**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I just don't think Arsenal can be ruled out for 'x' number of years when an 'inexperienced' Arsenal team (2008) finished the same number of points behind Man Utd as Liverpool did last season. Sure they need a few additional players but you can't rule them out. I certainly don't see Liverpool achieving that points total again next season which in itself wouldn't have been enough to win the league in the last 6 years.

So if you think Liverpool cant do it again - what makes you think Arsenal can?

I think Arsenal will easily make the top four again, personally just think without major losses to all three teams above them, they cant compete over 38 games ( yes Utd have had a major loss in one sense, but the team as a whole should be stronger as long as SAF doesnt find another Veron / Djemba Djemba/ Kleberson, and imo Valencia will make a good addition even though not a direct replacement from goals point of view)

I'd actually say they're pretty close in quality. Casillas is probably one of the best reaction shot stoppers around, but his distribution and decision making are probably weaker than Reina's. They're both fantastic keepers and I think it'd be tough to pick one over the other.

Valdes is not quite as bad as he's made out to be, but he's definitely on a lower level than either Reina or Casillas. €150k a week is insane money. He should be grateful that they haven't already replaced him with someone like Asenjo!

Sorry I disagree, Casillas is the better keeper. If he wasn't better then Reina then Renia would be the number one, if they were "equally" as good, you'd maybe rotate them both.

Asenjo :D he's at Sheffield Wednesday ;) Football manager !

That doesn't make sense. At no time has David James been better than Robert Green, yet he still got playing numerous amounts of times as the favoured choice. I'm not saying James didn't have spells where he was impressive for Portsmouth, but as an all round package he's a timebomb waiting to happen.

Casillas is a great shot stopper, but like most keepers including Reina, Cech, Van Der Sar and Valdes, he's prone to the odd flap. It's what keepers do.

In regards to Casillas, you only have to look back as far as the Osasuna game, where he made a meal of a tame shot. Valdes nearly gifted United a goal in the opening minutes of the Champions League Final.

On the subject of keepers, I have to say I don't rate Cech as much as I used to. Since his unfortunate head injury he hasn't been anywhere near as impressive in my opinion and he's been riding on the reputation he set himself in the first few years of being in the league.

David James is the best English keeper, that why he was number one. England, do really go to town with any player who happens to have a bad game or make a mistake, and the media play a big role in picking the team, or they used to under certain managers.

I think David James is better then Robert Green. Robert Green is a good keeper still.

I agree, Cech was looking very good, then he had his head injury and looks a shadow of his former self. ( don't let Gustov see this ) I don't rate him as much anymore.

I don't think Van Der Sar is a good keeper, he is well past it and only looks good because of his defense. Reina is one of the better keepers in the League.

You can't single out one performance or one save to slate goal keepers on, they quite often make hundreds of saves through a season, and its the level they play at week in week out that should get them in to the national side. I,e James has played well for Pompy over long periods of the season. Almunia had one very good game against Manchester United, and was being considered for a national team place not even in his own national side.

Don't use injuries as an excuse for your players :)

Gerrard was out for a lengthy time, who is also in that list.

All teams are affected by injuries.

Don't see where he was using it as an excuse, it was more of a "Look at what they can do when out for a period, imagine what they can do fully fit for a season" comment...:p:cool::rolleyes:

Anyone know what this Lee Williamson is like? Played for Rotherham, Watford and last season on loan at Preston. Apparently SUFC have signed him for an undisclosed fee.

:p:D:rolleyes:

Look how amazing they are they're near the top of the assists, imagine if they were fit they'd easily be the best players :p

sounded like that to be :p

All teams are hit with injuries, judge players over 2-3 seasons :) not just one, injury hit season.

Tummy in "missing the point again" shocker.

He wasn't saying that at all. He was merely backing up my point that RvP is an important player for us by pointing out that he wasn't Arsenal's second-highest assister, he was the highest in the entire Premiership. Despite not playing a fair portion of games.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claims it is only "a question of time" before the club sign Valencia striker David Villa.

The free-spending Spanish giants have already added £56million Brazilian superstar Kaka to their squad and have a £80million agreement with Manchester United for the services of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Valencia president Manuel Llorente this week insisted no bids had been accepted for Villa, who is currently on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup.

However, re-elected Madrid president Perez insists his club's spending will continue and expects to bring Villa to the Santiago Bernabeu at some point this summer.

"Manuel Llorente knows what he wants to do. Us as well. For that the operation is a question of time," Perez was quoted in Canal Nou.

"Everything must be done in a friendly and co-operative way and we have very good relations with Valencia. Things need to be done calmly, be explained well and so that everybody is happy.

"We have the whole of the summer ahead of us."
Project

Villa, 27, became Spain's second all-time top scorer this week behind current Madrid striker Raul but Perez doesn't expect the striker to be as costly as his other acquisitions.

"Players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, who are Ballon d'Or or FIFA World Player of the Year winners, are players that are called investment players," he said.

"Real Madrid cannot pay these quantities of money for every player. This is not to put down Villa.

"Players who have won these awards have an international impact. I think Villa is an excellent player, but he is a footballer who we have to accommodate into our project."

Surely not the way to convince an in demand player to come play for you, putting him down as not as good or as important as your two previous signings
