**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Hargreaves isn't unproven.
Pirlo, plays DM a bit differently to Mash.
Gattuso, is old, but still one of the best defensive mids in the world, not a box to box. Same goes for Essien except he's younger.
De Rossi is a good player.
Zambrotta, is a more then capable DM and has played their a lot, I've seen him play there, he's a good DM.

A bit?

Zambrotta and De rossi are now only good players? im talking about world class players.

And as for Hargreaves, im sorry but playing 3/4 games in a row does not deserve status of world class. I agree he has great ability but until he plays 30/40 games then its no no!

Yeh, if hes so good why's he not playing for AC. Dont understand how people can compare him with Masch

Every time I've seen Milan this season (or checked the line-ups after a result) he's been on the bench or at RB.

I know we're all a little guilty of the FM syndrome here when talking about player's abilities (me included), but some people take it as 100% gospel it seems :p

Just for some sort of comparison, how much would people here say Modric is worth?

One of our best players last season along with Assou-Ekotto and Lennon.

I liked him a lot when I saw him play.
Looks a very tidy nippy attacking mid, reminded me a lot of the Arsenal Midfield to be honest.

How much did you get him for ?

what about senna?

all masherano does is brake up attacks and plays it simple, senna does everything without senna spain wouldnt be as good as they are without him.

Ermmmm you do realise that Yaya has signed a contract extension with Barca dont you??...think it was a 3 yr extension...would have brilliant to see him with Kolo at Arsenal next season though.

Yes i know that. They would rotate all 4 of them but if Masch went he would be first choice.

Mascherano does a lot of running around and throwing himself about, he isnt the most cultured player in the world.

Essien does everything Mascherano does while seemingly expending 50% less effort.

A bit? Are you having a laugh?

Is he avin a laugh! :D

I think some people have been playing too much FM and not enough watching. Pirlo is a DM in FM.....zomg he's just like Mascharano then!

Sry but i really dont see eye to eye with you Tummy!

Probably what you paid really, £14-16m. If he was going to a top 4 club, £18-20m. Isnt he supposed to be an attacking midfielder though?

145 apps for Bayern Munich don't count towards Hargreaves then ?

World Class Defensive midfielders ?

Essien, Hargreaves (when fit), Gattuso, Rossi, Yaya, Senna, Mash.

almost in that order, ignoring Hargreaves cause he's a cripple.

Is Xavi from Barca a defensive mid ? or a mid ?
Never though of him as an attacking mid, thats the other one.

£16.5 is a lot of money.
Probably be happy to pay about that or up to about 20 million for him.

Same as Bent. £16.5m

Funny that, I was thinking around £14m

Under Juande he was woeful for you, but then so was your entire side.

Since Harry has been at the club, he's looked much more like the player everyone was ranting and raving over during Euro 2008.

145 apps in the German league and he probably played 60 of them at RB.

Yaya in front of Masch - if thats the case then Pep doesnt have a clue what he's doing. Getting Messi to publicly unsettle Masch so he can be backup to Toure - do me a favour.

Edit, i wish you would stop think Rossi is a DM, he's not! He plays his best football in the final 3rd.
Edit, being a bit harsh on the De Rossi one. He plays in a CM position but i personally think Roma dont play him the correct way.

I've mentioned this before and it's been brought up a minute ago but since when has Essien been a defensive midfielder in the mould of a Makelele, Mascherano or Senna etc?

At Lyon he was very much an attack minded box to box player and since joining Chelsea i can't recall him playing more than a handful of games as a defensive midfielder. Initially it was Makelele with Essien and Lampard pushed on and then the season before last Mikel took over the Makelele role (Essien often played rb that season too), and then last season he was injured for most of it but other than the 2 games in the CL vs us he played further forward with Ballack playing the deaper role.

BTW, Essien's a fantastic player but i don't see him as a defensive midfielder.

Couldnt agree with you more, theres no doubt he can play DM but he's better at cleaning up and arriving late in the box. E.g - The Barca goal! Ergo.. box to box mid!

You see I see that the other way round :D

I see Essien as much more "comfortable" when he's playing a little deeper, and I've always felt he looked a little unnatural or awkward playing in the final third. Mikel, sorry but is a very very average player in my eyes.

I agree he's not in the Claude role, but I think he's defiantly a better defensive mid then he is attacking.
