**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Spurs are a very well run club, backed by a consortium that contains a very rich man; it's not rocket science. :p

In some ways they are a very well run club (financially) but Levy seems to go out of his way and beat Mike Ashley for uselessness.

What do people think of Vieira to Spurs?

It's a risk, much in the same vein as Owen was/is, but if it pays off then Spurs will have made a hell of a signing.

I just wish Keane was around to wind him up. :p

Of course it's true. I think the only player that Citeh have bought who didn't go there for the money is RSC, simply because he's going to have a better chance of European football than before.

In regards to strikers, I'm disapointed Jay Simpson hasn't been given more of a run out for the senior team. Everyone else seems to be given a chance...

Aye probably have a good point there, Vela was given runs here and there but Simpson hasn't really had much. With Eduardo still a little bit raw and Ade now gone, maybe this year he'll be given a shot.

Always seemed a little bit slight to me, but I guess time will tell.

Not really transfer news but scans on Skrtel's hamstring have revealed a small strain that'll only keep him out for up to 3 weeks. Given Agger's back problems we could find ourselves very short at the back if we don't sign another CB soon.

I'm not convinced Simpson is good enough personally, from what I've seen of him in the reserves this year he's definitely not been one of the top performers

Anyway, it seems like it'll be a case of Abu Dhabi Don't as Kolo's brother, Yaya, reckons City aren't big enough for his brother. He says:

Yaya Toure said:
The most important thing for my brother is that he can play with a big team. Arsenal play great football and City are not there yet. And they have Craig Bellamy. Who in their right mind would want to go to a club where that neckless savage plays? Come on.

Good old blogs :p

No more Sammy and injuries does lead to some problems. I can't see who else Rafa is looking at the moment.

Who else will he bring in?

I am under the impression that he is trying harder to keep Alonso and Masc than to sign new players.

The whole Silva thing seems to me like it wont happen. Also what will we do with Riera who had a good season last season?

Personally I wouldn't want us to re-sign Crouch, I like him as a player, but I think it would be somewhat of a step back for us.

Which team did you watch last year?

Sure Adebayor was a sulk for the majority of the season but he was genuine world class when he wanted to be.

Eduardos fitness is still undecided largely, we all know RvP won't play 40 league games in the best of scenarios so at some point are we going to be relying on the likes of Bendtner for goals??? i'd say most likely is the outcome of that question.

Lets see, firstly, RVP played 50 games total last year, 28 league appearances, there will be a lot less games in total for him this year so more league appearances are due. Rooney, played in 30, and Berbatov 31, RVP is playing plenty as it is but has more in him.

We don't need a striker, we have more strikers on our books than Liverpool, Chelsea or Man U have, Vela is a great player who went almost completely unused due to us having too many strikers. Arshavin and Nasri who are both better as withdrawn strikers than out wide, as well as Theo whose a striker and terrible out wide, all add up to even more options up top.

We need a DM and realistically a couple pacey wingers to really compete in any competition this year, buying a striker for a club chock full of strikers is simply a bad idea.

Adebayor was never world class, one fluke finish from 12 yards with another 9 tap in's aswell as dozens of embarassingly poor misses doesn't make a world class player.

Eduardo's the best striker at the club, theres no reason at all to assume he'll be out injured, his injury was a fluke and caused by someone else, not his own body being overworked or incapable of holding up. Vela and Eddie will play way more than last year, and Bendtner, scored as many goals as Adebayor last year with less time on the pitch, so doesn't that add up to a player that will score more than him with the same time on the pitch and even more if not constantly out of position.

While getting those goals Bendtner also did a lot more winning of the ball, tracking back, defending and great hold up play which helps alleviate the pressure, Adebayor offered none of that.

AS for Simpson, tries hard, pacey, but not a fantastic runner with the ball, not great at making runs to show himself and not a great finisher. Considering RVP, Bendtner, Eduardo, Vela, Arshavin, Nasri, Theo are all available and very capable of playing as strikers, theres really no chance he'll get games.

Frankly I am bored and annoyed with the whole dragged out Alonso and Mascherano sagas. I really do feel like our preparations for the coming season are being stonewalled by these 2 on off transfer stories.

The start of the season is edging ever nearer and I really just dont feel like everything is stable at the moment. To be perfectly honest its got to the point now where I would very happily just sell them both and use the £50 million to complete building the team for the new season...as it stands at present, I just feel like we are in limbo.

Yeah, I feel the same Tombstone: we're in a bit of limbo.

But in a way it has deflected a lot of attention from Liverpool and the coming season... Rafa making mind games?

(unlikely lol)

A bigger contract will be enough to keep Mascherano but Alonso wants out imo. Just a matter of whether Real will match our price or not. If we can get close to £35 million that'll be more than we paid for Alonso and Torres so we can replace him with a class player for a decent price. Just a case of who it is.

Who indeed. Alonso is pure class and I really wouldn't know who we could replace him with who would actually be an improvement.

I really do wonder who else we will sign.

I think the past couple of signings have been overpriced.
I remeber when I posted in here saying Keane was a waste of money and overpriced, I got flamed. He was and now we all know. My point is that I think we've not done particularly good business of late.
£18M for Johnson seems overpriced. Sure he's a good player and another England player in our squad, but I am unsure as to whether this price is justified. However, I was not against the signing at all and was not annoyed by it like I was with Keane.

I wonder who we are being linked with apart from Silva, who I really can't see joining us at the moment. I'd like him to come, but I'd rather see Torres and Villa up front together.

There is no direct replacement for Alonso available (of his standard that is) however Alonso isn't indespensible to us. We don't need an Alonso type player which is why Alonso does have a price (unlike Gerrard, Masch, Torres etc) and I am sure that price is based on how much Rafa feels he needs to improve the side.

If it's best for the side to slightly weaken our CM and improve another area of the pitch then I'm all for it. For example; if selling Alonso allows us to sign Silva and replace Alonso with somebody along the lines of Moutinho, Cambiasso or Sneijder then as an 11 we'd be stronger than just having Alonso imo.

The closest one, based on all the media speculation at least, was Lorik Cana, but he went to Sunderland today so that's left us with a few issues if we do lose Xabi :(

To be honest, I disagree with your assessment that we don't need an Alonso type player. For me, Xabi is the player who makes the entire side tick, as well as freeing up Stevie. Without somebody doing his passing work, the whole team seems to fall apart.

I still think that Sneijder could fill that role, but he's about the only person that springs to mind. Possibly Baraja as a very short term solution? Probably last a season at most though.

I'm not sure that Silva would be any better than Riera. He's too lightweight, and tends to play more narrow than Riera does; we would end up with the Liverpool of old, with a whole host of central midfielders, as well as Kuyt and Silva drifting inside as well. If we need to replace Riera, which I'd question anyway, we need to do so with a real winger. I'd rather sign Mata or Cazorla were we to get that kind of player.
