**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Everyone is signing for Utd - even those that just signed an extended contract (Torres)

(if you believe the papers)

Fergie must have £300m to spend this summer according to all the speculation

Why? He's only had 1 really good full season, world class indicates consistency in high class performance over a number of years. He obviously has all the potential in the world to be up there, just hasn't consistently proven it in the big games over the last few years. I'm an Arsenal fan and Cesc is a hero, just have to be realistic is all. I know he will be, very soon, but is he right now? I'm not 100%

Saying Fab isnt world class is like saying Shearer was crap at scoring goals or Alex Ferguson has been unsuccesful at ManU

I think the term world class gets banded around far too easily these days. If we believe that every single player who is supposedley world class, is actually world class then what formation would we see to have a world class team ?

5 in net 30 at the back 50 in midfeild and 20 up front ?? :p

Undoubtedley Fabregas is a very good player, technically sound, good running with the ball and good vision. Having seen some games Arsenal have lost last season, he has gone missing far too many times and for that I put a question mark on his 'world class' status

He'll be the best midfielder in the world one day, considering he's only 22 and he's this damn good already it's frightening to think how good he will be at 28 when he's learnt how to strengthen the weaknesses in his game and is in the peak of his ability. Lucky lucky Barcelona :(.

Anyone else reckon Man United will go back to a more traditional 4-4-2 now? The 4-3-3 really only existed to give Ronaldo a free(ish) role to move from midfield into attack. With Rooney apparently demanding a properly up front position again, I can't see who out of the current squad they'd play on either forward wing. Rooney + Berbatov up front (someone else said Berbs should be the goal sitter, but I reckon the other way round would work better), Carrick/Fletcher/Hargreaves(lol) and someone in the middle behind, Nani/that young Serb kid/Valencia on the wings. Bosh.

Yep thats the way I see it and I see them being a better team for it over the season. They just need a bit more bite to midfield. The only trouble I see is Rooney and berba doesn't work well. Its finding the right forward to play off Rooney or Berbatov that's going to take some money and thinking for Sir Alex.

I'm thinking yakubu 79.9 million ;)

He has only had one good season since he has played for Arsenal? And he hasnt proven himself to be world class in your eyes? And what sort of player would you class as world class then?

How many teams would Fab not walk into as a starting 11?

Carricks also very good, but horrible defensively, partially down to complete lack of pace, his game isn't running or chasing, but picking out the right pass with the ball, he's not got Fabregas's ability to turn away from trouble that offsets Fab's possible lack of size and lack of real pace. But Carrick is very very good at picking out defence splitting passes. However, he has to be the most fowards of the two midfielders and with Anderson he's not, when he was played with Scholes almost all year long Scholes took up the more withdrawn position and Carrick stepped forward. Even in the CL final this was apparent, to the very second Scholes came on Carrick was suddenly staying put 10-20 yards inside the Barca half when they had the ball, while with ANderson on he was at the halfway line or deeper most of the time.

I have no idea how people are saying, "you can't compare him to xxx, they play in completely different positions", wtf, firstly they don't, he's an attacking central mid whose been forced back at points this year and since Utd don't have a real DM. He's always been a AMC and will always be a AMC, there are dozens, if not hundreds of top quality players that play his position, largely because midfield has more top players than any other position in the world. He's very good, not being as good as Fabregas, Iniesta or Gerrard doesn't make him crap, just literally not as good.

Utd HAVE to have a quality DM to play alongside him though as he's frankly, crap at the defensive role.

I disagree, firstly you say he is horrible defensively; he may not make numerous back tracking tackles but that is largely to do with his reading of the game and him intercepting attacks before the ball gets past him. This was highlighted in his last season in a Spurs shirt where they only lost 9 league games and conceded a mere 38 goals (For Spurs that's bloody good! :p), where he played the deep lying play maker role superbly; both breaking up attacks and launching counters.

Carrick is not an out and out AMC; i anything he is a central midfielder that can play both the defensive and offensive roles very well.

The term world class is meaningless as you are just arguing semantics, but he is a very good player and would be an asset in any squad.

Eboue is available for 90million

Edit: Sorry I meant £90 ;)

I didn't say 'good' season, I said 'really good' season, anybody can have a good season. 07/08 Fabregas really ran things and was the best CM in the prem, this season just past he didn't really get into it at all and then he got injured long term. He wasn't consistently great in 06/07 or before that, just very promising and obviously a potential star. If he'd have carried his form from 07/08 to last season and had a good campaign then yeah, he'd be up there at the top of the pile with Xavi and Iniesta, he just didn't ..

I admire Cesc and his way of play, I just don't think he's fully pushed through yet, I still think that this coming season or the next one we'll see him dominate the prem. Can't understand why you don't see where I'm coming from, especially after a string of ordinary performances this year. I'm not denying he's one of the best as he obviously is, but he's young and a little inconsistent at the moment and when he straightens that out he'll go straight to the top, right now he's just lingering around below the very top players imo, obviously playing for a struggling team has contributed to this.

Edit - I think this all comes down to the term 'world class' and how we all define the term, let's just say that I think Cesc is by far the best young CM in the world and gauge it on his progress next to his peers, not a stupid made up term.

Gerrard is world class, Fabregas is not and that's coming from a UTD supporter

Fabregas at the moment is not as good as Xavi or Iniesta either just for the record ;)

It depends what your definition of world class is, I consider the top 5 players or so in their position as world class. Fabregas could be definitely but I think he needs a few more years under his belt, especially considering his fairly poor season last year.

But Villa would only leave La Liga for England's top flight if it was to join Liverpool and their Spanish boss Rafael Benitez.

Hehehaha huhuhu ;)

Wonder what the odds are of this coming off? Would a sneaky £30-35m do the job?

I am going to say no chance. I dont think we have the funds for one, but more importantly Villa has been absolutely adamant for a number of years now that he really REALLY doesnt want to leave Spain (which doesnt surprise me considering the area he comes from).

I would still be very surprised if he moved anywhere exterior to Spain. Very surprised.

I hope this Melo rumour is true. He seems to tick all the right boxes for a strong defensive midfielder, already plays for a good club, isn't stupidly young, and looks like he might be about to become Brazil's regular DM. Yes please.

I think we will see a variation of 4-4-2, 4-3-3 & 4-5-1 throughout a game but not the traditional English 4-4-2 system.
But how will you fit your players into that system, especially the 4-3-3? You need three decent goal scorers for the front three there, and since Tevez looks like he'll be off, Ronaldo already is, Rooney wants to play up front, and Berbatov is hardly a mobile roaming forward winger, you're not exactly blessed with the options for it any more.

4-4-2 is a very limited system of play and is extremely predicatable.
But it fits the players you have so much more.
