fans would be happier ;p

Or that a far, far better defender (Sagna) cost £7.5m 2 years ago. Hm ..

but only 4 of them are going to get to play a game at anyone time.

Start a game. Only the specified number can start the game. Once the match has begun you can field as many "foreign" players as you want, under the ruling the limitation only applies to the number of initial players at the starting whistle.

Easy to pick holes in transfers like that. That's like saying, no one should pay more than £12m for a winger because that's what United signed Ronaldo for.

Wonder if Pennant will make up any of the Johnson deal?

Yeah but I think that was a fair price for Sagna, maybe a bit of a bargain but £7.5m is still a lot :/

Whatever the technicalities of the actual playing rule, EU law wont apply, because it isnt going to stop Clubs giving jobs to anybody.no matter where they are from.

It's not as black and white as that. Things in employment law such as constructive dismissal show that grey areas do exist.

Not in the case of football, or you would have players walking out of clubs claiming constructive dismissal because they have spent extended periods of time on the bench while statistically inferior players have played ahead of the them, therefore they have been deliberately overlooked and made to feel degraded.
Its subjective, and unenforceable, and the EU wont be able to stop it.

The EU law that they were worried about dealing with, was article 48 of EU treaty, which in terms of football had the following effect.

"Article 48 of the EEC Treaty precludes the application of rules laid down by sporting associations under which, in matches in competitions which they organize, football clubs may field only a limited number of professional players who are nationals of other Member States.

As it is though its irrelevant now as FIFA is no longer worried about that as there is another way round that particular law.

Not sure if your calling me a fairweather fan or not but will give you the benefit of the doubt.
Dont get me wrong, I am happy we have signed him and I am sure he will only get better but in my opinion he is costing us twice what we would pay if he was not English :/

no not calling you one, but there are some about :)

Nice he turned down Chavski and City no matter how much money they threw at him...

There's a few reasons why I agree with that:

a) You bought Glen Johnson for c£17m
b) We didn't
c) That means Bosingwa is likely to stay
d) You bought Glen Johnson for c£17m

Now that's assuming that we were actually interested in him in the first place of course, don't forget that Chelsea are linked by the media, agents and selling clubs to every player going just to either make a story interesting or to bump the price up.
We apparently lost out on Kaka after a £70m bid and the media still print that crap now even though Chelsea categorically denied any daft offer for him:
"We have never made an offer to AC Milan for Kaka and therefore not one at this extraordinary level," read a statement on the Chelsea website. "As a consequence we have not discussed a salary with the player either. "Any reports to the contrary are totally untrue."
Don't believe the hype.

Storrie also said that they'd received an offer between £15m-£18m from a club who are playing CL football next year, one club made that offer.
Nice to see he chose Liverpool over Citeh, unlucky:p

Judging by most of your posts, none of the Utd team is.

Thats not correct.

There are a lot of players who are not good enough (anymore) at united.

O'shea, Park, Giggs, Scholes, Berbatov, in a lot of peoples eyes Tevez, Nani, Anderson.

I am happy enough with Anderson and Nani if they got played in their right positions, but the rest could get run over by a bus and I would'nt miss them

Rooney, Ferdinand, Vidic, Carrick and Evra are better than anyone else in their positions in the league.

I'd agree with the post above with the exception of Carrick, although I rate him. Still think he can improve and certainly isn't the best CM in the league.

Music to every Arsenal fans ears - "Eboue admits he may leave Arsenal"?
