**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Totally agree. Scholes and Giggs are still excellent players but they are not capable of playing too many games any more, and if we get an injury or two in the central midfield area (which is bound to happen at some point during the season) we could be a bit short of cover.

I actually don't mind Fletcher that much anymore. Up until the 2007-2008 season I couldn't understand what Fergie saw in him, but both he and O'Shea have improved. As you say though, I wouldn't really class them as starting 11 material, simply reasonable cover in case somebody gets injured.

What about the left wing? Giggs can't play too many games, and Nani was terrible last season. Should he be given a starting role and a chance to prove himself or should Utd be looking for a new left winger too?

Well other than the obvious, I am not sure there's many great wingers around right now.
So I would expect us to settle on having Park, Tosic, Nani and Valencia.
They are pretty versatile, can play on both wings I believe and we also could use Rooney/Hargreves in wide roles like we have before.
It's clearly not ideal but given how much money has already been spent on this area and how young Tosic, Valencia and Nani all are, I suppose SAF will look to bring them on, rather than spending money on another young, unproven player.

It's striker and midfielder for me.
The squad's carrying some dead weight in the middle of the park imo.
Scholes/Giggs are only clouding peoples judgement of how strong we are here, as they both are at best inconsistent and always on reduced games etc.
Likelwise, some fans have been so suprised that Fletcher has started to string two passes together that they have convinced themselves hes become michael essien.
He still isn't strong enough for the first 11 from an ideal squad.
So that leaves Carrick, Hargeves and Anderson.
Should Hargreves stay injury free and Anderson play like he's shown he can, its not a bad situation.
But with money in the bank, those seem big if's.
So I would like to see someone come in that can fill this area.
Up front, a selfish, dedicated goal scorer that wont try and do anything fancy could make a big difference and take a lot of pressure off Rooney.

Why do we need to take pressure off Rooney though. He has shown that when is played up front for England and United, he is far more effective than when he is played wide left. If Berbatov finds some form then he could be the ideal foil for Rooney so we don't need to up the ante to get an out and out striker.

Its all ifs and buts though at this stage but let's be fair we should not be the only team with the spotlight on us for if's and buts. What if Torres burns himself out this year given he has just had two big summers and is entering a world cup year. What if Ancelotti is another yes man and persists in playing Ballack etc

I actually thought he was good when on loan at Barnsley, wish we would have signed him at the time. Probably not Chelsea standard though, but how many games will he actually play?

I agree, I am hoping Rooney plays up front.
But he is prone to have spells when he doesn't score and you can see him getting more and more mad in these matches.
So if no one else is helping with the goals, I don't think that is ideal.
He also stands out like a sore thumb right now for opposition defences, so a traditional striker to keep defenders busy and allow Rooney to drop a bit deeper could be important.
He also seems to pick up injury's a lot and Berba coming good is anything but a foregone conclusion

Why are people counting Hargreaves as an available player?

He is currently unable to train, and has been crippled for the past two seasons. Pre season starts in 4 days, and he cant even attend the training ground.

Is there any idea of when Hargreaves will be fit? The last report I heard was that he wouldn't make the start of the season, but there was no estimate of when he would be fit.

The latest article in the Telegraph dated today says they have "No Idea" when he will be fit.

£17 million is a lot of money.
The transfer market is over priced and has been for a few years. Personally, I think for the best part of 20 million pounds, you should get a world class player.

Mash, probably isn't the best in that position but he will be there or there about in a few years.

£17 million to spend on another average full back ? ;)

So you reckon Mascherano is worth £17m and Glen Johnson is an average full back? Right.

I agree on both points.

Johnson is good when it comes to attacking, but at times, his defensive work can be lacking. Very like our own Gareth Bale.

As for Mascherano, he has proved to be a big player in Liverpool's season and I reckon he's worth around about the £15m mark.

Masch is worth a lot more than £15m. Unless Barca manage to raise a fair bit from sales then im not worried whatsoever because as it stands they can't afford to make us a bid that we won't just laugh at.
