**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Well in a case like this, he is trying to "do a wenger".
But forgetting even Wenger hasnt "done a wenger" and found a superstar player from nowhere in nearly 5 years.

So if the guy who has made his name at doing it struggles to do it, how does Fergie with his 0% success rate so far think he can do better.
I dont know either, all players have to start out young, but I actually agree with DM on this point, all the great players were obviously fantastic when they where young, average young players very very rarely go on to be anything other than that.

JFW!

And even then Henry and Pires aside who else has he really unearthed to give him this aura of being able to pull off masterstroke signings

And no one throw Fabregas at me because at the same summer we signed Pique so Barca's youth setup was hardly an untapped source

Clichy was playing in the French 2nd league or something and now he's one of the best LB's in the world. Sagna wasn't exactly known. Vieira was playing for Inter's reserves. Eduardo (if he fills everybodies expectations) was barely heard of. RvP was pretty much doomed before Wenger signed him (for like 2.5m, now he's worth over 25m). Ugh I could go on but I can't be bothered. Wenger is extremely good at spotting talent, it's mad to say otherwise.

I just checked, Clichy's team had just been relegated to the French 3rd division.

Has been at the club for 8 years;)

I'll give you Vieira and at a push Clichy (but it's not like the latter went straight into your starting 11 did he, he worked his way up and if Ashley Cole was still with you guys would still be warming the bench)

As for the others no not giving them to you, Sagna may not have been well know but he cost you what £6m and it's hardly like now you've signed him he's the best right back in the world is he. Eduardo was a full international and as for Van Persie everyone knew who he was the only thing Wenger did well was somehow getting him as cheaply as he did

Lyon just spent €24m (leading to 28m) on Lisandro Lopez. Is that a french transfer record?

If he's the Argentina player, he's a good player :)
Remember him scoring something like 27 in 24 games in 07/08 :)
Did well last year as well for Porto :p

Exactly, if Bayern want £70m for Ribery then Arsenal should be asking a similar fee for Arshavin

HAHA :D Ribery for £70m

Ribery isn't worth anything near that much money, Bayern are trying to make some money at Real Madrids expense. Arshavin is good, but he's not that good, not 70 m good.

He would'nt have sold Cole if Clichy was'nt there. That was the reason he sold Cole, coz Clichy was good enough to fill his shoes. Estute business if you ask me!

I was talking about Rooney but having re-read what you said what do you mean?

I was talking about how transfers are all risk, to splash out £30m on Rooney was a huge risk, it worked tho. You win some, you lose some!

Sagna is pretty much the best right back in the world, I can only think of Maicon who is better or as good, in his first year he was voted the best RB in the country, that's a master stroke by Wenger. RvP was a rebellious teenager who had been condemned to the reserves for bad behaviour and Wenger saved his career. I like how you skimmed over Vieira, one of the very best football transfers in history

I'm not going to carry on, it's obvious you're the type of Man Utd fan who has a random grudge against Wenger/Arsenal, Arsene is the master of finding cheap players who turn out to be world class, for me to be having an argument about it is pointless.

I think Cashley would have forced the transfer regardless of Arsenal having a replacement already in the squad. The move as it was was 12 months overdue by which point Cole had cut all ties with the fans

Wenger luckily for him had a ready made replacement in the ranks, same as he does now should Clichy ever want to move on

Haha, Wenger was lucky to have a replacement?! What makes you think he's lucky and not very good :/

No he is not, he's not even in the top 5

Did he ride in on his White Stallion whilst doing so? Seriously give it a rest, Van Persie was always going to amount to great things if Wenger hadn't picked him up Spurs' would have

Random grudge? I think any Man United fan has more than enough reason over the past 15 years or so to despite Arsenal and your manager. I on the other hand have no real grudge anymore as you're not a threat but listening to Arsenal fans bang on about their team having the best player in this position and the best player in that position is truly laughable when you haven't won anything for 5 years
