Cinema annoyances...

Its not where you are "meant to be silent" - it is a large public place where people are allowed to eat and drink. There will be inherent noise. Deal with it.

I was going to acquiesce for the sake of fairness until you said "deal with it". No intelligent, mature person ever rounded off an argument by concluding "deal with it".

A little bit of paper rustling REALLY doesn't matter.

To you, maybe. Not to the rest of us who have to "deal with it". Or haven't you read every other comment in this thread.

As long as food is allowed there will be a very minor amount of noise. If food stops being allowed, a huge number of people will stop going to the cinema, me included.

So you go to the cinema for the food? Obviously you do since, as you stated, you wouldn't go if they removed it. You seem to be exactly the same kind of person that most people in this thread dislike. Doesn't that tell you that the problem lies with you, not with everyone else?

EDIT: I think it is quite indicative of the lack of social skills some people have that they'd rather sit there and suffer in silence rather than ask someone else to stop talking / stop kicking their chair / stop rustling at an excessive volume!

I think it is quite indicative of your issues with other cinema-goers that my post ending up irritating you when it wasn't even meant to.

YOU (in this case) are the one who has a problem with someone else at the cinema. It is up to you to either learn to live with the issue, or find some way of resolving it (ask them to stop, speak to the manager, move seats, go at an alternative time, write to your MP etc). That was what my "deal with it" comment referred to. Deal with the issue in hand.

If someone is rustling VERY loud I can see your point. It isn't something which I notice (and I'm very sensitive to noise at home/work). Maybe if people stopped focusing on the noise then there wouldn't be an issue. Noise is one of those things that is becomes very easy to focus on and create an issue with; for example, someone who "hates rustling" goes to the cinema - there is a faint rustle, they then focus on this and it becomes a much bigger problem, with the result that they sit there almost waiting for the next rustle.

No, I certainly don't go for the food. My wife & I normally take in a bag of sweets (or two). As I stated - my diet is very restrictive (for sporting reasons) so it is the one night of the week I allow myself a treat. Had I to sit there and eat nothing I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much and would most likely wait for the DVD release.

And I don't think I make a noise at all - obviously you cannot be silent, but I (like the majority of people in the cinema who DO eat stuff) cannot do it silently), so there is a small amount of noise. If other people get aggrieved about that, then as far as I'm concerned it is their problem and not mine. I cannot eat in complete silence, no matter how hard I try.

It didn't irritate me at all - not sure why you've come to that conclusion?

I'm always sorely tempted to get in early, buy a large drink and tip it over the seats in front, behind and to the sides of me.

Not had the guts to actually do it yet though.

Who in the thread has said that they charge in the first time someone knocks their chair? I think you are confused pal.

Pretty much you, since you seem to enjoy giving the strong impression that you're the Chuck Norris of the cinema police.

From the previous responses such as "I leave it 10 minutes before I ask someone to stop kicking my chair" it is quite apparent a lot of people don't try and deal with the things that annoy them at the cinema.

I shudder to think what other conclusions you jump to in life if you've deduced this from that.

Well you've managed to deduce that

a) I'm Chuck Norris
b) Everyone who gets annoyed at the cinema politely asks the offenders to stop it

So, in terms of fairness, I'd say we've both jumped to rather polar conclusions.

I'm a very tolerant person - the few times I've had to speak up at the cinema have been justified (people shouting / using phones / kicking a seat). If someone rustles papers it doesn't bother me; after all, I'm not the one posting my "annoyances" in the thread - rather, I'm trying to point out that instead of being annoyed, there are solutions.

Personally I think some of this stuff goes with the territory....

-People eating / rustling packets
-Adverts / Trailers
-Potential exposure to chavs

One thing I've not seen mentioned is people throwing sweets from the back rows, that can be annoying as unlike people kicking the back of your chair, it can be difficult to identify/approach them.

Regarding eating sweets etc, what I tend to do is waiting until a noisy part of the film (car chase, gunfight, shouting match etc) before rustling about.

Prohibit food and both of these problems would be eliminated. I think drinks should be allowed, especially during the warmer months, but I can see no justification for insisting on the right to munch.

Of course the cinemas will never prohibit food, as they'd lose out on their secondary sales, plus infuriate a pack of fat people such that ticket sales would go down too.

As much as I agree with what you say, only a small percentage of cinema profits come from ticket sales, the majority of profits comes from snacks and beverages, if these were to be banned, ticket prices would likely more than double. I have this on very good authority from many friends working within various cinemas.

Yeah its a bit annoying when people come in with majorly spicey smelling dip and crisps - mostly seems to happen when I'm in london, but the classic annoyance is a massive head blocking your view. Hasn't really happened to me for quite a long time, these days its people talking through the movie and getting up and going to the toilet all the time seems to be the trend.

Precisely. I've looked into how much it would cost to start an independent cinema and where the costs come from/go. The bottom line is that food and drink sales pretty much keep cinemas alive.

Teenagers are the worst thing about it, the scally ones. Went to watch The Hangover and we had to sit in designated seats. We were there early-ish compared to everyone else, yet these idiots had just decided to take the entire back row - including our seats. So obviously we just sat somewhere else, as did several other people. Obvious then people come in and we are sat in their seats. So they ask people to move, who explain that they have had to move too, meaning no one ends up sitting in their set seats.

Also, with several jokes in the film - a few of these hilarious little ****s decide to shout out during the film, trying to do impressions of the characters. no one in there finds it funny apart from them, yet it doesn't stop them. They simply have no respect for anyone.

Other times I've been to the cinema and they just talk all the way through it. One was sat next to me and kept leaning forward and speaking down the row to his friend asking who such and such was, and what else they had been in. I'm a very calm person but I had to tell him to STFU. Don't think a kid has ever wound me up that much in my life :p

Rustling of food doesnt bother me at the cinema, i can generally concentrate on whats being said without the need for absolute silence. However chavs are the most annoying of all. There was one time a few years ago where a group of chavs had taken over the back row and were throwing sweets/popcorn at everyone in the cinema. Loads of people complained but the staff were too scared to do anything. Cinemas need bouncers imo :)

Well I am generally tolerant of people in the cinema.
Here in Prague there aren't even any adverts or notices for people to turn mobile phones off and so quite often people will be using their phone.
One of the cinemas still uses like a dot matrix printer (with the paper with little holes at either side) and inside the screening room it was like 10 degrees!!!

In Thailand the cinema was awesome. You basically got a sofa and a blanket and free food and drink!

I used to go to the cinema with my ex when we first started going out, we would go watch a film at around 1 o'clock because it was dead! I remember when I Now Pronounced You Chuck and Larry had just been released and there was only around 6 of us. We paid £6.50 to get in and we where allowed to sit anywhere in the cinema! Just sat in the premier seats :D

Did this through most new releases!

However the first time in a long time we actually went to watch a film at a regular time, some **** next to us constantly shook his leg so it shock the whole row of seats! I build so much rage up that as soon as I was about to have ago...

someone else did it for me :P

And in a rather empty cinema excluding a couple infront of us, a man in a rain coat came walking down our empty isle, with his coat rustling away and sat next to me!
He knew the couple infront and started talking to them, got up, rusteled away and sat next to them.

Hear the guy infront say "Why is he here? I didn't invite him!"

I love going to the cinema, but now try to pick early or late shows, so that there is the minimum of other people in there with me.

Pet hates:-

5. People with bladders the size of walnuts - just stay at home please.

A few years ago I would just let it go and sit there, now I will speak / shout at people, even to the point of getting the staff to throw people out!

your seat must have been stinking!

Hmm, i was wondering - my local Odeon is now open and has showings going up to 10, 11 and 12pm - the few times i've been at those times, there have been about four people in the cinema, more staff than customers even.

How is that even financially viable for them?

really noisy people really annoy me, general whispering etc fair doos, but talking at normal volume or even louder is just down right not on.

Me and my Mrs saw terminator salvation 2 weeks ago, and some guy was on his phone for the entire adverts, no problem i thought, but then the film was on and he was doing the same. when i say on his phone i mean just looking not talking, however in a really dark room, its quite off putting seeing a screen of a mobile in the corner of your eye.

after about 10 minutes i just quite loudly said to my girlfriend "IF he doesn't put that phone away am gonna punch him in the ******* face" followed by a stare at him, he put the phone away instantly.

It was just really annoying. why pay 7 quid to see a film if your gonna look at your phone, at first i thought he was recording the film.

Am more then happy to tell anyone of any age to STFU, if there making excessive noise, your paying like 15 quid for 2 film tickets, you dont want to put up with pricks ruining the film, so i think u've got every right to kick off and cause a scene.

edit - i just remembered i am being made to see harry ******, which will no doubt be full of kids screaming etc, might take a sleeping tablet before hand so i don't smack someone in the face due to being annoyed way to much. I'm dreadin it!!!
